  • Macabre...Know What it is?

Main Entry: ma·ca·bre / Pronunciation: (m-käbr, m-käb, -käbr) / Function: adjective / Etymology: French, from (danse) macabre dance of death, from Middle French (danse de) Macabré / 1 : having death as a subject : comprising or including a personalized representation of death / 2 : dwelling on the gruesome / 3 : tending to produce horror in a beholder / synonym see GHASTLY Any horror fans here? Yea…me neither? But, I do have a fondness for darkside images. Why? I don’t know. I have an entire list of dark image ideas I’ve jotted down over the last year. They just pop into my head. Why do I bring it up? Because it’s still photography. Unlike nature, structures, wildlife etc, the horror and macabre field takes some planning. I think that’s why I find them so rewarding. You have to envision a final image and make it happen, from start to finish. There are almost always going to be some type of props involved to portray the visual aspect of horror. But not always I guess? Why all this babble? Because like I said, I’m a fan of the photography side. So I’ve a few images to post that touch on the subject. I’ll mark each one as being sensitive (or whatever the check box is for adult content). But that may not stop you from seeing them. So…if you don’t to care to see some possibly disturbing images, you may not want to watch me anymore. The images will be tagged with the words this journal are tagged with. I’m not trying to chase anyone away, I just want everyone to know that it’s not all about HDR, humor and happy faces with me. Thanks for looking, reading and responding to all I’ve had to offer so far. If I get a big “we don’t want to see it” response, maybe I’ll hold off? We’ll see….

I’m going down yonder, behind the sun / I’m gonna do something for you, that ain’t never been done / I’m gonna hold back the lightning, with the palm of my hand / Shake hands with the devil, make him crawl in the sand What do you reach for to coax words out of your fingertips? I pour the whiskey, burn honey incense, and put these astounding voices on my stereo. The theme for the July Melbourne writers’ meeting is music, and I’ve been exploring my collection… just thought I’d share. Koko Taylor – listen to her growl “I’m a Woman” and see if you don’t feel the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. Big Mama Thornton Astounding. Etta James Still singing the blues to this day. The blues rule my world, but if you’re after something to dance to? Betty Davis The sassiest, wildest woman in funk – muse to Miles Davis – wearer of the sexiest hot pants in musical history. Ike & Tina Turner Come on, you can’t tell me you don’t know the moves to this one! And watch that woman shake…. Something more contemporary? Supersuckers Mmmmmm, gray-haired cowboys…..my favourite Nashville Pussy One of the best live bands I’ve ever seen – complete with a six foot two blonde fire-breathing Amazonian bass player. Lunachicks / Five fabulous tattooed punk goddesses….I was once asked to leave a Women’s Studies tute at uni for writing an essay holding up the bass player as my ideal of femininity My not so secret shame Because it’s my damn journal, and I’ll add it if I want! Honourable mentions: Mahalia Jackson (gospel queen), Odetta (stunning voice), Dallas Frasca (contemporary blues renegade), Reverend Horton Heat (rockabilly) and Nina Hagen (German punk/opera/jill of all trades) & as always, the immaculate Nick Cave. So what’s the soundtrack to your creative process?

Hi everyone! / I have just created a 2008 Calendar, featuring images from Tasmania! A perfect gift idea for those that love everything about the Apple Isle! 10% of all sales will also be donated to the Tasmanian Devil Appeal. As you may or may not be aware, on Thursday 22nd November 2007 the status of the Tasmanian Devil was lifted from Vulnerable to Endangered. We need to help support the research into beating the cause of their status change; Devil Facial Tumour Disease. So please, if you wish to help out a wonderful appeal and purchase a piece of Tasmania (via the photographic medium, of course!) send me either an email or a Bubblemail (if you are a RedBubble member) and I will get an order happening for you! Cheers Kel / xx P.S The price is $30.00 per calendar! / / / /

(Disclaimer: these ideas are not necessarily reflective of personal opinion) / I HAVE TO ADD THIS TO EVERY JOURNAL I POST FROM NOW ON, PLEASE NOTE IT. Sometimes I like to raise topics for discussion and elaboration, like radio talk-back! For some reason some people seem to think i am stating my own opinions (please read my wording more than once if you feel angry at me and before getting tense in your response… please, I am getting better too at developing this style here.) If you state your perspective from the most extreme angle it encourages further participation and thought because it invokes the more extreme emotional responses, just a bit on psyche… hee he It’s what all those right wing talk back hosts do (just some of them believe it as well… tch tch)... So please, try to separate the topics I raise from me… I feel that some people might like to bite, which is fine, but bite into the topic not my thigh… please… I am pretty thick skinned but I also believe that concerning topics should be open for discussion even if they leave a bad taste if your mouth… This little community is a society, how can we manage it so this can happen? Should I stop asking for opinion publicly about topics I am airing? Chances are I won’t, RedBubble needs independent media… But tell me your thoughts and opinions without making it personal please. YOU HAVE THE CHOICE OF NOT RESPONDING, YOU DON’T HAVE TO READ MY JOURNAL EITHER… BUT I AM GLAD THAT YOU DO AND I VALUE YOUR OPINION…

  • This Sunday 7 September marks National Threatened Species Day in Australia so I hope you can all take some time to reflect on what we have done in the past to contribute to the loss of our fauna and flora, but more importantly, what we might be doing now. Tiger Bot has been a runaway (no pun intended) success for me. Obviously I am very happy that people like the design and can relate to it, but I can’t help but be a little bit sad that one of the reasons we are fascinated by this creature is because we haven’t seen one since 1936. Unfortunately Tasmania is fast becoming the ‘poster’ state for threatened species – you only have to look at the current crisis surrounding Devil Facial Tumour Disease to realise that extinction is not something that only occurred years ago, but is a very real and present threat. Some links if people are interested: National Threatened Species Day Save the Tasmanian Devil

