Idoru (Japanese idol, aidoru), the term often refers to female performers in their late teens and early twenties who achieve fame through publicity in the mass media, young girls are often plucked by talent scouts at an early age based primarily on their looks. / In Japan the butterfly is seen as a symbol of young womanhood. “If he’d anticipated her at all, it had been as some industrial strength synthesis of Japan’s last three dozen top female media faces. That was usually the way in Hollywood, and the formula tended to be even more rigid, in the case of software agents – eigenheads, their feautures algorithmically derived from some human mean of proven popularity. / She was nothing like that. / Her black hair, rough-cut and shining, brushed pale bare shoulders as she turned her head. She had no eyebrows, and both her lids and lashes seemed to have been dusted with something white, leaving her dark pupils in stark contrast. / And no her eyes met his. / He seemed to cross a line. In the very structure of her face, in geometries of underlying bone, lay coded histories of dynastic flight, privation, terrible migrations.? / “Idoru? William Gibson, 1996, page 175.
Umeboshi (Japanese : ; literally “pickled ume”) are a Japanese pickle (tsukemono) and are well known for their healing properties and sourness. The Ume tree (Prunus Mume) is a species of the asian plum. Umeboshi are made by harvesting ume fruit when they ripen around June and pickling them in jars with seasoned pickling liquid, or vinegar. Purple perilla (member of the mint family) leaves are often added to the mix, giving the Umeboshi a dark red colour. Umeboshi are often eaten with white rice and can be found in a variety of bento boxes due to their high salt and citric acid content, which acts as a preservative.

Another work from a series called “Divorce”.
Medium: Digital / Size: 9.2” x 5.2” / Description: Completed in 2007 by digitally colouring ink drawings of 2 tripods, each taking 3 hours to pen. Based on the brilliant novel War of the Worlds by H G Wells. I wanted to really design the tripod in a different way to what had been done before. I wanted to show that the machines themselves were originally designed by the martians to use on their own dusty home world, hence the desert inspired hoods. Also, after extensive reading of the books, I devised my own interpretation of the legs and drew up sliding disk mechanisms that would allow the tripod a graceful movement. I designed them with my own back story, in that the Martian’s had surveyed our planet since the dinosaurs and modeled their walkers on the giant lizards to strike fear into our minds. I was a long process, but it wanted to do it justice. In fact, the tripod design I have concocted is still a work in progress and I will devote more time to their workings. Medium: Digital / Size: 5” x 7” / Description: Created in a trail version of Photoshop, June 2009, this piece started out as an acrylic painting on textured canvas paper. I felt I had painted myself into a corner with this piece, so I transferred it to the computer to finish it. The Witch King came about, not from Tolkien’s creation of the same name, but more on the idea of a Burrow Wrights, Liches and Psychopomps. Whilst researching another painting, I found numerous articles on these types of ghostly beings and decided to create a character based loosely around these archetypes of the fantasy genre. Ghosts, to me, represent a manifestation of the fear of the unknown, the almost unexplainable. Although I don’t personally believe in the existence of such entities, my non-belief doesn’t stop me from illustrating them Some of the print types available: / Greeting Card / Framed Print / Laminated Print / This piece appears in the Dark Calendar: / / Buy it HERE Original Does Not Exist Contact me at lloydharvey@shrunkenheaddesign.co.uk / www.shrunkenheaddesign.co.uk
