I’ve got a dilemma. I have been using medium format bricks for the past few years, and I like em lots. However over the years I have noticed DSLRs slowly get better and better, and been seduced by the smooth looking tones, the high ISO powers, and above all the ease of it all. So, after saving up for ages, I have just bought a fancy new digital camera. I call it my space camera. I like it alot, I lust after buying it new lenses to see, new battery grips to give it more stamina, and giant amounts of memory for its brain. I think I am slowly getting used to how much more complicated photography is with such a huge number of buttons and choices. However, I can’t seem to damn well take any really good photos with it. Last weekend I kind of gave up, and went out armed with the old 1-2 combination: Holga + Mamiya C330, and everything was back to normal. It was like the feeling you get after you glasses or something, I could see again! Why is this???? Does anyone know? Weird.

Well I finally have done what I have been wanting to do for a long time. I purchased a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI 10.1 MP. I have been wanting a full Digital SLR camera for a very long time. It is my very first one. I currently own the Canon Powershot S3 but it was limiting me way to much. / I also purchased a killer lens. / The Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Autofocus Lens So hopefully soon I will be uploading some new work. Sorry to say I have not bought the IR filter yet. / Also on Friday I am beginning my first class as a member of / The Cleveland Photographic Society Its a class that meets every week for learning and competitions. / Also do field trips. I would like to thank everyone on this site for inspiring me to get more involved with Photography.

As a continuation of the ‘chain-survey’ started by Jo O’Brien. / I have interviewed Irene Burdell that is a photographer and also paints watercolors. Heloisa – Are you surprised with the result of their own pictures? Irene – I am surprised quite often when I get a really good result , but I still get quite a few disappointments ,when I think I have captured something really well and then I download it ,it may be slightly out of focus by then the moment has gone . Heloisa – Where does it look for inspiration in their works to get her objective? Irene – As I have only been doing photography for a year now , I have got a lot of inspiration from some of the other wonderful artists on redbubble Jason Connolly for one , ,also my son who is a photographer. He has been very helpful to me and it is never too much trouble for him if I need any advice . Heloisa – Which of their works does the best consider and why? Irene – My favourite works to date are one I posted yesterday , “Sunrise at Biscarrosse” and ” Bergerac France ” the courtyard . Sunrise at Biscarrosse because I consider it to be the best sunrise picture I have ever taken and I sat for an hour waiting for the right moment . The Bergerac one because my son Darren said it was the best picture I have taken to date and I respect his judgement .

This is a ‘how to’ do the through the viewfinder or ttv technique written for all of you that have expressed interest recently. It is by no means a rule book because I think each person would approach it differently but this is how I manage it..and remember with ttv really there ARE NO RULES :) It will require you to use that creative imagination but this is honestly half the fun of it!! I should give you some background info firstly, it is rumored to have first been thought of by Mr E on Flickr back in 2005 but there are is no hard proof of this just speculation on my behalf. TTV is still really huge on flickr with hundreds of groups dedicated to the different styles and subjects of ttv eg nature, black&white, manipulated, ferriswheels, self-portraits, etc etc So firstly ..what you are going to need, the essentials; / 1- a twin reflex camera eg. Kodak Duaflex, Argus75, or any other camera that has a large viewfinder. NB Most can be picked up from flea markets or ebay for as little as $5. Most take 620 film that is no longer made/available so this is why they are so cheap plus they are a dime a dozen as they were mass produced in the 1950s & 60’s. / 2- a digital camera with a pretty good macro so you are able to zoom in nice and close to the viewfinder / 3- a tripod certainly helps but isn’t essential / 4- something to block out excess light from above that shines onto your viewfinder glass, this can be a specially made box, a round piece of cardboard, or anything else that will do the job that you have laying about. / 5- a good sense of humor and a healthy dose of patience!! Here’s some of my twin reflex kids / This is the argoflex 75 and the kodak duaflex / This is an ansco and not my gun shells there ..its goose shooting season here and I have included them for size comparison. I wouldn’t recommend the ansco to start with as its really fiddley!! / This is looking down at the ansco’s viewfinder. / This is zooming in as tight as possible with my macro lens. / This is the image that has been cropped and is now ready for what ever colour adjustments or processing you wish to do. / OK so this isn’t my image of choice here but you get the general idea.. / This is a random piece of cardboard tube that I now use to block out excess light reflecting on the viewfinder glass. / Here is the side view..if you insist on being really anal about it you get some ideas for building the exact fit to your camera from flickr here If you would like a really indepth tutorial I can recommend Russ Morris’s here A few other points I’d like to add….some may wonder why go to all this trouble when you can do all of this with photoshop (fake ttvs) well my answer to that is I really like being able to see what image I want to create in the field and quite frankly it is so much more fun and creative to be actually ‘out there’ doing it! Secondly I don’t think all images or concepts are suited to the ttv style so this will be a matter of trial and error to see what fits for you. Lastly -the ttv style is all about embracing age and the antique-look of an image so think carefully about your post processing. Alot of ttv actually looks wonderful all on its own and I think many would be shocked at how little I actually do to some ttvs. Please use this link if you wish to find out more about the different processes and for free photoshop downloads here / that help achieve the vintage, grungey look. A great one to start with is urban acid :) Here’s a few more … / An urban acid ttv There you go…I think thats it?? Let me know if you need to know more or perhaps I’ve left something out…and don’t forget there is a Through the Viewfinder / group for ‘real’ ttvs when you are all ready to go!! Cheers Everyone!! Jules :)

