This is one of the many dingoes bred by my late brother on his farm at Chewton, Victoria. Below is a piece I wrote to be read at his funeral. My family is an odd one. My father is older than my grandparents. My brother was older than my mother. I am an only child but I have a brother. It is the stuff of Hollywood and my family story is always very entertaining to others and while it does make for interesting conversation it has its down side. / Bruce was thirty when I was born and by then had already launched himself into what ultimately became his obsession so I guess it seemed unlikely from the outset that we would ever be close. This has always been a source of sadness for me. But I have always been immensely proud of what he worked so hard to achieve and remain proud of the legacy he has left to the scientific community and the country as a whole. Now that I am in my thirties and finally getting my own shit together, so to speak, I was looking forward to forming a closer adult relationship with my brother. I was looking forward to finding out what it was really like to be somebody’s sister. However it was not to be. I tried to come to see him before Christmas last year but he put me off citing this problem and that. I laughed it off at the time, amused at how like his father he was. I thought there would still be time but he chose not to tell us he had a serious heart condition and it will be a while before I can forgive him for gypping me out of a big brother. We didn’t get to share much but I do at least have the memories of childhood visits with the dingoes, a common artistic flair for photography and above all, and the thing for which I am most grateful, a shared love and passion for all animals great and small, by which to remember him. It is now almost 5 years since he died and I still find it difficult to think about the loss. I’m not sure it will ever get easier.
A quick snap when I realised my collie wasn’t about to take kindly to an inquisitive goat

This is Hope my Lurcher, on a snowy febuary day in 2007, she wasn’t that keen on the weather but did oblige me with this quirky shot. I have another Lurcher called Grace as well as Rubicon and Renegade the Ferrets who complete the team, Hope has the nose for finding quarry and Grace has the speed to fill my freezer. Here are the two dogs playing in the snow.
“Crash” the two month old pup, meets his first horse, who still looks huge to him, even though she is only a 25” filly “Pink!” This image was taken last year…..sadly, Pink died in a tragic accident this week (July 09), so it is with great sadness that I now look back on her short, sweet life and share these images with you
blue heeler herding sheep
A farm’s hot summer, an exploring child and his dog in beckoning hidden outerreaches, the bow of an overturned red canoe behind them in the stream. / A father runs from his pickup truck across a field in answer to their dog’s barking, to his son who’s been safely pulled from the water to the stream’s bank. I’m not sure why I painted this, but it has something to do with everything being all right after all. I wanted the trees and sky in on the emergency, a kind of frantic air that’s offset by the calmness of the waiting family dog, who knew what he was doing and how to do it. And a child who will do it all again tomorrow.

Acrylic on canvas See my journal entry for the inspiration for this piece. It is kind of crazy, but interesting if you can dig that kind of thing…. Also available from Zazzle.com as a mug and tote bag.

Pastel on Colourfix sanded paper – 70cm x 50cm This was a commission for the chap depicted in the painting and he wanted his little dogs included as well as his prize rams, with a backdrop of his farm. This was 2006 and he had just cut his hay. (the paddock on the right). I don’t think there would be anything like this amount of growth now! Pastel on Colourfix paper – 50cm x 35cm This is ‘Spur’. He belongs to a friend of mine and is a much loved, elderly working dog. He has lost count of the sheep he has rounded up and now spends his time overseeing farming activities, (and keeping a watchful eye whilst giving a few words of advice to his younger and fitter contemporaries) from the back of the ute!
