While considering photographic destinations I decided that I should put my ideas on paper, both for my own use and also for friends that may want to join me on one or more of these excursions. I’m happy to work alone, but sometimes it is nice to have someone to share fuel expenses and/or driving, or just to provide company on long drives. So here are a few places I want to visit or revisit in the not too distant future… The Otways. There are so many fantastic photographic opportunities here! I have been many times but I don’t think I will ever get sick of photographing in this area. / (Could be either day trips or weekend trips from my base at Werribee) Lake Elizabeth near Forrest – day trip perhaps (but very early start preferred) Queenscliff/Point Lonsdale Sunrise – day trip with very early start. Mungo – Long weekend needed for this one Tasmania anywhere. I have done Cradle Mountain in a weekend and would be happy to do it again, particularly when there is snow on the mountain. Great Ocean Road Generally – day trips or weekend trips. The Grampians – weekend trip at least. Tarra-Bulga National Park, South Gippsland – Either a weekend or a very full day trip. Trestle Bridge Colquhoun State Forest – Weekend trip (inspired by Joe Mortelliti) Mt. Buffalo snowgums – Weekend (Hmm, are there snowgums at Lake Mountain?) / Actually I just checked and there is currently no accomodation on Mt. Buffalo, so it would be a weekend trip to say Myrtleford and a day trip in to Buffalo from there. This is just a start, no doubt many more destinations will be added. Feel free to make any recommendations of spots within striking distance of Werribee (Melbourne). Also anyone looking for a companion for a particular trip, I’d be happy to hear about it. / Also local and/or city excursions with a purpose. Regretably a day job means I am only able to get away on weekends, public holidays or evenings.

  • Great Places to Visit in Victoria.
    by Pip Gerard

I wrote this in the forum of the Melbourne Victoria group...

I wrote this in the forum of the Melbourne Victoria group and thought I’d add it as a journal entry in case it interests anyone else: Places to visit in Victoria. My parents were from Sydney… and moved down here before I was born. Because of this fact I grew up seeing so many incredible Victorian sites that I don’t think I would have seen if they’d not moved here from Sydney. Of course.. .now they’re loud and proud Victorianites. I have the most incredible memories of childhood and all the truly wonderful places we went to. Here’s a list of my most favourite memories (the places we’d been to many many times) that I love to reminice about often (I plan to take my son to all these places… in fact we’ve already been to many): - William Ricketts Sanctuary (this is my top choice of places to send visitors especially overseas ones!! If you’re a Victorian and an artist…. you simply must see this place!!!) Brochure - Puffing Billy and Emerald Park (was there just last week!) http://www.puffingbilly.com.au/ - The Dandenongs (when I was about 11 or 12 I seriously wanted to grow up to live in the Dandenongs!! I adored the place. The Black Spur especially!) http://www.bluedandenongs.com.au/sites/dr_alliance/content/pbr/drapbr21.html - Hanging Rock (went there first time when I was quite young after watching the movie… I was scared out of my mind… I LOVED IT!!!) http://www.hangingrock.info - Fairy Land – The Myer Windows ten fold built by one German man and his family!! (went there countless times growing up. We’d catch the Sorrento Fairy to Queenscliff and then drive from there… As a child this place was magical!! Took my son there last year and he had the most wonderful day!) http://www.fairypark.com/ - London Bridge Blairgowrie (looks small in the photo – great to climb and take photos) http://www.virtualsorrento.com.au/parks_walks/farnsworth_track/Slide4.htm - Old Melbourne Gaol (another that scared the bejeebies out of me as a kid… LOVED IT). I’ve become a big Kelly fan the more I know about them so this place is very special to me. Have been to Glenrowen too where they have this cute and enjoyable little show on that re-enacts the Kelly Gang showdown (looks like it’s been upgraded alot since – KELLY LAND)... both very worthy visits… especially if a Ned fan. http://www.oldmelbournegaol.com.au/ / Glenrowan I could go on and on. If anyone’s interested I”d be happy to list more Victorian treasures that I’ve experienced. I LOVE VICTORIA AND MELBOURNE!!!! For ever and ever :D Pip

