Collaboration with my good friend George , a.k.a. monocotylidono , who kindly trusted me with the post-processing of one of his beautiful flower shots. It was a pleasure and an honour to work on this project. George’s photos are so inspiring! When George saw my first draft, a title for this wilting tulip immediately sprang to his mind. Requiem for a Tulip ! I had started working with another sheet of music, celebrating the spring, but with this new title and orientation, George and I decided upon something moodier and darker, more appropriate for a flower’s death. I found the music scores of Requiem for a Dream by Clint Mansell, which I printed, photographed, then modified in Photoshop. I think that it blends very pleasantly with the subject. Below are all the layers used in the composite, with various blending modes and opacities. The original image and the green moss layer have both received a selective colour adjustment layer in order to tone down the yellow and greens a bit, and changing them to richer and deeper colours. Finally, on top of all the textures shown below, I added a transparent layer at low opacity, on which I used some large grunge brushes in black, to add scratches and dirt smudges to the corners and edges, creating a textured vignetting effect. Position your cursor over the thumbnails for more details on the images and how they were used in the composite / / / Should you wish to listen to George’s favourite inspiration for the title, just click on this link to the Requiem (Grande Messe des Morts) Lacrymosa by Hector Berlioz on YouTube. I must add that this is my favourite as well! For those who would like to listen to the music associated to the score in the composite, please click here for the soundtrack of the movie Requiem for a Dream Finished in 5th position of Top Ten in the Single Beautiful Tulip challenge of the Tulips Group on March 30, 2009 My friend George, aka monocotylidono entered his copy of this creation in the challenge Let’s Collaborate of the Live, Love, Dream Group, and it finished in 5th position of Top Ten ! Well done, George! :-)
They say that physical activity is a fountain of youth. I certainly agree when looking at the Tugboat Daniel McAllister ! This is the largest preserved tug in Canada, and the second-oldest preserved oceangoing tug in the world. She was originally launched in 1907 under the name of Helena , working the Atlantic coast. In the 1940s, she was converted from a steam to a diesel engine, while serving on the Great Lakes. She underwent a complete refit in 1956, and was renamed Helen M.B. Then she acquired her final name of Daniel McAllister in the 1960s (after a member of an important ship owning family), and retired from service in the 1980s. She is now displayed in the Old Port of Montreal, as part of the Musée maritime du Québec (maritime museum) to ensure her preservation. This is a composite made of the three images below: My original image was shot in the Old Port of Montreal, 2 weeks ago. The boat looked so new compared to the old grain elevators in the background, which are only a year older, but look much more the worse for wear. One of the textures that I photographed on the same day, to which I added a vignette. Available for free download under a Creative Commons Licence. This texture is a photo of a rock wall stained with limescale that I shot three weeks ago. I thought that it fit the theme very nicely, and gave a nice aged look to the image. Also available for free download under a Creative Commons Licence. Near Sun Canyon Lodge, west of Augusta, Montana, there’s a herd of mules and horses that belong to an outfitter. We enjoy seeing this herd when we travel there looking for photos. Abstract fractal featuring a variety of shapes, curves, and patterns. Created in Sterling 2.
Best viewed larger / This mixed media work started with one of my Ultra fractal designs. With the tools of Photoshop I started to work with the negative of the fractal. The big job was to create again the (shapes of) the composition and creating/adding new patterns and shapes. After lots of hours I ended with this endresult. / Designer: Thea Walstra / /
December 09 : I’ve decided to re-work this one. It’s my best seller, so why would I change a good thing? / Because I felt it could still be better. / I wanted to ramp up the colour a little, & gave it a grungier border. I hope you enjoy this edit.
