Breaking up is hard to do The Williamsburg Music Center presents a summer exhibition Hard Heart, July 17- Sept 25, 2009, an exhibition of works by members of the Urban Individualists an international artists collective. Women of the Urban Individualists dissect and examine aspects concerning the heart, from the banal to the complex. Their works subvert expected depictions. Not a typical show of hearts. / / This exhibition includes visual artworks by Helene Ruiz, Wahala Temi, Valerie Styles, Gloria Holwerda-Williams, Mia Hernandez, Mariam Muradian, and Helen Bascom. I will have 5 pieces showing in Brooklyn, New York USA at the Williamsburg Music Center beginning 17 July through 25 September 2009. I am honored to be included in this show with such great artists. This piece will be included in that show. She jerked around corners and grabbed items quickly, briefly studied the label and threw them back on the counter. She seemed to be looking for something, but I couldn’t understand what because she checked every shelf, every display, every category of merchandise. A song came over the loud speaker that had words about loss of love and holding on to a relationship even knowing it is over. The air smelled of vinegar, soap and the stale street outside the large windows filled with mountains of cheap products with labels that were unknown to me. She froze in her space as she held up a bottle of body mist. She had seen me staring. “What the fuck do you want?” She glared at me. / “Nothing. I’m just an artist. I was looking at your face and it seemed interesting.” / A smile tried to smear itself across her mouth, hesitated and then turned into a grimace. / “Thanks,” She said and quickly sped off toward the check out counter. / I felt guilty suddenly. As if I had chased her away. / I saw her look back at me as the clerk added items. / Then she was gone.

Maybe it’s hearing the words “global financial crisis” too many times in the last month, but I keep feeling like everything in the world is expensive, even when it isn’t. What do you mean, three whole dollars for a coffee? Outrageous! I live in my home loan, I eat my food budget, I have no idea where bill money goes, but the purchases I still cherish and make me feel happy every time I see them, are all art. I come home to to walls full of Simone Maynard, Jessica Tremp and many other favorites and it is the best feeling I get all day.