  • GOOD FOOD ON ROUTE 66!
    by Patricia Montgomery

MCLEAN, TEXAS The sun was dropping on d…

MCLEAN, TEXAS The sun was dropping on down when we arrived at McLean. In the downtown area, the road split into one-way east and west bound segments, divided by a city block. Although closed for the day, we saw a dual museum called “Texas Route 66 Museum / Devil’s Rope Museum” The term “Devil’s Rope” referred to barbed wire as there were two gigantic balls of barbed wire perched on concrete columns. Where else but on Route 66 would you find a tribute to barbed wire? It is a wonderful country we live in! A great photo opportunity was the tiny cottage-style Phillips 66 gas station all decked out in fresh tan and orange paint. The sign on the street corner indicated the station was originally built in the 1920’s and was the first Phillips 66 station in Texas. An antique Ford tanker truck was parked to the side, also painted a bright orange with the Phillip 66 emblem on the door. The gas pump showed a price of 19 cents per gallon! As we drove west through McLean on Route 66, there was the smell of something delicious cooking! We followed our noses to the Red River Steakhouse. Once there our stomachs began to do the Route 66 rumble… We were greeted at the door by a very friendly hostess who had the same southern accent as we did. For a tiny town like McLean, the parking lot was packed when we arrived. A full parking lot at a local restaurant is always a good sign. We were late-comers for supper and people began leaving while we were eating. Everyone knew everyone else as there were shouts of goodbye from across the room and farewells that included “be careful driving home”. It was obvious that this was a very friendly ranch community on Route 66. As my daddy used to say, we must have “popped out like a sore thumb” as visitors because the waitress immediately wanted to know where we were from and the hostess later brought out the guestbook so we could sign it. A big ole salad was served first, heaped high with crisp, cold lettuce and lots of fixin’s. Then our 8 oz. steaks were placed before us, completely covering a large platter. The steak was so big that it was nudging the baked potato out of the way! Both were tender and cooked to perfection. The complimentary dessert of homemade peach cobbler was delicious. For $1 more, we added a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. If you are anywhere near McLean near supper time, don’t miss the Red River Steakhouse.

This morning, I received my “Devil Woman” card by Disenchanted. Holy freakin’ hell, the quality is awesome!! Besides the fact the photo itself is fantastic, I can’t get over the superb quality of this card. In fact, I think it’s better than the cards we buy at the newsagents! I am so happy with my purchase! Although on the flip side, I think a previous order of mine has gone missing. Was informed it had been sent Aug 30th, and it still has not arrived. Whereas the one I received this morning was posted Wed Sept 12th and arrived today – pretty good for Melbourne to North Qld. I’ve contacted redbubble about the missing order so I’ll just have to see what happens. But anyway, for any newbie who has hesitated in ordering something from redbubble due to worries over whether it’ll be any good – don’t hesitate any more! buy buy buy! I was knocked out by the quality of this card!!

  • The Day I Met Saint Peter

My stepfather, Vance, struggled through the front door, his muscles taught, from a long day at the auto-shop. He walked by glaring at me, piercing my every fiber with contempt and hatred. He was jealous of what I had, he was jealous of the love that I stole away from him. He slowly sauntered through the living room, toward the kitchen eager to taste the meal my mother had prepared for him. The dinner bell rang, my mother took great pride in her cooking, she seemed so at ease while cooking, especially for him. The three of us had been seated, ready to eat, when my sister skipped into the room in such a manner that is normally seen only in a disney movie. She truly appeared to be on cloud nine, for what reason might never be know because it rarely happened and when it did was often short lived. As she entered the kitchen she opened her eyes and noticed that Vance had already returned from work and abruptly fell into a militaristic stride. She did this in fear that her happiness might anger him. He hated us because the love that our mom gave us took away from the love she gave him, or at least that was what he believed. Vance is an bitter and jealous man that wants even what he cannot have. Our mother accepted this flaw of his because of reason unknown. And for this my sister and I hated him with such a passion it could strike a fear in even the devils eyes. But we feared him even more. This fear could be seen in our faces, not in our expressions, we wore our suffering in our skin, we bared the scars of his jealous rage and suffered for a love that shouldn’t be. I swore to my self that night with great fortitude that I would end our suffering. Dinner time had passed and Vance began his nightly ritual of drowning his soul in liquor. He always pounded down the whiskey as if it was only water. He pounded down glass after glass until he was ready to pound down on my sister and I. This time was different because before he started working over me he started with my mom. He only hit her when he really had a bad day, usually I was his main punching bag. It was then that I was overcome with a feeling that I had never felt before. I flung myself at him with a courage from deep inside. I tried to stop his fists from barreling down upon my moms face but i was only six. As I was flailing my arms in the air he turned and struck me with a force I had never felt before. Every thing went black. I couldn’t open my eyes, they were sore and even the blackness was fading from all around me. What was happening to me? Was he still punishing me? That was when I awoke and met Saint Peter.

Hello fellow-redbubblers. / So I’ve decided that until midterms are done (Friday, February, Fifteenth!!!) I can’t start my new story. My character is now just chilling in the back of my head sitting, and probably reading some archived Archie Comics (which yes, when I was younger, I had TONNES!!!) until I can just sit and start creating their world. I’m still looking around for inspiration, but don’t worry, Ottawa is full of weird people and things to write about. I mean, it IS the site of Canada’s parliament, and everyone knows how scary politics can be. ps. Clinton ‘08!!! sweet dreams / jastoffer
