This 9” x 12” portrait of a Bullmastiff dog waiting patiently for his master to return was created in artist colour pencils on Stonehenge paper and took over 55 hours to complete. This piece was awarded First Prize in the Painting & Drawings: Animals class at an Art Show that I entered. This image has been Featured in the Cats and Dogs (1 per day) group.

Although he was dog-tired from the last operation, his combo brain was serving him well and he was soon flying over the icy, oily, factory floor, before anyone could move. Montage / A composite of an oil pastel drawing and images of the landscape worked in Photoshop with blending and adjustments tools to get the tonal renderings and contrasts. Cracked Earth / The land is parched and dry and the dog looks to the sky for life giving rain. At dusk the air is cooler, a welcome relief from the heat of the day. / / Australia is ravaged by drought and the skin of the earth cracks and rips open. The land suffers in an impoverished ecosystem, lost to its natural state of wild bush and wetlands forever. The clearing of land, the cultivation and the chemical overload have wreaked havoc. Still there is no rain.

I wondered thru this Garden. / Upon a chance, next to the entrance, / I found a creature so different, / a creature so small and strange. / I thought it must be, unlike me, insignificant. / Then I saw it rising into the air, / Like my shadow I began to chase. / As it passed through the garden it / touched each face bringing a radiance. / Then I understood I too shared this gift / and we were not so different.

Yesterday and today I work on this painting of a dog (I think it is some kind of Spaniel). I really wanted to exceed myself with this one. Mainly I make paintings with a neutral background, but this time I really wanted a theme. So I turned on some nice classical music which immediatly brought my in the mood for this painting, but than again, music is painting with notes hahaha. The photo really captured that moment when someone calls their dog and they look up at you just a moment before they jump up and run towards you. As I did not like the background in the photo I tried to make my own background out of several other photo’s. It was really hard to blend in the dog with the background with his shadow, but also because the dog is in a somewhat different style than the background. I have the painting as my desktop background and I just cannot stop watching, to me that is a good sign ;-) Best regards, Odwin
