  • What your favourite record cover?

I am embarking on a new creative venture of re-interpreting and redesigning record covers with different materials to give them a third dimension, dynamic colours and tangible textures using everything from leather to stitching to coloured ink. This is all in the the belief that record covers are truely amazing pieces of artwork in their images and to make them more tangible would be a wounderful thing. I have already finished Belle and Sebastian “Tigermilk” which will be uploaded soon am working on Pink Floyd and the Sex Pistols and my interpretation of The Velvet Underground and Nico “Andy Warhol” is in my portfolio. You could have hanging on your wall a slightly different interpretation of a record cover that has meant something to your life and that you really appreciate for its design and for the music, culture and time that it symbolises. So I’m putting it out there to you my creative friends (that would be you and you) what are your favourite record covers and why? and if you are interested in ordering a design feel free to let me know. Also any other ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and I hope you enjoy what is to come xx

  • On Competition and T-Shirt Designs

It is my belief that the t-shirt aspect of RedBubble has not yet reached its potential. What t-shirt designers must remember is that here they are competing with a superior aesthetic quality in wall art. The photography and visual art which produces wall art is of a far superior quality aesthetic value than t-shirt designs. High resolution prints can be easily achieved by said artists, while t-shirt designs will always be of a lesser quality because of the material they are printed onto. Thus, trying to make t-shirt designs compete with the wall-art side of RedBubble in aesthetic value is too daunting a task to be overly successful. A picture produced for aesthetic quality is one which draws-in viewers because they simply ‘look good’ to them. It is here that there is a severe disadvantage in aesthetically pleasing pictures – their message, if any, goes totally unnoticed. People looking at pictures want only to be pleased, and so the people producing pictures choose only to produce pictures to please. This appears to be the basis of the wall art side of RedBubble. This is also where t-shirt designs should be utilising a strong advantage. Humans, although wanting to be pleased by beauty, also have brains – therefore they also wish to think. It is this wish for thought that will, eventually, see t-shirt designs being able to compete on a level with wall art in RedBubble. T-shirt designs must appeal to the thought and intelligence of people – filling the gap left by wall art – and propose, above all, a message. This message is achieved by an alienation effect. The alienation effect is where a viewer is forced to be distant from the aesthetics of the design, and instead looks upon the message being presented – thus filling the aforementioned thought void. A t-shirt design must, therefore, not aim to be above all aesthetically pleasing, but to propose a message. Simple pictures and wording, with little minor detail, and still some rough-edges will force any viewer not to look at a t-shirt design for it’s beauty. However, if the aforementioned aspects of designing are used to propose a message, a viewer will think about said message. If the message is strong enough, then the t-shirt design will be popular. T-shirts have the advantage of being a revolutionary tool. Anyone wanting to get out a message will sooner sport a t-shirt with the message than put a print on their wall, because more people would see the t-shirt, and thus the message. While wall art is used for personal satisfaction, a t-shirt design may be used to communicate a whole chain of thought; to propagate a message. It is in this way that t-shirt designs will become more popular, as more people appreciate the message they get out, and thus more people will want to get out said messages. I so conclude that t-shirt designs must not aim to trump wall art for aesthetic value, but instead alienate a viewer in order to present a message or thought. If t-shirt designers are to produce designs to be popular on the level that wall art is, then they should follow the guide of this journal entry, and so create a specific culture of thought and intelligence to surround the t-shirts of RedBubble.

I had a little free time over the weekend and have been interested in experimenting with the RB tee shirt design. My first attempt was OK and received some positive feedback but my second attempt I am very happy with, it was one of those moments just like you see in the cartoons a light bulb came on over my head. I took the photograph entitled Barbed Tears and thought it was such a striking image that it could be used as the basis of an anti war symbol on a tee shirt. It took a few hours to translate it into the final design, I was unsure which one of two versions I had made and in the end put both up for sale. I am still buzzing about it and the only thing that could make the feeling better is to actually sell something!

Where are the designers? I was introduced to this site by a good friend of mine who is also a designer (and a photographer) and got really hooked… but I had forgotten the reason why I joined this website. DESIGNERS! Specifically Graphic Designers… All these days, I have looked through so much work and I hardly seem to find any designs. 95% of the work that I have seen is photography. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE looking at photos but I’d like to see some designers’ work. I originally came here to get inspired by other people like myself who are looking to work with others et al but I really haven’t found many. Let me also say what I really am. I am NOT a photographer! I have been a WEB DESIGNER since the time I found out what it was, erm.. at the age of 12 or something? I work as a professional web designer at a government run organisation Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and getting paid a lot more than people of my age. I got interested in Graphic Designs a couple of years ago and just got super obsessed with modernity and contemporary arts. I was into drawing and painting so I had done my basics at school and got a good grade but I was best at Computing so I pursued this as my major in college and I took a small course of Graphics alongside it. By the end of my first year, I got so fed up of computing that I totally didn’t want to do it any longer. This is where my Graphics came in. I was already designing for fun for years and years alongside my websites but this was when I started taking it all very seriously. I’m now in my last year of college (and getting ready to go to University, if you know the British system) and take this as my profession. I don’t know why I just rambled on about all my life LOL.. Anyway, so since I didn’t find many designers here, I thought that the main interest would be photography as I have mostly seen only the photographs… and as you can see from my work, I started uploading my lame photographs, which are getting appreciated but I didn’t want them to take away the attention that my graphics should be taking! So, RANT OVER!! If you guys know any good (or even bad) designers that I can look up? The photographs that I look at do not inspire me to do anything other than search through my hard drive for good photos that might gain some interest of others. PS: Posted as a forum topic but journals seem to be much more active! :-/

