This image is based on a photograph taken at the sea shore in a fishing village in the southwest of Ireland. The day was dull and grey, so I made a few modifications in Photoshop to give the slightly surreal image presented here

An Blascaod Mór / / Although now uninhabited, the Blasket Islands were once home to a thriving community, cut off from the rest of Ireland by the two miles of sea forming the Blasket Sound. As a Gaelic-speaking community, away from the influence of the rest of the country, the islands had gained a reputation for refinement of language that attracted scholars to their shores in the summer months. / / In the early years of the 20th century, some of these visitors persuaded a few of the islanders to write their autobiographies as a record of island life. These, together with books and papers by the visiting scholars, give a fascinating insight into the experiences, joys and sorrows of an island community whose way of life has now disappeared for ever. / / More from the Blasket Islands: / / / /

Thick fog was rolling across the Conor Pass. It was frightening how fast it moved and the light and scene changed utterly. Here’s it’s obscuring the road down the Pass, making the too-narrow road even more treacherous. I think by the time we left, even this stretch of road and the car park was covered in a thick white fog.
I photographed the beach at Couminole on the Dingle Peninsula back in 2006 when there was a beach there. There was no sand to be seen during repeated visits there in September 2007. I had actually quite forgotten I had taken this so it was nice to see the lovely sandy beach! Trivia – a well known member of Mallow Camera Club who shall remain nameless was caught by the tide and had to remain sitting on the rocks for several hours in wet, foggy and rough conditions until the tide went out again.

Dingle Ireland /
This little island off the Dingle Penninsula in County Kerry Ireland has many names because of its shape. On this hazy day when I took a trip around this beautiful part of Kerry – the sleeping giant or ‘an fear marbh’ (meaning dead man) looked so at ease that I had to just stop and stare and take my ease for the rest of the day.

This mountainous finger of land which juts into the Atlantic Ocean has supported various tribes and populations for almost 6,000 years. Because of the peninsula’s remote location, and lack of specialised agriculture, there is a remarkable preservation of over 2,000 monuments. The Dingle Peninsula’s isolated location on the edge of the known world was possibly the reason that such a concentration of Early Christian monastic sites were founded there. Today there are over 30 monastic sites with a variety of remains such as oratories, cross slabs, holy wells, beehive huts, shrines, burials, sun dials, and enclosing features. Canon EOS 350D SLR
