At the border to the former GDR… between West-Berlin and Brandenburg… In Berlin Spandau (Germany)...
A view from the vineyards of Burkheim into the Rhine valley. / If you look closely you can see the silhouette of Breisach hidden in the fog – the minster’s outline especially can be identified, even if you aren’t familiar with the town’s skyline. Berlin Style…
Unexpected til we came & saw it / Unbelievable as soon as seen / Hit the mark despite not aiming for it / Is’nt that how things have always been? Bertolt Brecht Seen at the Holocaust memorial, Berlin, on a rainy Friday morning… (This image is unprocessed in any way, apart from cropping, unlike the earlier upload entitled “Zu viel Farbe” which was colorized in Picasa)

“A Walk Through the Memorial” Berlin, October 2008 Top 10 in EUROPA IN BLACK & WHITE challenge
At the end of the winter, there was still some snow on the mountains around Oberammergau in Upper Bavaria. I liked the wispy clouds drifting off or over the mountain top and that bird of prey – on the right (just visible). This shot hangs enlarged and framed in the home of friends near here. Location: I captured these mountains on the walk along the river Ammer towards Ettal, just before the road turns off to the famous Linderhof Palace. Featured in Mountains Across the Globe Challenge Winner in Mountains Across the Globe / Nikon D200. Sigma 18-200mm.
Took this shot in Germany in the Neckartal near Heidelberg. There you’ll find the Margarethen-ravine which has some nice cascades. The sun was making some disco lights on this waterfall which looked really nice :-) regards, / Michael
Captured late on a wintry December afternoon. The frozen lake was bathed in golden sunlight through a veil of cloud. There are shiny chunks of ice lying on the lakes surface. The lakeside beer garden was open (really) at the nearby pub, where I sat wrapped up warmly, sipping hot chocolate, enjoying the beauty and wonderful calm atmosphere. Shame I didn’t notice the halo ring – see the kind of circular shadow around the sun – at the time or I would have tried to capture more. Location: Lake Staffel, taken in Uffing, Bavaria, Germany. / Nikon D200, Sigma 18-200mm. Featured in Gorgeous Germany and Collage and Landscape Photography Taken on the same lake on another wintry day when the lake was not frozen over: /
Potsdamer Platz (English: Potsdam Square) is an important public square and traffic intersection in the centre of Berlin, Germany, lying about one kilometre south of the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag (German Parliament Building), and close to the southeast corner of the Tiergarten park. It is named after the city of Potsdam, some 25 km to the south west, and marks the point where the old road from Potsdam passed through the city wall of Berlin at the Potsdam Gate. After developing within the space of little over a century from an intersection of rural thoroughfares into the most bustling traffic intersection in Europe, it was totally laid waste during World War II and then left desolate during the Cold War era when the Berlin Wall bisected its former location, but since the fall of the Wall it has risen again as a glittering new heart for the city and the most visible symbol of the new Berlin.
Out for a stroll in the countryside one late summer afternoon a couple of years ago this view over the next hill filled me with hope. Many months later I was contacted by a youth support group in Austria if they could use it in their campaign to encourage possible young drug-addicts to visit their refuge. It is now their marketing image on handouts and visiting cards. My hope it is that it may help guide some lost souls back onto the Road of Hope. “I am sailing, I am sailing, / Home again cross the sea. / I am sailing, stormy waters, / To be near you, to be free.” / Gavin Sutherland, 1972 Captured during a boat trip from Baabe on the German island Ruegen round the small island of Vilm. The light was dramatic at the beginning of October with clouds, sun and reflections but, believe it or not, no rain! There was so little natural colour in the scene that I felt b&w would fit well here. Location: Ruegen, Germany, Baltic Sea. / Nikon D200, Sigma 18-200mm. Post-pro CS4 and Nik Colorefex. I started humming my old favourite “Sailing”, written by Gavin Sutherland and performed originally by The Sutherland Brothers. Of course, made famous by Rod Stewart. From my series World from Above. I am always fascinated by patterns like this created by farmers when laying out their fields. This one is dedicated to my mother, who loves this view! Taken from a commercial plane shortly before landing at Munich airport. This is pretty typical of villages and countryside of this part of Lower Bavaria. Nikon D200, Sigma 18-200mm. Post-pro in CS2. The light was very special and intensive on that winter day I spent wandering around the moorings on Lake Staffel near the Artists’ town of Murnau. Most of the boats were already ashore as there was already a bit of ice and snow around. Nikon D200, Sigma 18-200mm, several tweaks in PS eg. tone, vibrance, etc. Similar scene is available in my Calendar Werdenfelser Lakes & Ponds, Bavaria (German text)
Late winter afternoon and the day was turning into night, the frost was returning, the stillness was descending. Might make a good Festive Card! It is very early but we’ve actually had the first few snow showers! It doesn’t look like this in Munich but it is lying higher up in the mountains. I took this with my first digicam on Boxing Day in 2003. I really liked those two solid trees and the contrast between the smooth man-made field and the humocky meadow divided by the fence. The whole area is well known for these humocky meadows (Buckelwiesen). The wavy ground developed in a complex process following the ice age and are conservatin areas, where the farmers are comitted to use certain traditional methods in order to preserve the natural balance areas. Over two hundred types of wild flower and plant grow on this alkaline soil. It was around -15°C but bright and sunny. Just right to get wrapped up well and go for a wintery walk. We walked from the village of Kruen over a picturesque a high plateau with views towards the highest German mountain, the Zugspitze, / and the Karwendl range. Stopped off for hot chocolate and cake on the sunny terrace of a café overlooking the beautiful town of Mittenwald. Location: High Road (Höhenweg) between Kruen and Mittenwald, Upper Bavaria, Germany. Nikon Coolpix 855, 14.2 mm, 1/159s, f10, ISO 100. Featured in Seasonal Scapes

One of my favourite places that I discovered that day on a trip down to the Bavarian Alps. The weather and light were just light and I had to try for a few shots. They turned out darker than I’d planned so there is a wee bit of post-pro here but the scene is how I remember it. Got stuck in the snow and had trouble getting the car back on the road afterwards, but it was worth it. I am drawn back to this location whatever time of year, but this scene is special. Nikon D1X. Sigma 18-200mm. / Location: Near Leibersberg overlooking Lake Rieg, Upper Bavaria, Germany.