I thought I’d jot down a few details of what I do during a typical wedding day. I usually arrive whenever and wherever the bride and her bridesmaids are getting ready. Not only does this yield some wonderful images, it also allows the bride to get used to me and, I hope, render me ‘invisible’ for the rest of the day…so I can get those great expressions in both the candids and the portraits. My focus is on the candid shots, but of course I also spend as much time as the couple feels patient with for all the traditional portraits. My day continues throughout the ceremony and the reception, ending only after the last dance has been danced and folks are headed out the door (or just sitting around in small groups, talking and visiting). The number of images I take during a typical wedding varies, but it’s usually around 1200 or so. I pare this number down to 400 or so ‘keepers’ which become the possession of the bride and groom. The only images I don’t keep, since everyone always asks, are the ones nobody would want: multiple exposures of the same shot (bracketed with different light readings); shots where someone’s eyes are closed or are looking at another camera; shots where a guest’s flash has fired, blowing out my shot; etc. Every image a couple receives has been personally worked on by me in Photoshop. I’m not saying I do a lot of work on each one (most are very good right out of the camera), but I do like to look at each one and apply a little sharpening here, a little color saturation there, etc. I do occasionally tweak some images that I think would look good with a little ‘extra’ something. That is, sometimes I’ll convert the entire image to black and white but leave the flowers, or the champagne, in color. Other times I might add a Gaussian blur to parts of the image but leave the subject in clearer focus. Whenever I do this, I also keep the original image intact, so the couple can choose which one (or both) they like best. It takes about two weeks for me to finish a wedding and post the images on the web. I use Shutterfly for my clients; they are given a password-protected site where they can view all their images, view a slideshow, order prints, etc. / I also work with an Italian company for my high-end albums; these range in size and price. I’ve had couples call me a year after their wedding, wanting to do an album, and that’s no problem. I generally shoot between 20-30 weddings a year and have traveled as far away as Hong Kong. I have one in Cyprus this spring, for the president’s granddaughter!

