I very much like the Kiplying poem IF. Which contains many fine lines but perhaps no finer than: “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same” With these sentiments in mind it is possible to (or at least try to) hold a steady course through life’s storms. While one never welcomes disaster it can be less spiritually disturbing than triumph. In disaster we tend to turn to a higher comfort. Whereas in triumph we tend to celebrate of our own (hollow) greatness. The ego puffs and wisdom fades. During my bumpy ride through dotcom 1.0, I met many people who more than drank their fill of Cristal as they celebrated some triumph or another. The parties often had a desperate ring as we dreamed somehow that all of this was sufficiently important that an ultimate bedrock of joy might be found. And when it all collapsed in on itself, those who lost everything seemed no more forlorn than those who managed to escape with a few quid clenched in their hands.

I have been burning my photographs to a re-writable DVD. Now one of them from the 5 pack I bought was glitchy, had a sector error and wouldn’t format. Ok, fine, the next one worked just fine. Until about the third time I viewed the pictures. A mess of corrupted data. I have managed to use a disc utility to recover most of the files from the harddrive. The ones I lost though.. :-/

Lost all my backup files … external HD crashed .. x( Only few that already been backed up to DVD. I’m actually in the process of make some back ups to DVD in recent days. ARGH!! I’ve lost all the important files, including my honeymoon photos with my wife in Bali last January. And all other works. Lesson learn. BTW, is there any way I can download my own high res file that I’ve uploaded in RB? Thanks. Regards, / Sidqie. Sick and Stressed Out.

Our house was in the middle of a flood zone in Newcastle on Friday night. Hence, there will be no photos from me for a while whilst we mop up and repair damage. My family and I made it out safe which is the main thing. Material possessions can always be replaced….although my camera made it to higher ground pretty quickly! For the first time in my life I had a waterfront property….and I now think they are over rated : )

Well a little while ago I let you know that I would be busy for a while and there was some drama going on that I needed to handle but couldn’t get into at the time. / I don’t know how many people will be interested in reading this and I hope it doesn’t come off as a whining session, but I did promise an update when I felt it was safe for me to do so…....so here it is. / I was married to a great guy, we were best friends and shared everything, about 7 years into the marriage things started to change, he stopped telling me things, got very distant and would rarely but ocassionaly lose his temper with the children, slapping them around. He started to be suspicious of every little thing we did and expected the children to instinctively know and follow the rules (or comply as he would say…a handy little word he picked up with his job) As the years passed the loss of temper became more and more with the kids, and with me it was mental beatings, I’m worthless, won’t amount to anything, not worth the time…..you know keeping me down as low as possible. / I was terrified of how I would take care of four children on my own, especially someone so worthless as myself but warned him anyway to get a handle on that temper or it was over. He lost it again and I said I wanted a divorce, he threatned to kill himself and that the children would blame me for the rest of their lives for his death….....so I stayed and tried yet again to make it work, but one night he lost his temper again and I called the police. ............ok ok this ‘update’ is getting way to long….......we’ve been apart since the fall of 2001. Last year my oldest son Nathaniel wanted to go live with him and was getting violent at home with his brothers, it was the hardest decision of my life but in the end I let him go. Then on Nick’s birthday (my youngest) my ex’s girlfriend almost drowned Kristopher my 12 yr old. Threw him in the water over his head while he was screaming at her that he couldn’t swim and begging her to put him down. :( Later on the same day, my ex held Nate underwater, then when they got back to his place he put Kris in a headlock after chasing him down, when Nate tried to help his brother my ex punched Nate in the face and let go of Kris to go after Nate, that gave them the chance to run off and hide for a while. / So in this time I’ve been gone, I’ve been trying to get custody of Nathaniel back without my ex knowing to much about it for fear of how he would react to the children telling me what had happened that day. / The papers came in the mail yesterday, I have all my children back with me where they belong, safe and sound at last. / So I want to thank you all for being so patient with me and even though you didn’t know what was going on or what the drama was, you supported me and help give me the strength to get through yet another of life’s hurdles. / Thank you so much

I’m not big on competitions. Never have been. / But I feel strongly about climate change, so thought I’d ‘make’ a photo (the first time I’ve ever done so much Photoshop work!) and enter it into the Infinate Future Chaos comp. Here’s my entry.. Rather than concern myself with winning (but hey, lets face it, that would ROCK) I also hope a message is delivered along with my image and what I am trying to say. If we all make small changes we become part of large change – and I for one like the planet we have and wouldn’t mind seeing it stick around for a bit longer … Ask yourself what small changes can YOU make. Cheers / Kel P.S Ironically the beach in this shot is the Friendly Beaches on Tasmania’s East Coast. Not so ‘friendly’ now eh? ;-)

