  • Haven’t seen all that many dogs here on RB, so thought I’d try this one. Was actually doing shots of a friend’s Chihuahuas (I know I spelled that wrong), and this black cocker from next door just saundered in, curled up and posed and said “You fool… WHY are you wasting time on those idiots… take me now while I’m in the mood”. So I did. The Chihuahuas hated me and the cocker. The friend loves dogs so she didn’t care.

  • My pound puppy, Glory, was having a blast running through a field of wild grape hyacinth at a friend’s place. She was going so fast it was hard to keep the camera trained on her. But she was so enjoying spring!

  • This (below)was supposed to be a link….I guess it didn’t work…... THANK YOU FOR VIEWING THIS! Special request for Andi /

  • 15×22 watercolor on satin finish Arches watercolor paper. Original unavailable. The American Water Spaniel is a gundog breed of dog little known outside North America. AppearanceWeighing 25 to 45 pounds: females usually 25 to 40; males 30 to 45 lbs (11-20 kg) and standing 15 to 18 inches (36-46 cm) in height. They have a curly to marcell coat that is dense and well-suited to resist cold water and inclement weather. The coat’s color is liver, brown, or chocolate. (A small amount of white on chest or toes is permissible, and spots become smaller in size as pup grows to adulthood.) The American Water Spaniel (AWS) should have a rocker-shaped tail and be somewhat compact in size with well-proportioned features that give the dog an air of balance. Its head should be broad and spaniel-like with no topknot. Eyes are caramel, chocolate, or dark yellow. / History / The American Water Spaniel originated around the mid-1800s but its true origin is a mystery. Most experts have come to accept that it was likely developed in the Fox River and Wolf River valleys of Wisconsin. There is no documentation as to the specific breeds that were used to develop the AWS. Doc Pfeifer of New London, Wisconsin, the man credited with obtaining recognition for the breed in the 1920s, believed that the AWS was developed by crossing extinct English Water Spaniel and the Field Spaniel. Others have disputed this claim and it is currently accepted that the breeds involved in the development of the American Water Spaniel include the English Water Spaniel, Field Spaniel, Curly Coated Retriever, Irish Water Spaniel, Tweed Water Spaniel, and possibly the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. The American Water Spaniel was developed as a hunting dog in the market hunting days of America’s history. Hunters needed a dog that could function on land as well as in the marsh and that could easily fit into a canoe or skiff without taking up much room. The AWS fit the bill and most breed historians note that Midwest market hunters made wide use of this dog. The AWS was not formally recognized as a purebred dog until the United Kennel Club did so in 1920, followed by the Field Dog Stud Book in 1938, and finally by the American Kennel Club in 1940. Having reached its peak of popularity probably sometime in the 1920s and 1930s, the AWS has become the “Forgotten American” at many times in its history. Still, with the tenacity of spirit that exemplifies this little brown dog, the breed’s enthusiasts have managed to maintain a reasonable population that is not likely to disappear from the scene any time soon. The American Water Spaniel was likely one of the primary contributing breeds to the Boykin Spaniel. (information from Wikipedia) Complete 2004

  • OMG the very talented RACHEL LEIGH has nominated JUST BOOTS for the Pay it Forward Group She said ” “I love this photo because I know how difficult it is to get good pet shots and the lighting is just superb in this photo. Boots is as cute as can be and she captured him beautifully!” To me this is the highest compliment, thanking you so very much Rachel :O)) Waiting patiently for his morning walk…... Boots our dearest Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, has the unfortunate name, as being black and tan he has golden lower legs. He was born during the rugby world cup when England actually won something and as his breeder was a rugby fan she called him Golden Boots, after Johny Wilkinson! Started photography May 2008 Sold laminated print RB 23/03/09 BILLYBOY gave the most wonderful compliment when choosing Just Boots. I’m actually kind of glad this is in the Paws & Claws group because now that I’ve been given the opportunity to choose a picture from the group to single out, it’s fitting that my favorite pet picture of all time is right here so I can tell the world just how deeply I love it… / There are so many ways this works for me. The depth of field and selective blur draws attention to the perfect focusing on and around that amazing face, and I like the way the crop being slightly off center works so perfectly with the drape of the ears and the shape of the body. / The lighting is perfect and so natural… no blown out highlights or loss of shadow detail… the quality and direction of the lighting bring out that amazing detail in the facial fur and allows for that subtle reflection on the contrasting smooth surface into which he seems to be slowly melting. Also, the color space of the background matches the subject so perfectly that it’s a pleasing image to the eye even without taking the artistic level of the content into consideration. But I think what REALLY gets to me about this amazing shot is the affect the shooting angle has on drawing me into this pooch’s character. We’re down at his level, as if on equal terms with his world, and I feel as if I’m staring straight into his soul through those deep and all-knowing eyes… the connection between me and Boots is personal through this stunning image. This is a massive work of art and I am honored to be able to exaplin why it’s so special to me. Thanking you so very much Billy, it is such a wonderful compliment. xx Taken with my Sony F717, 800 ISO equiv. Lighting courtesy of my daughter holding a torch as there wasn’t enough natural light! Changed partially to sepia, then bluring and darker tones added for mood…..... • Moving is always bittersweet for me, especially when its a far away move. Packing is not much fun, but the reward for me is always unpacking (there is always good with the bad)!! The hardest part of moving is leaving that which and those whom you love dearly behind… Yesterday I split up the ashes of Stedman our late and beloved Cocker Spaniel with my ex. We made a memorial for him here on the property and leaving both it and my garden beds is a little tough, as we have had so many good memories here. “Steady Freddy,” was his nickname, among many others!! Stedman died from an accidental death a little over two years ago. However, it’s our belief that Stedman left us, so that little Stevey Wonder Dawg could be saved from the streets and come into our lives. The saying, “When one door closes another one opens,” held true in this case. Another saying that comes to mind is that, “You get what you need when you need it, not when you want it.” Yesterday I decided to plant a flower on Stedman’s memorial site, since I have now removed his big heart stone and my small antique St. Francis statue. Sure enough, after one minute of looking, I stumbled across a beautiful variegated plant, which was incredibly named an “Exotic Angel Nectarine!” This little plant is splashed with incredible color, as if a painter dabbed brushes into different colors of bright, vibrant paint and lovingly shook those brushes onto green leaves. The predominent color is red – for the heart of course! My heart will always beat with Stedman deeply in it (along with the rest of my beloved buddies who have passed and now sky dance together). I’m a better person for all of the incredibly wonderful times that we had together!!! LOL – being the character that he was, he’d agree, I’m sure!! :)) This photograph was shot at the dog park in Huntington Beach, California with a Canon XT, 300mm zoom.