For several decades, the word Vietnam has been mentioned with a word “War” added up to. But ever since the beginning of the 90s, when the country embarked on a quest for wealth, it opened up and has been viewed and mentioned differently. Vienam is now no longer a war, but beautiful mountains and peaceful green vallies, colorful hill tribes and rich cultures dating back to thousand of years, pristine and remote beaches. This country is still very much remains undiscovered by tourists. Here are some suggestions that you can add up to your itinerary when travelling to the region. North of Vietnam This is the cradle of the Vietnamese culture, originated from the dawn of Vietnamese history. The region has a variety of natural terrain, distinctive local cultures shown up in traditional villages, thousand of ancient temples and pagodas aromatic with burning incense…What North of Vietnam is famous for are: Handicraft villages and villages in general, mountain and plain scenery. Thus, your place of visit should be: 1. Halong bay Located in the Gulf of Tonkin, this unrivaled bay has thousands of green karst formations jutting out of the sea. This is one of a must-to-visit place in North of Vietnam. Best to take a 2days/1night trip, which offers an overnight stay on a wooden boat. If you like to spend more time here, you can combine with a visit to Cat Ba island, a big one with inhabitants. This island is home to resorts, quiet beaches and a national park, which is good for hiking. 2. Tam Coc This is the name of a site where you can enjoy a ride on a little sampan boat (well, made of iron) for 2 hours rowing in the middle of rice paddies (if you come in the rice season). The highlight of the boat ride is the stunning view of the karst formations around. In summer time, Tam Coc should be toured in the morning than in the afternoon, to reduce the heat that you might have when you’re on the boat ride. 3. Handicraft or traditional villages Hanoi is surrounded by many old villages with distinguished characteristics or hav involved in a handicraft for hundreds of years. These are good for people who love to cycle or keen on cutural lives of the local. 4. Sapa Located 1.600m above sea-level. This is a small city on the mountain offering cool weather and a good center to visit local hill tribes around it. The scenery is totally sublime. The weather is cool most of the time. The place is good for trekking and sight-seeing to the hill tribes. Sapa is a must for mountain lovers. If you do like climbing, you should not miss mount Fanxipan – “the roof of Indochina” 5. North East and North West of Vietnam In general, these places are good for mountain lovers and cultural seekers. Visit some mountain cities, stay overnight in tribal groups, enjoy the scenery. This is best for those who love mountain motorbiking. A professional tour operator must be required. Since tours like these are different from classical ones. 6. Of course, North of Vietnam has Hanoi as the capital city. This 1000 years old city has a lot to see, especially to learn that it has lots of French buildings remain from the colonial time. Center of Vietnam This place used to be the meeting point of many cultures, since its sea once was home to some famous ports, where Japanese, Dutch, Chinese…vessels met and exchanged goods or stopped in the middle of their trade routes. This is where the last dynasty in Vietnam built up their royal structures which still remain till today. This is where you can be lazy on the most beautiful beaches in Vietnam (and some are among the World’s top). This is where the Central Highland, with lots of rudimentary tribal groups settle in. There are so much to be addicted to this place. The places of visit should be: 1. Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park This is an amazing complex of karst scenery with over 300 caves and grottoes, which hold some world cave records. This is where you have the mountains, forest, Vietnam’s longest underground river, fine sand beaches inside the caves, beautiful stalagmites and stalactites, waterfalls and so on. It’s 500 km South of Hanoi and can be accessed by train or car. This site was listed on the World Heritage Sites in 2003. Compare to the other world heritage sites in Vietnam, this is the least touristy. 2. Hue Imperial City This is heartland of Central Vietnam. Hue was the capital city of Vietnam from 1802-1945. Lots of the royal buildings can now be seen in Hue. The highlights among these are: The Imperial Citadel, the Kings’ tombs – final resting places of the last kings in Vietnam. Hue is a nice and calm city with friendly people. The city is bisected by the famous and scenic Perfume River and a cruise on the River would add up to your trip experience. Hue was the first place in Vietnam to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Sites, in 1993. 3. The Old Town of Hoi An This is the best place in Vietnam in term of a real “Old Town”. Hoi An used to be one of Asia most important trading ports in the period of 15th – 19th century. For that reason, the town’s architecture reflex a combination of local and foreign influence, with century-old houses. This laid-back town became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 and is now a main attraction of Centre Vietnam. The town is considered one of the best in Vietnam in term of tailored-made clothes with cheap price. 20-minute cycling out of the town will bring you to Cua Dai beach, with clear water, fine sand shaded by coconut trees. Once when you’re here, don’t forget the word “My Son Sanctuary”:http://www.paradissa.com/vietnam/vietnam-travel-guides/my-son_en.html/, where a story about the once-mighty empire would be told through the ruins of the ancient temples. 4. Central Highlands This is home to many tribal groups in Vietnam. Where you see elephants walking on the roads and loaded with cargos or tourists. This is also among the least developed places in the country with only 3 main cities bu once when you’re here, you’re be offered a lot of chances to go sightseeing to many scenic places and see many culturally rich people. This place seems to best suite those who loves motorcycles since lots of scenic places are not approachable by local bus. So, let’s get ride, the place has a lot for you to explore. 5. Nha Trang This coastal city offers some best beaches in Vietnam. The bay of Nha Trang is one of the World’s most beautiful ones. Recently, money has been poured into this place to build up luxurious resorts that cater to more the need of affluent people. The domestic travellers fancy the beach in the city, so you may consider enjoying your stay in a resort on an island away from the mass. Last but not least, this is the best place in Vietnam to do scuba diving. 6. Da Lat A city of the same elevation as Sapa, Da Lat was developed by the French from the needs of building up the city into a summer resort, an escape from the heat of Sai Gon. Thus, the architecture of the city reflexes the colonial one. Traveling from Sai Gon up north, you should drop by here for several days. The average temperature in this city is around 16 -18 degrees celcius all year round. It’s a romantic city with beautiful waterfalls and hilly scenery surrounds. But watch out, because everything is so romantic and poetic, you may regret later to have been here alone. South of Vietnam Unlike the North and the Center, the South of Vietnam is much younger than its two brothers in term of history. Nevertheless, it boots an unparalleled charm compare to other regions. This holds the most fertile land of the country, the biggest river system with distinguished everyday river lives. Moreover, everyone seems to have heard of the Vietnam War as much as they heard of Sai Gon, the biggest city of South Vietnam. Well, having to describe it all in one word, it would be alluring. 1. Ho Chi Minh city (formerly Sai Gon) The biggest city in South Vietnam, the most populated, the economic muscle of Vietnam. And that’s not everything. The city was the capital of Cocochina, thus it present a fine colonial architecture that you can see in the center of the city. Sai Gon was the brain of the South during the Vietnam War, and, hence, it is the most Americanized one. 2. Cu Chi tunnel system + Cao Dai Temple This was a famous name during the Vietnam War. It shows up how resistant the local was in the war. Come and witness a system of hundreds kms digging deep in the ground. It’s only 75 km from Sai Gon and this place should not be missed. Watch out before you make your decision of getting though the tunnels, you’re not gonna lose your way but it’s easy for you to get stuck. The trip can be combined with a visit to Cao Dai temple, a colorful one where the local practice their unique cult. 3. The Mekong Delta River The South of Vietnam is where the Mekong river system flows into the sea. And this makes a special part of Vietnam’s picture. A trip or several days will bring you on a row along the matrix system of canal fenced with fruitful coconut trees, and then be in the middle of the famous floating market where hundreds of vessels heavily loaded with fruits and vegetables meet and exchange. Get yourselves lost in the local orchard where you can be lazy sleeping on the hammock or taste fruits hanging lowly from the trees above. 4. Phu Quoc Island and Con Dao Archipelago The more touristy the country is turning, the more tourists seek privacy from their travel mates, of course, that doesn’t mean the new places are of any less beautiful. Phu Quoc and Con Dao are heavens for that purpose. These are both one hour fly from Sai Gon / , they offer ideal sunny quiet beaches, with fine sand, coconut trees. Lots of travellers have highly recommended these places to possess top beaches in the world. Phu Quoc is slightly more touristy than Con Dao. —-—-—-—-—-—— www.paradissa.com

