I ventured into full time employment from 1996 on a traineeship with Queensland Pride, a monthly community newspaper for three years, where i was involved in a large variety of departments within the newspaper. Family responsibilities and the need for wholesome lifestyle for my children, led the move to Melbourne in 2003. Though I have not been technically ‘employed’ since then, my freelance career projects and opportunities have increased dramatically, which included international opportunities and featured exposure in prominent publishings, which are all detailed in my resume. 2008 is the time where my children are young adults, and a time where I can give to myself, 100% commitment to my chosen career/employer in which I am able to utilize all the skills and knowledge I have acquired in the past as a solo parent of four and career person. • Art Criticism: How to Criticize a Work of Art
    by Trace Lowe

Art Criticism: How to Criticize a Work of Art / A four step process This is what I give my students as a guide to art appreciation: / ...

Art Criticism: How to Criticize a Work of Art / A four step process This is what I give my students as a guide to art appreciation: 1. Description- What do I see? Study the work in detail carefully. Describe the work in full detail. Be factual. Mention everything you see. 2. Analysis- How is the work organized? Look for and talk about the elements and principles of art and design that seems to dominate the work. Look at how the artist has used The Elements of Art / • Lines- real and implied, curved and straight, direction of movement / • Shapes, Space, Forms- Are the shapes geometric or free-form? Where is the horizon? Where is your point of view as the viewer? (Above, below, in the work, or outside) / • Colors- Warm, cool, bright, dull, soft, bold, etc. / • Value- light: reflecting much light; dark: absorbing much light. / • Texture-Both the medium and the objects portrayed: rough, smooth, shinny, dull Look at The Principles of Design / • Rhythm- Are there repeats of elements or images? / • Movement- Is there an illusion of action? How does the eye move around the work? / • Balance- Formal or Symmetrical, informal or asymmetrical / • Proportion- The size relationships between one part to the whole or one part to another part / • Variety- Visual difference and contrast within the work / • Emphasis- What part is dominant, and what part is subordinate? / • Unity- Does the work hold together? 3. Interpretation- What is happening? This is more than storytelling. As in literature, you need to interpret and generalize from data given. You need to find the metaphor or allegory in the work. What is the artist trying to communicate? Use your intelligence, imagination and courage to explain and tell the meaning of the work. This is based on the facts you have observed and your own life experiences. You can express your feelings, but they must be backed up by the observations you have made about the work. 4. Judgment- What do I think of the work? Does the work hold together visually? Does it communicate with the viewer? Judge whether the work succeeds or fails. You give your opinion backed by the three steps above. To make a judgment, you need to be honest with yourself. You need to know why you feel the way you do. Three Theories of Judging Art Imitationalism -Some people believe that art should imitate what we see in the real world. / Formalism – Some people believe that the most important part of a work is in the use of the principles of design and the elements of art. A work is successful if the texture, color, lines, etc are organized properly. / Emotionalism – Some people believe that the most important part of the work is the mood the artist communicates. Perhaps it is best to use all three theories when judging a work of art. Adapted from many sources, including Arttalk by Rosalind Ragans

I have entered a few tees on Threadless.com. This is the response I received on one of them so far… “Hello Don Brand, Regarding: ‘Why?’ Unfortunately, your submission was declined. The Threadless staff has provided the following reason to decline your submission: We want every design submitted to Threadless to have the best possible chance at being chosen for print. Your submission was declined because we feel your idea could use a little more work to be up to the standard that will give it the best shot. We have a feature called “Critique” on Threadless.com that allows you to have your design critiqued before you submit it for approval. By using the “Critique” feature as a pre-submission tool, you can let the community help get your submission up to par. We’re certain this will help you improve your design!” I find it interesting that they can determine what is finished or needs work, and what does not. I have looked at the things they have accepted, and the designs they sell, and I am not sure I agree with them. An awful lot of their stuff is the same lame stuff you see on every other site. Here is the design I submitted that received this response… / / Himey is as finished as he is going to get. It wasn’t supposed to be complicated, just a simple statement. I will try submitting a few more designs and see what happens. If any of you have submitted anything to Threadless, and have had it accepted, please post it on this thread, so we can see what they are apparently looking for. Thanks.

I want to take a second out of design time and uploading t-shirts to explain to YOU in the most simplest of ways how AMAZING Redbubble is. This post will hopefully inspire you to become involved in many ways within this amazing website. I’m going to try something a bit different and write the rest of this post about my day on redbubble, with a SLANG theme…just to show you that these are my thoughts and words and I mean them very much and also because it’s a lot of fun! - Redbubble = Sik. Like totally. I mean like you hop on the net, pop open the homepage and check out some awesome art and stuff. There’s pics of people wearing some shirts and holding some art, new IN-YOUR-FACE designs, GROUPS overloading with creativity and a cool COMMUNITY. That’s what keeps me here; the COMMUNITY I mean. Like, I upload a fresh design, slam on some links in the description and send it off to a few GROUPS. Then, after it’s all uploaded, I wander over to some fresh stuff, show my respects by dropping some comments and favouriting the work and if it’s totally mind blowing I may even add the artist to my WATCHLIST (coz you never know what cool designs will come next!). I pop back to MYBUBBLE every now and then to check out the progress of my latest design and WHAMMO! Usually I have at least one comment that I can enjoy and REPLY to; It’s all about the REPLY people! Most of the times the comments are awesome, even if they are only a sentence long, and they inspire me to keep smashing it up! If for some reason I don’t have a comment on my new piece (probably coz its only been 1 minute) I go and check out more cool new works on the BUB. When I find some more slamming pieces I send off a few BUBBLEMAILS directly to the artists letting them know how SIK I think their work is! Then I might read one of the latest BACKSTAGE posts from the main REDBUBBLE PEEPS behind the scenes and get totally inspired again to create some new stuff! So if creating art for a website inspires you to create more art – How could you not love it! With love, Diesel Laws Follow me on Redbubble and also: / WHY DO YOU LOVE REDBUBBLE? Go on, drop a comment >

... especially when it’s taken a lot of your time and energy! I’m pretty stoked because the first run of copies for a book I designed, poisonous2pets has finally come in. What’s even cooler is that while this is the work of a self-published author, it’s already getting interest from the likes of Gardening Australia and ABC 774 down here in Melbourne, along with members of Vet and Nursery organisations around the country. I’m less than pretty at the best of times, and am just getting over a fortnight-long bout of god-knows-what, but what the hell, it’s a special occasion: For anyone out around Melbourne on Saturday 10 October, there’s going to be a launch for this and another self-published book entitled The White Dingo. As part of World Animal Week, donations from the sale of both books will be going to the WSPA and Dingo Discovery Centre, who will also be bringing some live dingoes in to press the flesh. I’m not going to be there, unfortunately, but it sounds like it’s going to be worth a look if you’re in the area. If you’re also interested in the self-publishing side of things, Paul and Debbie Higgs, the owners of Palmer Higgs will be there, so you could head over to pick their brains (or mine via bubblemail – always happy to help). Cheers / Si