As I sink in my chair, strong coffee in hand, wishing it was something more potent…. I wonder if any of you really need to hear my story of disaster, but then I smile and realize I have an important message to share…. You simply must NOT lose yourself in the bubble for too long, or too often. / Life does have habit of sneaking up on you, or past you when you are missing in action…..(or engrossed in the bubble). / It can even be dangerous for health, home and sanity…. / I just learned that the hard way….. Here I sat, several hours ago, morning coffee in hand, the kids were on the school bus, the animals fed, a load of washing was buzzing away in the machine and I felt safe to “indulge” ...... / aaah….even the noises in the laundry, the animal sounds, the bird song could not shake my focus on some of your wonderful images…... and writing my messages back to you…. / UNTIL… / crash…. / bang… / holy shite! / on my front verandah, the sound of hooves….BIG ones! (now I have little horses who often would climb up on my old wooden verandah and clatter around to get my attention, or look for treats, but this was way too big for them!) I carefully open my front door, and there staring me in the face – a big black cow’s butt…..well, a steer’s rear end, to be exact. / This bloody great thing with his herd had wandered into my front yard demolishing everything in sight, and he, with the huge stick on his neck (put there because he kept getting through fences and I can tell you, it obviously hasn’t stopped him!) had decided to climb up the steps and wander casually along my verandah….eating my pot plants…. / So there he was in the sunshine, casually gazing out at his lesser buddies from the height of my humble verandah….. I knew if I scared him from behind like this, he would smash the glass table and chairs, the kids’ bikes and the multitude of potted plants and fall of the high end of the verandah (I live on the slope of a hill) so I thought I might go around and climb out my bedroom window and chase him quietly (ha ha) back to the opening where he might “get off”..... I decided to grab the broom from the laundry to help and as I stepped out to the back half of my house, my feet went ankle deep in water. / The whole room was flooded…. a hose had come unplugged, and both cycles of the washing machine dumped out on the laundry floor…..and you know the best thing about living in an old farm house? / When someone builds on a back room, they do it on the cheap, nobody bothers with a spirit level, so the floors slope the wrong way…..the drain holes are all uphill, and the water floods downhill. / again I say “holy you know what!!” So there was the kids playroom, carpet and couch, the bathroom, the sunroom and laundry all under water, and it was still flowing back through to the rest of my house. Did I use a four letter word? / who? / me? / (No I used dozens! AND made up some new ones….) The bovine was forgotten, I grabbed the broom and started swishing the water back towards any opening where i might get it out of those rooms. Grabbing clothes and clean washing to be folded, and kids toys and books up out of the water…... / aaaah you get the picture. / OF course the water just kept flooding back….. living on a hill has its perks ha ha…...but for this I would need to turn the house around. I wondered if I could knock a hole in the downhill wall and just let it out that way….. / but NO… / it had to be mopped and swished and cleaned up, every damn last drop. On one frantic rush through the house to get more towels and mops, I spied the RB screen waiting on my computer and just thought… / “damn!” Meantime, going into all those dark places under cupboards and behind things, it washed out numerous little inhabitants, the eightlegged kind, so I had a bit of a flood of red back spiders emerging too….. so….that just made it all the more fun. / Living dangerously …. Two hours later, aching back, wet feet, wet everydamnthing…. I drag out the carpets and furniture onto the back lawn, to see the bloody steer’s buddies in my back yard now, eating and shiiitting under my clothesline…. / Where’s the dog when you need her? / (oh of course, running under the house with the wet shoes I put outside to dry, isn’t she!) Then to the front verandah which now has broken boards and the scene of destruction where the clever beastie jumped off the verandah and took all the ceramic pots with him…..smasho! / How can one gentle animal create such a mess ….. (but I shan’t complain because this kind animal saved his bowel movement till he ran off down the track…..phew! mighty thoughtful…..) So…I tell you, next time you sit and indulge at Redbubble, bear in mind that life still goes on around you, and it can catch you up and overtake you in a big bad way if you are not watching…...it can even smash up the front of your house, crap at the back of it and flood everything in between…. but hey, / I came back to Redbubble didn’t I !!!

Had a busy day today, out of the house around 9.30 this morning,(but not before I’d hopped on to RB for my morning fix) swimming lesson for the short one, round to my parents’ house – ending up taking mum out to do her shopping, and got home about 4.00pm. Visitors landed home the same time we did, so I hit the on button on my computer and left it all to fire up while I socialised …. Visitors left, I hopped onto my computer chair and wiggled my mouse …. NOTHING! Nothing but a little flashing white cursor …......... switch off, turn in on again – nada. After a frantic call to a very knowledable friend, it would appear that my motherboard has gone to it’s maker. Hopefully all my stuff is still intact on the drives, but it will be about a week before my computer savvy hubby gets home from a work trip. So at least I can use his ‘puter while he’s away, but I won’t be uploading much stuff I don’t think ….