I recently bought a calendar from laurenrabbit and three more from my own collection of work. The quality is outstanding! The price may seem a bit high, but the ability to see many large prints of great work is really good for the money. I mention this because we photographers are not all completely happy with the way our digitized photos look on this site. They do print up very well however, and I strongly recommend you buy some calendars for somebody this Christmas. The framed prints they make here are gorgeous as well. I now have four of them… : )

hey to all of my sydney bubblers please join the new sydney exhibition group u’ll find it in my groups or just read the title of this journal, it is also for the people in the blue mountains ,newcastle, wollongong and the central coast, it will inform you about what is going on art wise in all types of artistic media get you word out about what’s happening with you or someone you know. / wouldn’t it be great to have a tonne of bubblers just rock up at your show- it happens and it is a fantastic feeling. / as one person doing a show it is hard when you can’t get your word out to other artists but as a group the word can just spread with unlimited possibilities. / steve

Yes I’m still alive. Well, I think I’m still alive anyway. A tall goat like creature with a name which resembles that of a quality silk like fabric keeps poking me in the back with some sort of gardening fork. Getting very hot in here too….. / hmmm. So anyway, I’m currently working on a very ambitious project which involves bringing my artwork to life through various animation techniques, something I’m really developing on my own as I go since there is no status quo for this kind of project. I’ve kept the project very quiet so far but my initial experiments have been very promising so I can openly talk about parts of it now and I’m hoping to have a sneak peek or an example up some time soon as well. But more recently, I’ve been featured and interviewed in issue 20 of NewWebPick magazine which I’m very excited about since the publication has a readership of over 3 million people. It’s brought some great exposure towards my work which I’m very grateful for. / I’m also collaborating on a very interesting book design with US author Jasper Faolan, and have been approached by 3 separate bands about some artwork and album covers. / So yes, I’m keeping busy and, holy cr@p I go back to Uni next week and I’ll be completing my degree in 13 weeks time! ahhhhhhh! Then honors!!! hmmm stop poking me!!! Peace & love – Cameron

The highlights of my week on Red Bubble were serveral. Number one had to be getting approval for the Southern United States Artists group. I am accepting work with an eye toward exhibition and have high aspirations for it. I am glad to have Levi Moore (no relation), a.k.a. artmonger as my co-host. Just as exciting is the start of production on Frans List: Art, featuring some fine artists of Red Bubble. More on that as I get closer to the first feature show. New American Landscape / Third on the list, but truly inspirational, was the six features awarded to New American Landscape. New American Landscape shows Gargoyles, one of which is tatooed as Mont-n-sano. The work represents Monsanto’s decimation of the farmer and agriculture as we know it. This is due, in part, to their patenting of genes found in the wild, and claiming ownership rights to everything that has “their” gene. The farmer, and his wife, in the window of the gothic house, are meant to evoke the classic “American Gothic” painting. Obviously, though, something is amiss. Many thanks to the various groups who either recognized the aesthetics and digital expertise in the work, the writing that accompanied it, and/or who recognized my attempt to bring about awareness. I am grateful for the honor and the exposure. Those groups are: Freedom in Words and ART, Digital Art Compilations, Current Issues, Politics, Race, Sexuality and Culture, Core [C.O.R.E], and Digital Artists United. Thank you all for featuring New American Landscape. / New American Landscape Rural Landscape / The first in that series was “Rurual Landscape”, which I purposely released in advance and let sit a couple of days; hoping you would admire its beauty, before I hit you with “New American Landscape”. And you fell for it! Rural Landscape was featured by ImageWriting and Freedom in Words and ART. I’m very grateful for these features. Rural Landscape was used as the basis in “New American Landscape”, where the Gargoyles and shadows visibly change the mood and the area. / Rural Landscape Immersion and Rain Catcher I was very pleased to see both Immersion and Rain Catcher featured by Abstrict Digital Art and Writing and Freedom to Shine, respectively. These works are more or less experiments with incorporating similar artworks within one, in a non-obvious way, to create compatible works. Many thanks to these wonderful group hosts. My Hero, Life-Giver, and The Choice-II Finally some old favorites got featured again; so that was a great surprise. My Hero by the in-between group; Life-Giver by Dimensions and The Choice-II by Impressionist Art. That was the 3rd feature for both My Hero and The Choice – II, and the sixth feature for Life-Giver. Abnoba, goddess of the Black Forest and Danube / Last but not least, Abnoba, goddess of the Black Forest and Danube placed in the top10 of The Divine Feminine’s Celtic Goddess Challenge. She hasn’t won any features, but I’m fond of her anyway, and her little animal friends! Below is the summary. LATEST FEATURES 2009-07-05 The Choice-II in Impressionist Art / 2009-07-04 New American Landscape in Digital Artists United / 2009-07-04 New American Landscape in Core [C.O.R.E] / 2009-07-04 New American Landscape in Politics, Race, Sexuality and Culture / 2009-07-04 New American Landscape in Current Issues / 2009-07-03 Life-Giver in Dimensions / 2009-07-03 New American Landscape in Digital Art Compilations / 2009-07-02 New American Landscape in Freedom in Words and ART / 2009-07-02 Abnoba, goddess of the Black Forest and Danube top10 in Celtic Goddess Challenge / 2009-06-30 Rural Landscape in Freedom in Words and ART / 2009-06-30 Rural Landscape in ImageWriting / 2009-06-29 Immersion in Abstrict Digital Art and Writing / 2009-06-28 Rain Catcher in Freedom to Shine / 2009-06-28 My Hero in in-between
