  • Scarification in Africa
    by Anthony Asael

    US$6.65–US$152.00

Scarification is a means of permanently marking the skin by cutting alone, without the use of pigments. The scars may be lighter or darker than your original skin tone and may raise up (keloid scarring). There are many ways to produce a scar but the cut must always penetrate the dermis if a scar is to be produced. The result depends as much on your skin as the method used. Black skin in particular is very good at producing pronounced keloid scars and this is a popular alternative to tattooing for people with very dark skin, for whom a tattoo might not show up very well. In many parts of Africa these scars are marks of beauty and a way to identify someone belonging to a particular group. Scarification also may mark one’s status as a civilized being, adult, or member of a specific ethnic group or initiation association. I spend a day in his school in a remote village of Benin to work on the Art in All of Us activities (www.artinallofus.org). I had really a great time thanks to the kids creativity. Please see some of their works on Benin Gallery ! hope you enjoy !! All proceeds from sales of pictures will go to the art education project of Art in All of Us (WWW.ARTINALLOFUS.ORG)

  • East End Kids
    by John Hooton

    US$3.99–US$91.20

One of the first street shots I ever took back in 1964 in the East End of London. This was before Playstations, and probably the only ‘toy’ these kids shared between them was a skipping rope. Old bomb sites still held a fascination though as a form of amusement and exploration, as can be seen here. It was taken using a Yashica Mat 120 film twin lens reflex camera that took me six months to save up for. I used Tri-X B/W film and printed on a hard grade of paper to get the punchy contrast, a characteristic of all my early B/W work. This image was photographed digitally from the original print in my portfolio. © 1964 John Hooton Photography

  • Life's Gambles
    by Cilliers

    US$5.65–US$129.20

A mixed media on canvas that unfolded over a period of 12 months and recently came together as this, rather unusual piece of work that incorporates a variety of mediums including collage, acrylic, gesso, sand, inks and guache… pretty much anything that I wanted. I guess the theme remained one of experimentation and my attitude stayed playful and open to where the painting wanted to lead me. Most of my work, particularly my abstracts, are intuitive, there is no prior thought process or decision on what I want to create and I let the work take me on a path rather than me moulding it from the early stages. Perhaps this is why this painting unfolded as a game, and on a slightly more deeper level, is about the games we play and the gambles we take in our lives. Please follow me ... oh, and one last point of interest. Some of you have already commented or favourited the previous versions of this painting, guess it goes to show how much our work can change in a short space of time. Pretty exciting to watch this journey as I enter my 3rd year of painting. Have a happy day and thanks for looking : ) LARGE SCALE VIEWING IS RECOMMENDED

  • Tutorial: Layer Masks and Transparency Gradients for "The Heart"
    by Cain Doherty

I have an improved and better formatted version of this tutorial in my wordpress blog....

I have an improved and better formatted version of this tutorial in my wordpress blog. This tutorial will cover digital blending in Photoshop CS3 using layer masks and transparency gradients. It is aimed at those who are interested in seeking alternatives to HDR (High Dynamic Range) processing. I would consider the usage of these techniques as digital graduated neutral density filters and although it can take some time to implement, I find the benefits to be: Preservation of intended colour and tone Complete control over contrast gradients Elimination of halo effects Elimination of fringing I will use one of my photographs, The Heart, to illustrate the method. 1. Download this zipped folder containing the two images to be used for blending and open IMG_1166 in Photoshop. 2. Press Ctrl+Shift+N and click OK to add a new layer. To place IMG_1164 on this layer go to File > Place and find where you saved it. Click the tick to commit the transform. 3. To create a mask, click the New Layer Mask (grey square with white circle inside) button in the Layers palette. To create a transparency gradient on this mask, first hit G to bring up the gradient toolbar and select a linear gradient. Then click and drag as shown in the following picture. 4. The next layer will be a photo filter so click Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Photo Filter and hit OK. Push the density slider to 100% and select a custom colour with properties as shown in the following picture. 5. Now apply another layer mask and gradient, as done previously, to restrict the photo filter to the sky. Change the blend mode to Linear Burn and opacity to 70% for the following picture. The Linear Burn blend mode is similar to Color Burn, but instead of increasing contrast, it decreases brightness to darken the base color and reflect the blend color. Now add curves layers to the foreground and then the sky. 6. Click Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves and hit OK. Then modify each of the RGB channels to reflect something like the following picture. 7. Change the blend mode to soft light and add a layer mask and gradient (this time in reverse) to restrict the curves layer to the foreground. This will produce the following result. The curves layer that targets the sky looks like this. 8. Change the blend mode again to soft light, opacity to 75% and create a layer mask and gradient to achieve the following result. 9. The final step involves adding a levels layer and changing its blend mode to ‘screen’ to boost the lighter areas. An opacity of 90% will achieve the picture shown below. 10. Straightening the horizon and correcting the barrel distortion yields The Heart. If you’ve found this useful please let me know. Feedback and discussion is welcome. If you haven’t done so already, please check out one of my other tutorials Photographing the Milky Way with a standard DSLR camera Cain Doherty

