This local ol’ boy is a shepherd who skillfully works and trains dogs. / He was doing a sheep rounding demonstration at a local attraction when I took this shot, as he explained some of the techniques to a fascinated crowd.
Working the sheep at Taralga Rodeo 2009
my friend’s kelpie had been told to leave the sheep alone, and this was his compromise …. we knew how tortured he was, but we got perverse entertainment from watching him struggle with his kelpie nature (and frankly, i find sheep eternally, unfailingly entertaining :>)
When you spend the entire night awake, watching for coyotes that might try to grab one of your sheep buddies, the nightwatchdog amuses himself by harmless games like Wiggle Your Jowls and Toss the Slime. This fellow was demonstrating how he could toss slime 50 feet or more. Really Olympic level stuff! Fortunately, water and gentlerubbing can get your lens clean in no time at all. Nearly good as new! This is a Great Pyrenees dog. He lives with the sheep and really does guard them from coyotes. He is in the Sheep Dog group as differentiated from the Herding Dogs. Sheep dogs grow up with the sheep and live with them with no prey drive. Herding dogs don’t live with the sheep, they work them by trained use of the prey drive.
Leek, November 2008 Part of a university photography project where the brief was to compose two portraits; one that was planned and one that was unplanned. This is my planned response.
This very cute little Australian Shepherd is showing very strong herding and working ability. This is an Original oil painting which was inspired by my remembrances of the many hours of training before you have a good working stock dog and before you try to grab for that gold ring we call a WTCHor Working Trial Champion. / This an Original Oil painted on 11” X 14” stretched canvas by Barbara Anne Applegate. Created in my grants Pass Oregon Studio / FEATURED IN / Down on the Farm 12/11/09 /