  • Words to a great life

Taken and slightly modified, but I can’t remember from where!!! Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. If you intend to go too many directions at once, You end up going nowhere. It made me think about what I really truly own in my life. I have a computer, DVDs, pots, pans, clothes and all manner of things but do I really own them? Sure I bought them, but I can’t take them with me and they won’t last forever. They break, run out, or get lost. The more I grow to understand this the less attached to material things I become. The less I get upset when I loose them. Things, like people come into our lives for as long as they are needed and then move on. Sure it’s important to have a place to live, food to eat, books to read and clothes to wear but all these worldly things are transient. There is only one thing that will always be with me. There is only one thing that will always be mine… And that thing is Me. This one singular real possession is the most important thing I’ll ever have and it’s the only thing I will truly own. I have a responsibility to keep it and nurture it always. How much would I need to live? It’s an interesting question because everybody has a different answer. How much is enough? I have never been a consumer and I have never felt the need to collect possessions. I’ve never been one of those people who needs an Xbox, Playstation and a Wii. I own the cheapest Ipod and only 1 pair of sneakers. I have 2 pairs of jeans and 5 t-shirts. I buy my clothes from second hand stores and wear everything till it falls apart. So many people get caught up in the consumer culture that has been forced upon us by greedy corporations whose advertising’s sole purpose is to make us feel incomplete and ugly so that we spend money on useless things we hope will make us feel better. How much is enough? 2 men pull up at the traffic lights. One drives a Ferrari and has a huge house with a pool and tennis courts. He owns a boat and brand new golf clubs that have never been used, but he works late, has no kids and everything is bought on credit. The other drives an old station wagon with the kids in the back. He owns his modest house and his car and every Friday has a beer with his mates at the pub. Who is more successful? Some people would immediately come up with ” I need $1000 a week… I could live on that” but what about pleasure and food for your soul? How will you measure success when you look over your life? Will it be measured by how many cars and houses you own or will you measure it by how many people attend your funeral. Will you measure it by what you will leave behind or by what you took? No, I don’t need much to live but what I want is a modest car, my own roof, enough to eat and lots of friends. That would be a great start. Life is a journey with only one destination” P.S. Photography is a great treasure to leave behind for future generations. Keep up the great work my Redbubble friends Cheers Scott W Westlake

Received this from one of my favorite authors/mentors/teachers, Debbie Ford and thought I’d share them since she’s influenced and inspired growth, learning and empowerment for me for the past decade…ENJOY / It’s so easy to make promises about the year ahead. You will follow your diet, be more financially responsible, be kinder to your spouse, spend more time at the gym…But, for most, the promises you make today will be empty dreams six months from now. So let’s examine this. I would suggest this happens because real change doesn’t occur when you just want something or wish for another reality. Real change happens when you feel genuinely inspired, turned on by possibility and unwilling to settle for anything less. It happens when you commit with all of yourself to a new way of life, to a new future. So how do you do this? To feel inspired and lit up and to make room for optimism, enthusiasm, and lasting change, you must lighten your emotional load by addressing your past issues, your emotional blocks, your negative beliefs, your feelings of unworthiness and any infantile desires that drive you to repeatedly head off in a direction counter to your dreams. If you drop your commitments, it is not because you want to be seen as a quitter or a loser but because unconsciously you are more committed to an outdated self—an old identity that feels comfortable and safe even though it might have stopped serving you years ago. Often, psychological laziness will have you switch your life over to autopilot and fall asleep at the wheel rather than stay awake to what will fulfill your heart’s deepest desires and your soul’s purpose. On this eve of a new year, a very fertile time to look over your past and commit to a new future, you can ask these simple questions to unload some old baggage and steer your life in the direction of a brilliant and thrilling future—the ride of your life. 1. What are your deepest desires for this new year? 2. What are you willing to give up to get them? / What habits, limiting beliefs, unhealthy relationships or situations? 3. When did you become unwilling to do whatever it takes to have / what you want? 4. What cravings or unmet needs will drive you away from / your desired destination? 5. What structure of support will you need to ensure this new future? 6. Who could you count on to be your co-pilot to ensure that you / will neither fall short of the runway nor overshoot your desired outcome? / Who will help you stay awake? If you wish to fly to new heights, begin by setting your sights on a destination you can reach and then create a flight plan, a map that will be your guide. And if at any time you don’t feel like following your flight path, stop, take a deep breath, call forth your vision for your future, then pick up your phone, dial your co-pilot and ask them to remind you that veering off your route really isn’t worth the pain of repeating the past. Veering off will only leave you in the same repetitive pattern of wanting, wishing, fantasizing, and then feeling intensely disappointed when you land at a destination other than the phenomenal future that awaits you. So today, YOU have the power to choose the destination of your dreams, create a flight plan and stick to it. So gather your courage, your strength and your commitment and get onboard, making 2010 the most inspiring year of your life. / With love and blessings, / Debbie Ford (& TK) ♥
