  • just for something completely different I thought I’d post an image taken with a tiny plastic panorama camera. I really do love my toy cameras and find them ever so much fun…. and as they all take film….. its right up my particular alley….. this dreamy shot is taken at a tiny pocket park on Sydney Harbour in Lavender Bay right next to a friend of mines place. / The soft diffuse light effect is not a photoshop filter and was done in camera by holding a funny stirated bit of plastic ( other wise know as a rainbow filter ) over the tiny plastic lens of the camera while shooting….... its been cleaned up a bit on PS and resized etc but that is all the extra fiddling it’s had. / On balance I’d rather shoot what I see in my mind in the camera than spend time tweaking it about later with the same old same old software every one else uses…. anyway its a bit of something completely different…... don’t want you all to get bored now…...:) here it is framed….. / / probably best viewed large….... enjoy

  • In the horse capital of the world. I was out on Old Frankfort Pike and the surround roads on a rather cold autumn day, when I saw these beauties. The land belongs to one of the thoroughbred farms, either Three Chimneys or Darby Dan.

  • This is Lendal bridge in York, crossing the river Ouse, slowly being revealed in the morning fog. The boats are part of the fleet that provides river tours and views which relate to York’s past as a working port. Converted into albumen in PSP

  • Flash Modifiers - Why Use Them?

While playing around practicing with flashes, I thought I’d do some test shots to show the effects of different modifiers. But for comparison, here’s a direct flash shot. There’s shadows on the wall, on the dog from its tongue, it’s hard and unflattering, and can be a lot worse with a person. When using a speedlight one of the easiest solutions is to bounce it. It’s pretty much eliminated the wall shadows, softened the light as a whole, but there’s still shadows underneath the mouth from the light bouncing down off the ceiling. To fill in the shadows on the subject you can combine bouncing the flash off the ceiling with a bounce card. A business card held on with an elastic band will get the job done, and some flashes have them built in. This is the built in card on the SB900 / It’s reduced shadows in the subject, introduced a catchlight in the eye, but has also once more added a slight shadow to the wall behind. Nowhere near as bad as the direct flash. You can buy products such as the Lumiquest Pocketbouncer. These work on the same principal as a bounce card but are much larger. / The pocket bouncer stops light bouncing off the ceiling and just directs it to the subject. You can get all sorts of types, including those with holes to filter some light through to the ceiling. This is the pocketbouncer, but there’s a whole range of different items available. / It’s gives a lot more direct light than bouncing, but like direct flash, it’s got more noticable shadows, though not as pronounced. You’ll have seen flashes with what looks like a bit of tupperware on top. / These diffusers are my favourite. This came with my SB900 but you can buy them to fit most any speedlight for around $20-30 / Pointed up or at an angle it’ll still bounce light off the ceiling providing a softer light, and works quite well in locations where you can’t bounce off a ceiling. Another great way to get rid of those pesky shadows on walls is to use an off camera flash to overexpose the wall behind. This can mess with your metering a bit, but like anything in photography, a bit of fiddling with settings and you should be able to find something that works for you.

  • Photographed at Pembroke Dock, Wales one misty Easter morning. The sun was just managing to break through, revealing the very faintest of detail on the water. I could just make out some white blobs in the mist and with autofocus struggling, I managed to capture this quiet, soft, simple image. Canon 10D / 1/125th sec at f14 / 35-135mm Canon EF lens at 135mm / ISO 100 Processing: Cropped and cleaned up in Lightroom, contrast manipulated to enhance detail, gentle unsharp masking.

  • Forest fires and heat throughout Alaska have obscured the Chugach range and limited opportunities to practice landscape photography. I learned much after posing the query, What makes a good landscape photo?, but must wait to work on better foregrounds. However, upon reflection, ahem, other photographic opportunities exist. Nikon D200, Nikkor 70-300mm VR, f/5.6, 1/250, -0.67 exposure compensation, 85mm focal length, ISO 100, 2-stop ND grad, Speedlight SB-800 with diffuser bounced off white wall, Manfrotto tripod. Oh, and a patient poppy plucked from the wilds of Alaska. (If that’s not too anthropomorphic for you.)

  • The swinging friend haha sry.. erm.. the friend you can also see on a swing on my other picture, listening to music with my beloved Grado Headphones.

  • White cherry blossom trees in a row, in an orchard during the spring season, located in PA. / Classic image feel applied by adjusting the color tones to a yellowish color, deepening the contrast and adding vignette. To create a unique finish on this look I softened the image using a FX diffusion filter. • Nikon D70/Original Lens Baby I feel so blessed to have several trees in my yard that are always quite willing to be photographed. I shot this Japanese Maple yesterday afternoon in the most gloriously diffused overcast light you can imagine. The Lens Baby is perfect for this type of image.