You are being blessed with the right amount of energy to stimulate the creative process in your life at this time. Think about your current projects and ask yourself what practical steps you need to take to facilitate or even enhance their development. Do you have a vision of what you wish to create in your life? Are you collecting together the raw materials that will make your vision a reality? Are you fashioning those raw materials into their desired shape? Is it time to breath life into your creations and allow them to live and grow on their own merits? 21 September 2008 / / Dedicated to JoBaby13 – painted with My Spirit Guides – With healing thoughts and love from the Sparrows. • Etched Lines of Sorrow
    by Julie Marks

    US$4.66–US$106.40

This photograph of a grandmother and her two grandchildren reflect / the pain, struggle, unbearable hardship and grieving that characterize / most elders in African villages. Although, I traveled to Africa about twenty-five years ago, the burden on women through the generations / were etched in the many lines of their face reflecting a lifetime of sorrow and loss. Looking at these photos has evoked memories of / beautiful children with hopeful faces that faded over the years as a / consequence of emotional and physical burdens too heavy to carry / for any sentient soul. In a continent of 900 million people, women / account for half of the world’s population and half of its talent. The costs of not developing this talent are enormous. The inclusion of women in the male dominated African economy is essential for nations to embrace the global economy while achieving shared growth at home. / A group, 10,000 Women invest in education for women and believe / their actions may have the highest social and economic return / of any investment, when one considers the range of income and health / outcomes for such women and their families. Investing in girls’ / education leads to increased wages for individuals as well as faster / economic growth for a country. The organization pairs volunteer / sponsors to train women to read, write and learn tasks that can / generate income for their villages and families. The poor and / hopeless female villagers feel empowered and hopefully will not / suffer the despair reflected on the face of the elderly woman in / this photo who is responsible for the care of her grandchildren after their mother died of Malaria, one of the diseases that rob children of the care of their maternal and often paternal parent. In this case, the father worked to feed the family, but his efforts were inadequate given the resources he had to sustain their lives. He did not have enough / money to send his children to school, a scenario too often seen in Africa that creates the vicious cycle or poverty and death. Getta Rao Gupta, President of the International Center for Research / on Women, states that “We know that primary and secondary education for girls is crucial to their ability to shape the course of their lives. But for girls to succeed, the skills they gain in school must match the jobs available in today’s global marketplace. Yet That critical space – when girls transition from school to work – has been invisible to the financial and international development communities… alike and investments to ensure a smooth transition have been limited. More than survive, we want women to thrive.” Melanne Vereer Co-founder and Chair for Vital Voices Global / Partnership reinforces Gupta’s message when she says, “Around the world women leaders are increasingly driving economic, political and social progress. They are the catalysts of change of our time. We know from a growing body of research—from the World Bank to the World Economic Forum—that investments in women’s education and training pay significant dividends for society. Without women’s full participation, no country can prosper, but in order to tap their potential, women need the tools for effective leadership. There is no better investment for our world.” Reading many stories of women whose lives have changed dramatically / with the help of advocates to train them is a very positive step when / the problems facing African families seem to be / too overwhelming to surmount.

Redbubble represents itself as an art community and to my mind forums play an integral part on forging community interaction. So we have been having a good look at our forums and tossing around some ideas on how we can get them to work a little better for a wider audience. This is where our thinking is at right now… We’d like to create a few more areas for like minded people to be able to congregate and connect with each other within the forums. The kind of structure we are looking at is to have a few main forum categories, which will then hold a number of sub forums. For example: Welcome Forum: Subforums would include a range of ideas to help our new forum members become more involved with the community beyond just a “hello”. It’s All About the Art: Here is where people would gather to discuss art in all it’s many shapes and forms. Subforums in this category would be fairly flexible with more being able to be added if the community shows a dedicated interest. Hott Goss – Art in the news Freeform – General Art Discussion Through the Looking Glass – Photography Weave It – T-shirts Waxing Lyrical – Writing Paperworks – painting, drawing, printmaking, illustrations etc Pixellate – Digital art Redbubble Cafe: A place for general type discussions and chat with four subforums. The Lounge – a place to kick off your shoes, chill out and relax with other bubblers The Gamesroom – Feel like stretching your brain? Pit your wits against each other in the games room The Round Table – For those who enjoy deep and meaningful conversations, at the round table everybody has a voice. Pinboard – Grab a pin and post your announcement here Critique: We feel that it is important for our members to have a place where they can go to ask for constructive critique. How we would like to see this forum operate is that to be eligible to ask for critique, you would need to demonstrate a willingness to also offer critique. Even if it is simply a considered opinion, participation is what it’s all about – no matter what your skill level is. Advice Centre: This forum is for help with non Redbubble stuff like Photoshop and Equipment. Help Me Please? Tutorials Equipment Reviews Shopping advice The appearance of the forums is pretty crap, so we have asked Russ to work some of his magic to make it look a little more inviting. We are also looking to introduce a “report this post” function, which would be taken care of only by staff members rather than volunteers. So basically what we are looking at is a little plastic surgery for the forums. A nip here, a tuck there, a bit of liposuction to add some pleasing curves – not any big sweeping changes. Thoughts and feedback welcome. Rhana
