  • Old South African farm house in the mountains of the Karoo in South Africa

  • Impesto Oil painting of a High mountain Desert sunset.

  • Watering hole in the desert. And man made. The landscaped promitory is the give-away.

  • Hmmm, wasen’t sure about this one but then I switched the radio to a classical music channel and ‘I got it’.

  • This is one of the peaks near Shiprock, NM in the northwestern part of the state with Shiprock being the most famous.

  • Soon after the sun rises and the alpenglow fades, the lighting evens out and gives more natural daytime colors. The wind dies down and gives better reflections and the wildlife comes out to greet the new day. I saw a couple of deer while photographing that morning. They were wandering across the lakeside on the right. The fishermen started coming out in numbers around this time and made things a little tough on me since I was set up right near the marina and had to wait wile boats passed through my viewfinder every few minutes. In the end though, it was a beautiful summer morning that I wish I could experience everyday.

  • Tufa is a build up of calcium that forms around underwater springs over long periods of time. They are now exposed because the water level at Mono Lake is low. What you are seeing is actually exposed lakebed that was underwater 100 years ago. How did it get so low? Because Los Angeles pumps its water from the streams that feed this lake. Then they send the water through an aquaduct for hundreds of miles until it gets to LA. They can steal all of this water because long ago they bought all the land from under the ranchers here for its water rights. Seems wrong to me that a city can buy up all this land so far away from its city boundaries and that they can essentially put the area into a never-ending drought. This is an HDR composed of 5 exposures taken 1 stop apart.

  • Laurel Mountain dominates much of the view at Convict Lake in the Eastern Sierras of California. The steep escarpment is known as the Sevehah Cliff. This photo was taken in early Spring when much of the higher elevations are still covered in snow.

  • This is a photo I have been holding onto for a long time waiting to process. I finally decided how I wanted it to look so here it is! This is Lake George, in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, Eastern Sierras, Ca. Fly fisherman often fish off of this shelf. I was just starting a hike that passes the lake and this scene caught my eye. The mountain in the background doesn’t have an official name but I have heard it called Red Mountain before. There was a lot of mining activity there in the 1800’s and early 1900’s.

  • I found this playa on a recent trip up to Sierra Nevada and i knew I would be back. This dry lakebed backs up against a cinder cone and in the far background the Sierras can be seen. It can be found near Fossil Falls in the Mojave Desert. I decided to do a B&W conversion of this photo due to popular request. Hope you enjoy it!

  • This is an original mixed media oil and acrylic painting. Thank you for viewing my art. / View susan’sgallery / View susan’szazzle /

  • Bench with a sunrise view in Death Valley National Park, California.

  • Badwater is a basin in California’s Death Valley, noted as the lowest point in North America, with an elevation of 282 feet (86 m) below sea level. Repeated freeze-thaw and evaporation cycles gradually pushed the thin salt crust into curiously hexagonal honeycomb shape.

  • This desert landscape has been transformed from my original photograph to this captivating abstract through software processing. The colors are rich and the scene is very dramatic.

  • This photograph of Hermosillo was taken during a storm from my car window. The window of blue sky on the upper left was an oval shaped portal surrounded by dark clouds. I didn’t have enough view from the car door to capture the entire scene, but I believe this small glimpse adequately presents the powerful movement of the elements. Olympus E-3, Zuiko 14-54 mm f/2.8-3.5, 0.6 Sec, f/2.9, ISO 200, 19 mm Copyright © Richard G.
