Colourful houses stacked onto the hillside around Brixham harbour in Torbay, South Devon, with the setting sun perfectly complimenting the illuminated shopfronts on the harbourside. A single trawler is moored beside the quay safely home from a day of fishing. The fishermen had their catch of the day, as did I. View the rest of our portfolio here Or visit our own website here
A blustery winters day on Teignmouth beach, Devon, UK / Taken at 3.00pm F22, 60secs, 10 stop ND filter
Bigbury Bay in South Devon, England
Every Sunday a steam train makes it way down from Bristol to Kingswear filled with steam enthusiasts, mainly on the main Paddington to Penzance line. Quite exciting to see it pass Dawlish at about 40MPH with the whistle blowing and people cheering it on it’s way along the scenic coastal section of the trip.

I went over to my former home town of Totnes in South Devon UK.,this morning having checked that high tide was at 09,56 and all was still with the River Dart like a mirror and beautiful lateral warm light. A similar scene to my earlier Reflections of the Past image that was taken with my trusty old Nikon D100. Still getting accustomed to all the features on my recently purchased Nikon D300 but was more than pleased with the results of the images I took this morning, this one having little editing, just a slight perspective crop and a little sharpening. Exeter’s beautiful 1000 year old cathedral has the longest continually vaulted ceilng in the World. I carefully composed this image of a short section of the vaulted ceiling to be as symmetrical as possible and give a pleasing patternation created by the lines of the gilt decorated structural beams. As a footnote to anyone else trying this kind of composition, you get quite a bit of attention from others when you spend over an hour laying on your back in such a sacred building trying to get that special image. An eerie calm is enjoyed as the sun sinks down and at the end of a beautiful day and casts it’s golden hues on the River Teign in South Devon, UK.
Well this one that settled on the bow of a small boat in front of me certainly seemed to be enjoying the peace and beauty of the moment as much as I was. An eerie atmosphere as the sun was setting on the River Teign in Devon UK., I am told that the geography of this part of the river gives most unusual colours during a sunset from yellow to golden bronze.
The current abbey was built by an order of Benedictine monks and was completed less than a hundred years ago though an abbey has stood on this site for over 1000 years. / Situated in the small village of Buckfast below the foothills of the Dartmoor National Park, over recent years a strong commercial side has evolved in the abbey with regular visitors, gift shops and a restaurant. / World famous for the production and sale of their fortified wine and honey from a unique strain of honey bees which goes towards the upkeep and education of children in the local school amongst many other things. / Many of the locals now nickname the abbey Fast Buck Abbey but the money is well spent within the local community and a visit is more than worthwhile. Taken in warm evening light.
The last mile or so of the mighty River Dart in Devon UK., taken a couple of weeks ago from an elevated viewpoint some 250 feet above the river at the ancient historic port of Dartmouth. As you look towards the estuary as the river narrows the ancient fortified Kingswear and Dartmouth castles sit each side of the river, still armed with the cannon that protected the port back in Elizabethan times during the war against the Spanish. Not sure how much of the detail you can appreciate at this viewing resolution but I was amazed at the detail in that patchwork of farming fields more than a mile away when viewed full size. Taken at Cockington Village just outside Torquay in Devon UK. The ancient village is a real step back in time for the visitor and most of the centuries old houses have thatched roofs like this one, the Higher Lodge. Ponies and traps are available all through the Summer months for a scenic trip round the village and the friendly drivers are full of information about the historic village. Time to try something different and I’d appreciate your honest feedback on this one please. Two highly reflective images taken in the portrait format, slightly cropped and reduced in size to fit on a black mask, total image size is 4500×3000. I took both of these images within minutes of one another from each side of the old bridge over the River Dart in my former home town Totnes, Devon. The PAST image is of the former warehouses and church converted to luxury riverside apartments, the PRESENT being a new block of colourful riverside houses recently built on the site of a former garage business. The farmer who breeds and shows these magnificent Shire horses had stopped near his Dartmoor farm at Ponsworthy to give the horses a bit of a breather so I was pleased to get the opportunity of a few close-up shots of them. Undoubtedly a proud team, not only the horses but also the farmer and his wife who lavish so much care and attention in keeping them up to top show standard. Shire horses are reputedly the largest breed of heavy horse in the world, both of these had been sired by King, who at the time was in the Guinness book of Records as being the largest heavy horse anywhere at almost 20 hands, that is almost 80 inches high to it’s shoulder. An early morning seascape from my neighbouring town of Paignton as the sun was rising and giving a pleasing warm glow to the old pier. I am always fascinated at how gulls seem to settle down during a sunrise or sunset, there were dozens in flight a few minutes before I took this shot and as the sun broke through, all but a few had settled down on the roof of the pier buildings, adding to that eerie calm of the sunrise. Nikon D100 / 38mm / F7.1 for 1/200sec.
In a sleepy hollow below the little Dartmoor village of Walkhampton, the River Walkham makes it way off the high moor ground with the ancient stone Huckworthy Bridge crossing it next to the former Post Office. A little known part of the moors to tourists and so peaceful, I often enjoy a walk down from the village along the riverside to escape the many visitors who at times overcrowd the moors. For all those of you who like me, have had enough of Winter gloom and are looking forward to Spring and all the exciting photo opportunities it brings. Taken on a visit to Stover Lake, near Newton Abbot in South Devon a couple of years ago, the two proud swans swam gracefully towards me with their three young fluffy cygnets as if to say, MEET THE FAMILY Nikon D100 / 70 – 300 zoom @ 190mm / 1/640sec / CP Filter
Following on from my previous image of Cockington Mill in Devon, this image was taken from Cockington village square looking up the hill towards the entrance to the mansion and it’s grounds. / The building on the right is the Old Granary, now a popular gift shop and a little further up the hill is the Weaver’s Cottage, now a popular old world tea room where traditional Westcountry cream teas are served (YUMMY) / The village square is also the starting point for the popular pony and carriage trips around the ancient village, I will be posting at least one with the ponies in it soon. Nikon D100 / 18 – 70 Zoom @ 27mm / F11 for 1/60sec / CP Filter used.
Following on my little series from Cockington village in Devon, at the top of the village next to the Mansion House, the ancient 14th Century Parish Church of Cockington enjoying a little welcome sunshine with one of the many magnolia trees in full bloom in the foreground. Ancient Bridge Cottage in the delightful old world village of Buckland-in-the-Moor in Devon’s Dartmoor National Park after a recent complete no expense spared refurbishment, including a new thatched roof sits in a beautiful natural woodland garden. I am sure many the romantics amongst us have dreams of living in a character filled chocolate box cottage like this, I know I certainly would. Originally uploaded in March ‘08, this was a capture of the storm that hit SW England that same month. / This was taken from the bridge at Dawlish Railway Station, Devon, England. / Despite the rough weather, the trains continued to run, and this stretch of track is the most expensive to maintain, due to the battering it gets from the sea. / This is a common sight in Dawlish during the winter months, and sometimes during the Summer months also. This picture was originally tonemapped by Dave Warren and I have revamped it a little bit to give it a slightly different look. Thanks again to Dave for his help with this. Thank you for looking. / Hope you like it. Best Viewed Large. Pentax K110D. / Pentax 18-55mm lens.
