  • Soon after the sun rises and the alpenglow fades, the lighting evens out and gives more natural daytime colors. The wind dies down and gives better reflections and the wildlife comes out to greet the new day. I saw a couple of deer while photographing that morning. They were wandering across the lakeside on the right. The fishermen started coming out in numbers around this time and made things a little tough on me since I was set up right near the marina and had to wait wile boats passed through my viewfinder every few minutes. In the end though, it was a beautiful summer morning that I wish I could experience everyday.

  • This image was captured on a quiet and peaceful summer morning on lovely Mt. Desert Island in Bar Harbor, Maine. The sun is seen rising over the Porcupine Islands, casting a glowing light on the wet rocks. All content & images © Stephen Vecchiotti. • Zion National Park in the high desert of Utah is divided by a long tunnel into two sections, east and west. This image was captured while day hiking through the scenic and diverse eastern end of the park. I stumbled upon this unique balanced rock in the middle of the landscape, which amazingly has stayed just as it did when it came to rest millions of years ago. Photographically it made for an interesting foreground in a very captivating and colorful area. All content & images © Stephen Vecchiotti. • Scenic Jordan Pond and the park landmark “The Bubbles”, captured at dawn in Acadia National Park, Maine. An example of water reflections that often can be captured in the stillness of dawn. • This shot was taken at the entrance to the walled courtyard of the Santuario de Chimayo, Village of Chimayo, New Mexico. Chimayo is located about 30 minutes drive north of Santa Fe.

  • Indigenous people occupied this site as early as the 9th century. At the time of Spanish exploration under Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, this site was home to one of the richest pueblos in the americas. For that reason, a Spanish mission was erected here in the early 17th century, only to be destroyed during the Pueblo Uprising / of 1680. The mission ruins are located at Pecos National Historic Park about 20 miles north of Santa Fe, New Mexico, near the village of Glorieta. In the foreground is the entrance to a kiva Although some were also built above ground, kivas typically are subterranean structures used for secret rituals and religious practices of native tribes inhabiting the southwestern portion of the U.S.. The practice of constructing kivas began with the ancient puebloans in the ninth century and continues to this day. Most intact kivas are under the control of native american tribes and photography is forbidden. Pentax K20D, 1/60 at F/20, 26mm.

  • This was a water park so full of life at one time . with kids and adults alike laughing and playing , running from one water ride after another screaming …catch me if you can…or … betting who will or won’t go down the biggest water slide in the park or running over to ride the waves in the wave pool ! / A small Oasis in the middle of the desert that you could go to in the summer and cool off from the hot West Texas sun and meet up with friends or spend the day with family . / This Water Wonderland is no more…... it has long ago fallen on hard times and sad disrepair , and left to wither away in the desert heat and blowing wind , an oasis no more! It now only lives on in our fondest memories of times passed! / Maybe one day someone will come along and breath new life into this oasis of the desert and create new and wonderful memories to cherish a life time as it once did for many others!! • A classic Australian scene, depicting a deserted and decaying old wood and tinned roof shack, with the harsh but beautiful Australian bush as a backdrop. The third image in this series. This wonderful old shack is just outside of Melbourne, in the Kangaroo Grounds/Christmas Hills area. I’ve put directions on my Flickr stream if anyone is interested in checking the place out. • Another one from the Salton Sea, a very desolate place. I would assume this snack bar is all that remains from a once thriving beachside resort area in the southeast California desert back in the 1960’s.