AZ was wonderful (again). We decided to stay local this time so a typical day would be to set off in the morning somewhere…err….local like one of the national parks, a zoo at one point, a copper mining town (looking for Cornish immigrants or descendents there of), sitting in spiritual vortex’s for a meditate, or just looking for photo opportunities. Then coz eating out is so cheap in the USA one of their huge lunches (which I was never able to fully consume, and whilst ordering, having to explain that I was a vegan and not a veggie else I got offered fish. I learnt that trick on the plane first time round) then home to the ranch to sit by in the pool or read or more meditation. If Cyndi had to do some phone astrological readings (she’s good – gets it spot on with me everytime damn it) I would borrow the jeep drive deeper into the desert; park up then leg it into the wide variously coloured yonder with the camera. Had a navigation problem tho; took several bearings then after wander used to make it back to the road to find myself about a mile away from the jeep. Hmmmm. Was someone moving the mountains around????? Evenings when not partying or having munchies with neighbors were spent being non-plussed by American television. I would be watching a play or something and every ten minutes, and without any prior warning, find myself in a completely non-relevant scene. Took me a while to realise that I was in the middle of an advert for Preparation ‘H’ or similar. But then I get easily confused. Mind you I did the to/from flights from the UK and only got lost in an airport once this time. Anyway about 9.30pm everyone peeled off to his or her beds as did I but not before I sat in the porch UFO watching. Apparently there are so many passing over Sedona that the locals don’t take any notice of them any more. I didn’t see one. Hmmm. Anyroadup the result of the early to bed action would be that I would awaken everyday before dawn. Twas great lying in bed watching the sun come up and if impressive enough stagger out with the camera to capture that or the early touristy balloons floating gently around the mountains. So there you have it – Another Excellent Arizona Adventure. On my return home tho I was confronted by a bit of a disaster. Before I left I burnt all my photoshop Bubble pix to a DVD and cleared 30Gbs of space. I then deleted the pix. I just put the CD into the comp and it’s blank. So I have lost the lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Two things – after the journal entry I made regarding ‘To frame or not to Frame’ I had agreed with the majority and the plan was to delete my framed pix from the bubble then re-upload minus frames. So much for that idea. And the other thing? Well I still have the raw shots in the Kodak programme (successfully burnt to disc). So all is not quite lost. Anyway never mind that I have some scrumptious new AZ shots which if I ever get to the end of the 534 emails aimed at my record label which arrived during my holiday I will get to work uploading. Hope you like them. Actually I played hookie and have a couple ready which I will upload now. Take care Andy

“Did you feel it?” That is the most common thing said after most earthquakes in California! And, today was no exception! I woke up screaming this morning as the earth shook viciously. Glass went flying and I cut my hand!!!! Ouch! It hurts! California experienced a fierce shaker just before noon (my morning, since I was still asleep). It was not as big as some of the shakers we’ve had in the past, but it was centered close to where I live (too close for comfort – 5 miles away, yikes) and so our house was shaken bad. It is true – I screamed like a little girl (and scared my partner awake) and ran to the doorway. I am so afraid of these things, so my nerves are jolted. Plus, it does not help that in the distance you can hear sirens. Phones were dead (including cell phones) for the first several minutes and the only way to contact anyone was through e-mail. My parents were eating at a local joint and they ran outside – mom left her cane behind. Well, I have to go nurse my bleeding hand and deal with all the aftershocks that are rocking our world currently. Plus, I need to run along and turn on the local news so I can here them interview everybody in the area and see if they “felt it”. Pray for us Californians. Please. Here is a news link on Yahoo: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080729/ap_on_re_us/california_earthquake It says it was a 5.8, but the news is saying 5.9/6.0. One thing about every earthquake is that they always give a conservative estimate and then work their way up. By the end of the day, it could be a 7.0! LOL! It’s happened before! God bless everyone else in the Southern California area (I hear they felt it in Las Vegas too) and all those everywhere else…please send us your prayers! Our jolted nerves need it! We will be dealing with aftershocks for at least a week, if not more. And, we are praying that this is the actual earthquake and NOT a fore shock, cause that would be bad!!! I have to go. I am all shook up. I may be away for more than a day to recover… My best to all! ~ Brian P.S. Oh, and Milo, our cat, is okay too! He is old, so we were worried. He was shaken but not stirred! Although, he did refuse to come in the house for awhile! Pets are so easily forgotten during these times!

