I bought myself a new camera last week. It is an entry level digital SLR Pentax K100D. Got a (what I think) is a great price. And I am having a ball with it so far. I was really unsure that I would be able to take good pictures as I have never touched a SLR before but the automatic settings make it almost point and shoot to start off with. I plan on learning how to use the manual settings but I am so amazed at the quality of the images. I love it! Next weekend I will venture into Melbourne ( weather permitting) and will try my hand at outdoor shots. I had always been disappointed with the quality of pictures I took in Melbourne with a cheap $100 digital camera and film camera that were all I could afford previously. I want to retake some shots that I took which came out grainy due to the poor flash and low megapixels. Can’t wait!

The last couple of weeks or so have been a flurry of new toys and things related to photography. First up, I acquired a Lomo Lubitel 166B and have had one film through it already. I have to say I’m pretty smitten with it. As much as I love my digital SLR there’s “something” about shooting with a camera that’s so low-tech. There’s something just a little “different”, in a good way, about how the results look: And then, late on last week, I got a Canon PowerShot G9. I’ve been after a really good compact digital camera ever since I got my digital SLR (a Canon EOS 400D) and, for me, the G9 seems just perfect. Not too small. Not too big. Easy enough to take everywhere. Plenty of auto stuff for those moments when you don’t want to be faffing about while, at the same time, manual control for those times when you do. I ventured out with it over the weekend and I’m pretty pleased with the results so far. And, last but not least, three cards that I’d ordered turned up last Saturday:

I have wanted for some time to incorporate my graphic design background into my photography. Just the thought of being able to create new images from old and dear photos, or in some case to make something interesting out of images that were somehow lacking the interest that I had hoped to originally capture has intrigued me for several years. I decided that 2008 would be the year to go off on a new adventure and explore new dimensions in my artwork. I hope you enjoy my new images and give me feedback and critiques to help me with this journey. THe last few images that I have added are my first attempts. Happy 2008 to all of you. It has been such a pleasure to meet you all!

Now here is a book that I can’t wait to get my hands on. For all those who had the privilage of poking around in the chemical world, Katrin Eismann and Seán Duggan have brought together a book that tries to duplicate the old darkroom effects in Photoshop. THE CREATIVE DIGITAL DARKROOM Anyone who has an interest (as I do) in photo restoration and retouching will know who Katrin Eismann is. Considered one of the leaders in her knowledge of photo restoration using Photoshop. KATRIN EISMANN Must go search Amazon :-)

Awhile back ago I had decided which camera I wanted, a Canon Rebel XTI. Have a Canon Rebel G from many years ago which I intend to sell because we have moved into the digital age. So i’ve been doing some shopping and was quite suprised. Now camera shops to me have always had the reputation of being pricey but giving you good service. I figured with the way today’s economy is taking a downturn and people are spending less that all stores are suffering, including the camera shops. Yesterday I went in to a dealer and asked if he had the model I was looking for. “Yeah, LAST one” (isn’t that what they always say?). They didn’t sell the body only and wouldn’t budge in the price. What’s the point of going to the shop if I can buy it cheaper online and not even have to pay sales tax?? I don’t see how they stay in business. So i decided to take the plunge, i’ve been excited about it for quite sometime now because I miss using my old SLR but was equally excited with my Canon A620 because of all the new features and being digital. When i tally up the total including the lens and battery charger it’s over 1K! That my friends, I can honestly say, will be the most money i’ve ever spent on myself. I’m serious (cars don’t count…and even there i’m very cheap..lol) So i’ve got the items looming in my sales cart, nervous about pushing that button to buy because of the coming christmas season and all the other spending that i’ll be doing. This means i’ve had to spend moderately. But I am excited! I am hoping and wondering if my old camera filters and lens cap will fit on my new lens, that will save me some money. Seems like they would be I just don’t know Which also got me to thinking, as i’ve been taking more pictures. Currently I try and frequently back up my photos to a CD. I don’t trust having them stored on the PC simply because these computers ALWAYS crash at some point and all data is lost forever. How do you back-up your photography? Do you have multiple methods/sources? I’ve seen online storage sites, some you pay and some you don’t. But is this ideal, can others access or download your photographs? Please share, i need some guidance to make sure that i’m properly storing my photos so i don’t end up losing them due to modern technology. Thanks and happy photo taking!

  • New Series
    by Arletta

Today, I have started working on a new series of digital paintings – well, primarily digital – based on a drawing I did using oil paints and markers. More precisely, I started out by using a piece of art paper to, allegedly, smooth another picture which had been done in oil pastels, crayons, and marker (mostly oils). This piece had, for reasons which should be obvious, become quite besmirched mostly with black. I had, as I was allegedly smoothing the other piece, made sure and folded this paper in various ways, so that there would be an interesting variety to the markings. Then, I drew hree red trees on it, with a watercolor marker. Later on, wielding my Sharpie, I drew black outlines of, and on, the very same trees. Mind you, I love the wee little piccie, just as it is, but … I also loved playing around with it, using different alchemy settings, redrawing bits of it, and making new pieces for the series from it. It’s not finished, mind you, but, I do have several that are rather close to done. That’s part of the loveliness of doing digital, for, while it can take a long time to get a certain effect and it doesn’t have the same way of smearing and blending as the real paints and such, you also don’t have to muck about trying to find your Prussian Blue, mixing paint colors, or rinsing your brushes. Time saver, that!
