Scarification is a means of permanently marking the skin by cutting alone, without the use of pigments. The scars may be lighter or darker than your original skin tone and may raise up (keloid scarring). There are many ways to produce a scar but the cut must always penetrate the dermis if a scar is to be produced. The result depends as much on your skin as the method used. Black skin in particular is very good at producing pronounced keloid scars and this is a popular alternative to tattooing for people with very dark skin, for whom a tattoo might not show up very well. In many parts of Africa these scars are marks of beauty and a way to identify someone belonging to a particular group. Scarification also may mark one’s status as a civilized being, adult, or member of a specific ethnic group or initiation association. I spend a day in his school in a remote village of Benin to work on the Art in All of Us activities (www.artinallofus.org). I had really a great time thanks to the kids creativity. The eyes say it all here. Cambodians are beautiful, courageous people. With the older generations wiped out, the young have had to assume the responsibility of ‘elders’. This was taken in 1964 in the East End of London. This was before Playstations, and probably the only ‘toy’ these kids shared between them was a skipping rope. Old bomb sites still held a fascination though as a form of amusement and exploration, as can be seen here. It was taken using a Yashica Mat 120 film twin lens reflex camera that took me six months to save up for. I used Tri-X B/W film and printed on a hard grade of paper to get the punchy contrast, a characteristic of all my early B/W work. This image was photographed digitally from the original print in my portfolio.

As I enjoyed my cappocino and fiddled with my Bronica Zenza 6×6 (80mm f2.8) camera, I noticed this interesting character. The man sat there almost motionless. I motioned to him if it was ok for me to take the photo and he seemed to agree. I had to guess the exposure as I didn’t have my light metre out of my bag. The exposure came out fine (F2.8, 1/60th) and the focus is not bad considering the medium format and how clumsy the camera is in street photography. I processed the negative myself and scanned the image in on a Nikon film scanner. I have left the edge of the negative as it frames the image well and it appeals to my purist tendacies. This is one of my fravorite examples of my documentary work, it makes me think of how times have changed and how society changes and some people feel they can’t keep up.

This piece was constructed with many layers of different papers, illustration boards and original stencils. Acrylic paint is used around and within the figure. The predominant fetal figure was produced with newspapers, and was also drawn over with many layers of interesting atomic and geometric designs with marker and inks. It was created in 2006. /

I took this of the Amalfi Coast in Italy in 1999 on 35mm film. I then had the black & white film processed in colour. Photoshop has allowed me to play further. I love the romance of it.