In case you’ve been living in an alternate dimension lately, the Powers-That-Be have launched an awesome t-shirt comp based around the theme This is London Calling. Having taken a digital-mosey through the current crop of entries, I have to say that the challenge is really pushing entrants to produce high-quality works. Here are a selection of my personal faves: I Live by the River: fixtape First black cab off the rank, and it’s a stunner. The combination of digital pattern work and hand-composed collage really shine. The inksplattered overlay and stark contrast within the silhouette add a nice Ralph Steadman vibe, further amplifying the clash of clean lines and punk. London Calling, You Have Been Disconnected: SBlundell Now this is beautiful stuff – the sense of depth generated by the clever use of the Union Jack and surrounding negative space combine with the central figure to lend a sense of calculated disconnect. There’s a definite ‘Bond’ vibe emanating from this piece, and it’s a bold artwork for it. Graff Britain: Mungo Simple, to-the-point and powerful. London 1940: Ross Robinson A haunting combination of images lending a real sense of the under-the-bomb London of WWII. This is only a small slice of the entries on offer, and far from exhaustive when it comes to those that have impressed me personally. If you haven’t already done so, I strongly urge you to take a look at the others on display, and vote when the polls open. This is going to be one hell of a contest. Good luck to all involved! -Simon

GOOD GOD.. / I allowed myself to see a documentery called “The Union: The Business Behind Getting High (2007)” and what a doozy.. It never ceases to amaze me how the stupidity of our far right thinking gets us. We spent more money on arresting and finding growers of marijuana and building jail after jail to house the arrest of these growers and distributors than we do on all the heroin, crack cocaine, meth labs ect all the hard drugs participants combine!! Did you know before 1930’s Hemp was forseen back then as a billion dollar industry!! BACK THEN.. billions of dollars is like now trillions..Holy Cow.. will we ever get out from under our own stupidity and become ENLIGHTENED!! Just for a minuet I find peace in my week and in the mood for allowing for all that is in the contrast of life… and the next I watch something that is sooooooooooo crazy and thought-provoking like the money being made in the building of private prisons.. oh my yikes…. then… WELL THANK GOD FOR Unconventional Artistry GROUP AND THE AMAZING HOSTS… / CHEYWINGS AND EARTHMONSTER / SENDING OUT WORD that I had been given the complete honor of being their featured artist this go round and an invitation to view my lastest work LIMBER TRULY .. I am so thankful sometimes for RB and these wonderful members.. I was just about to feel really angry and I don’t want to today.. / So thanks so much you guys!! I am smiling and in much appreication.. / btw.. this group rocks.. the art is OUT OF CONTROL SO GO CHECK IT OUT.. SO MANY GOOD ARTIST THIS WEEK!!! Unconventional Artistry / XOX

... especially when it’s taken a lot of your time and energy! I’m pretty stoked because the first run of copies for a book I designed, poisonous2pets has finally come in. What’s even cooler is that while this is the work of a self-published author, it’s already getting interest from the likes of Gardening Australia and ABC 774 down here in Melbourne, along with members of Vet and Nursery organisations around the country. I’m less than pretty at the best of times, and am just getting over a fortnight-long bout of god-knows-what, but what the hell, it’s a special occasion: For anyone out around Melbourne on Saturday 10 October, there’s going to be a launch for this and another self-published book entitled The White Dingo. As part of World Animal Week, donations from the sale of both books will be going to the WSPA and Dingo Discovery Centre, who will also be bringing some live dingoes in to press the flesh. I’m not going to be there, unfortunately, but it sounds like it’s going to be worth a look if you’re in the area. If you’re also interested in the self-publishing side of things, Paul and Debbie Higgs, the owners of Palmer Higgs will be there, so you could head over to pick their brains (or mine via bubblemail – always happy to help). Cheers / Si

Hi all! I’m only working two days now at the design agency working on photographic portraits (graphic designer) and I need more days than this. At the monent, I am not looking to leave my current employer as the work is fine, I just need more days work. Of course, if you have an offer for a 4 day per week job then I will at least hear you out! But yes, I am in need of Melbourne based design agency work, and as you may know me, I have professional experience in retouching, design, logos and more. I tend to lean towards graphic based work instead of retouching magazine pictures but I am flexible. My tshirt and artwork is on here, but if you want to know a bit more about me (with more of my logo, flyer based work) then please head to http://diesellaws.com If anyone could help out, or anyone can point me in the direction of good people to speak with please contact me (either privately or in the comments) Think about it people, I could become a real asset to your company! :D
