This is the city of St. John’s, Newfoundland. The city has a rich history and with a population of approximately 170,000 people. It is a beautiful city with rich colors and turn of the century architecture. This yellow dory was tied to the wharf for the winter. The boat launch had quite a steep angle to it… you can see the ocean far below, so the dory was secured with these blue ropes.I loved the contrast between the yellow boat and the blue ropes holding it securely. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / laminated print / /

This image was created at the Apollo Bay Docks early in 2008, went here for a holiday just as I was getting into Photography. I went down to the docks just as a storm was rolling in and it made for some interesting weather conditions! This pic was created from one raw file. I changed the exposures in Lightroom and then merged 3 images using Photomatix, increased the blue and green saturation levels in Lightroom and added a bit of contrast. This is the result! The Icelandic Harvester. / / When I came across this old vessel moored to the pier my imagination started running wild with scenarios of what life aboard this wooden vessel would have been like. I could almost feel the sineous texture of the ropes as they hung there coated in the ice cold saltwater of the frigid North Atlantic Ocean. I could nearly hear the calls of the sailors as they shouted commands back and forth across her weather beaten decks as the waves crashed down upon her on any one of her numerous voyages. What sights must have been seen as sailors of old lined the rails to peer down at the mysteries of the sea. Hadn’t been here for around 10 years when I took this photo yesterday, the ship hasn’t moved an inch since i was here last. People can board the Castlemaine on weekends for a small price or during the week by appointment. HMAS Castlemaine (J244/M244/A248), named for the city of Castlemaine in Victoria, Australia, is a Bathurst class corvette of the Royal Australian Navy. Laid down by the Melbourne Harbour Trust at Williamstown in Victoria on 17 February 1941, launched on 7 August 1941 by the then Mrs. R. G. Menzies (wife of Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies) and commissioned at Melbourne on 17 June 1942. Castlemaine paid off to reserve on 14 December 1945 and was immobilised at HMAS Cerberus at Crib Point in Victoria as a training hulk for Engine Room Artificers, who ran the boilers in part providing steam heating throughout the base. In September 1973 the Minister for Defence announced that the Australian Government had made a gift of HMAS Castlemaine to the Maritime Trust of Australia to become a maritime museum. Castlemaine is presently berthed at Gem Pier, Williamstown, Victoria, adjacent to the historic Customs House. Colour selection was done in Lightroom and HDR in Photomatix

As one era passes slowly into the next, these vestiges of a simpler age fall into disrepair, then fall into the sea. / Before the advent of road haulage every seaside community needed either one of these jettys or a railhead connected to the main centre. / The hustle and bustle these places saw, loading thousands of bags of potatoes, millions of superfeet of timber, tons of couta and crayfish and cheeses, untold cattle, sheep, pigs & horses. Not to mention all the worldy goods for the community. Small jetty and boat-shed at Nelson on the Glenelg river in Victoria South Australia. Property of the ‘River Vu’ caravan park. A dull and cloudy day with rain and wind made for a successful black and white conversion of a three shot HDR – converted in Photomatix. Canon 400D 17-85 lens with three shot HDR hand held.