For those in distant parts of the world who may not be aware – yesterday, 7th Feb 2009 was the hottest day ever in Melbourne Victoria – 46.4c. As a result, especially after the years of low rainfall and especially hot weather in the preceeding weeks, many bushfires burnt out of control all over the state. It is thought that over 40 people may have been killed and hundreds of homes have been lost. The numbers of wildlife and domestic animals killed cannot even be imagined. / We already had an ‘Ash Wednesday’ from nearly 15 years ago. Now we have an ‘Ash Saturday’ as well. It is thought that some of the fires were deliberately lit.

It has now been confirmed that 84 confirmed deaths have occurred with more being discovered during this weekend during the Fire Emergency in the Australian State of Victoria. Along with 700 homes have been destroyed, and the emergency continues with entire towns destroyed. and national parks devastated I would like to pass on our best wishes and thoughts I am sure the members of the groups I host would like to address. I have donated three of my fiery images for the use of Phoenix Appeal which means that I receive no profit from the purchase of these images – rather it will go via this user to bushfire relief. I encourage you all to buy or donate money to this cause – many lives have again been devastated by fire – many more will be I fear. This is an opportunity to help. I have updated my descriptions of the originals of the three images I have donated to link to the Phoenix Appeal versions so that no-one buys the wrong ones.

From now until the end of March I will be donating the profits from any sales from my whole portfolio until the end of March 2009. Below are links to three of my Aussie Calendars! Over 800 homes lost and over 100 lives lost in the Bushfires in our Southern State of Victoria. Floods ravage Northern Queensland with many homeless and lives lost as well. Our Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, believe that its going to get much worse as there are still areas where fire fighters and rescue teams have been unable to reach. My heart goes out to all those who have lost everything and for those who have lost someone they love. Myself and my families, thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by these disasters. Thankyou everyone for your help. If you would like to do the same RB can handle this side of things directly, you just have to send them an email with the details. accounts@redbubble.com Redbubble donating dollar for dollar ........and for the wildlife RSPCA Victoria / Wildlife Rescue and Protection

This short journal, which accompanies the picture in my portfolio, shows the other 4 photographs that I took during February 1983, of the Freight Ferry, European Gateway, which was in a collision with another ship just a few miles from the Suffolk coast, and went down with a loss of 6 lives. / Not to be confused with the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster in March 1987, which was also a Townsend Thoresen ship. Here is a link to the Harwich Lifeboat Station website, who attended the disaster on the 19th December, 1982, which I hope that you find time to read.. Always have respect for the sea, as you never know what may happen to you when you are on it. As with the main picture on my PF, these four pics were taken during a sailing trip along the coast, and we made one circuit of the stricken ferry. / The pictures show the extent of the damage, and the water being pumped from the hull, and in one of the pictures, at the stern of the ship, you can just about make out some of the salvage team on one of the vehicle decks. All pictures were in 35mm format, taken with an Olympus OM1N fitted with various lenses.

After buying yet another terabyte drive When you get addicted to digital photography the never ending quest seems to be how do I backup my images, and once you do that is how do i backup the backup ? Also when I travel what how do I backup my images when I am in the field? Let’s face it your hard drive is going to die one day ! So let’s start a discussion, how do you backup your images? / how do you backup your backup ? / what do you do when you are in the field ? / what are your disaster stories ? / have you learnt from these disasters ? / what tips can you give others ? / do you use any online backup providers ?

I can’t stand this anymore, this waiting that life puts you through.. im tired of watching others do all the things that i wish to do! But then life gets in the way and it stops me, just dropping me beneath my dream! School is one big and clear example.. i know iv only got two months left of it but seriously! the emas and things that i need to get out my way before i can do what i want to do! / And then of course i still have to study and get a profession before i can just be… well at least i am aiming for something thats active! Journalism… with photography! You see, i want to help (save) the world.. i see so many things everyday on television in newspapers, on the radio that just break my heart… it breaks my heart that there are children out me who don’t get food for they don’t have parents or an income.. there are children who have to carry around guns for stupid people commiting actions that are somthing of nightmares. Ther are children who don’t have homes or families and only one change of clothing and here i sit with more shoes than there entire communty put together and i don’t even have that many! Its heartwrenching! The future needs to hurry up so i can do something and not just watch on the side lines and like Jack Johnson says, sitting, waiting wishing for something to come along…. I have already started a charity (well sorta, it will be finalised in a couple of months) called K.I.D which stands for Kids In Distress and helps children who have been affected by war and natural disasters and need help getting back their lives. But i havnt been able to complete it for school has prevented me from doing so but then again, my wonderful school Penryn College has given me grounding for this as we are the largest outreach school in Africa and help educate teachers in poor areas on good teaching. But i want to do something more! I watched a documentary tv programme called Carte Blanch tonight and it covers stories we should know about. They covered a story about an organistation called Invisible Children and they are helping children who have been forced into being child soldiers in Uganda.. please support them, its needed! If anyone has any recommended charities that help children that have been hurt by disasters or war, please say so we can support! Thank you
