This was taken on the Owens River with the Sierras in the background. On the far left is the Mammoth Crest, to its right is Mammoth Mountain and it is actually a dormant volcano and a popular ski resort. To the right of that you can see the jagged Minarets and to the far right is Mount Ritter. The hills in the background are the resurgent dome. They are constantly being pushed upwards due to a pocket of magma filling up a few miles below the surface. The Owens River is the main source of water for Los Angeles via the L.A. Aquaduct. Los Angeles stole most of the water that used to feed this valley. This was exhibited at the 2008 Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa, Ca.
In the stars His handiwork I see, / On the wind He speaks with majesty. / Though He ruleth over land and sea, / What is that to me? / I will celebrate Nativity, / For it has a place in history, / Sure, He came to set His people free, / What is that to me? Till by faith I met Him face to face, / And I felt the wonder of His grace, / Then I knew that He was more / Than just a God who didn’t care, / That lived away out there / and ….. / Now He walks beside me day by day, / Ever watching o’er me lest I stray, / Helping me to find that narrow way, / He is everything to me. ”Forget the former things; / do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! / Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? / I am making a way in the desert / and streams in the wasteland.” / Isaiah 43:18-19 NIV God’s Spirit can guide and teach us through his word in such surprising ways. When God sends a message to us through scripture it is never by accident. In Isaiah 55:11, God says that wherever He sends His word it never returns empty, but always achieves the special purpose for which it was sent. Prayerfully consider the verse that inspired this painting and know that the Mighty God of all the heavens has reached out to touch you this moment. / “Under The Orange Sun” is the 8th stage of The Journey. The Travellers have come to a silent and almost barren land, where the heat of the sun beat mercilessly down…where to shelter was the first order of the day. DURING this time, we had left the bright and transparent forest far behind us. We were mute with astonishment, overcome by a kind of feeling which was next door to apathy. We kept running in spite of ourselves. It was a perfect Right, which resembled one of those horrible sensations we sometimes meet with in our dreams. Instinctively we made our way towards the Central Sea, and I cannot now tell what wild thoughts passed through my mind, nor of what follies I might have been guilty, but for a very serious preoccupation which brought me back to practical life. Though I was aware that we were treading on a soil quite new to us, I, however, every now and then noticed certain aggregations of rock, the shape of which forcibly reminded me of those near the Port. This confirmed, moreover, the indications of the compass and our extraordinary and unlooked-for, as well as involuntary, return to the north of this great Central Sea. It was so like our starting point, that I could scarcely doubt the reality of our position..Journey to the Centre of the Earth… / / There it lay, before me, as they had / said it would: a distance / I’d wish to cross, / then try to, then leave / off wishing. Words like arc, / and trajectory. And push. The words / themselves over time / coming to matter / the way, in painting, color does: less, / finally, than the gesture / each stroke / memorializes. C Phillips / / We reached the Valley of MIsts the next day…it was just as described…snow was still settled in the gullies and our shoes made no sound as we trudged over the rocky terrain…we stood for a while in silence….the quiet seemed to echo around us…no bird sang…our destination was still some ways off ...The Journey..Janis Zroback These hills, to hurt me more, / That am hurt already enough. / Having left the sea behind, / Having turned suddenly and left the shore / That I had loved beyond all words. excerpt E. St Vincent Millay / Is This Elysium? / The place the gods have set aside for man to rest? / All day long the sun and moon shone together in the sky… / Here are fields as high as the house, songs play from the windows… / Gold and green and princely red mix with the daises and the corn.. / Is This Elysium? J.Zroback / / Wind and weather brought us to this place.. / The distant sound of voices whisper across the water.. / Night and Silence…who is here? / Solitude and Silence are our only companions… / How curious the light that shines on the water!! / Night and Silence..who is here? / Echo answers nothing. ..J.Zroback / / We were not certain, but we were on the way to somewhere.. / The mountains in the distance seem to hold everything in shadow.. / Where we were, was a field of poppies, but there was snow in the hedgerows.. / Beyond were fields and yet more fields, then what appeared to be a ridge of smaller hills hidden by a block of dense trees… / Behind us the lands fell away to nothingness ..J. Zroback / / Winter whispered softly as we turned our way homewards… / Why is it so dark you asked, scarcely daring to breathe… / I didn’t answer, but clasped you closer to my heart, / As snowflakes hung suspended in the deep blue night ... J. Zroback / / Thou greatest Keeper of Secrets, / Most elusive, consummate Illusionist, / Riddlester non-pareil, Mazemaster, / Supreme Criptician - / From whom do You hide, / everywhere and nowhere? / For whom do You wait? / Who else? / Only the ocean can know the ocean.
Saline Valley is a large, deep, and arid valley in the northern Mojave Desert of Southern California. Most of it became a part of Death Valley National Park when the park expanded in 1994. This area had previously been administered by the BLM. It is located northwest of Death Valley proper, south of Eureka Valley, and east of the Owens Valley. The valley’s lowest elevations are about 1000 feet (300 m) and it lies in the rain shadow of the 14,000 foot (4300 m) Sierra Nevada Range, plus the 11,000 foot (3300 m) Inyo Mountains bordering the valley on the west. A large dry lake occupies the center of the valley. The west end of the lake supports a salt marsh, which contains a variety of plant and animal life. The marsh is fed by a perennial stream from Hunter Canyon. North of the lake is a large area of low sand dunes. There are a number of hot springs in the northeast corner of the valley. The water temperature at the source of these springs averages at 107°F (42°C). Saline Valley is a closed or Endorheic basin. If filled with water it would be over 4000 feet (1200 m) deep, form a lake with a surface area of roughly 500 square miles (1,300 km²), and hold approximately 500 million acre-feet (600 km³) of water.
While hiking in the Arizona desert a little east of Phoenix I came across this cactus standing alone.I loved the late afternoon light shining on it .The river in the backround was a bonus.

This is meant to represent the Nile in a bygone era. Again I remember seeing something similar, some where which has prompted this piece. The striking colour combination ensures that it draws the eye particularly to the central object. Like so many of my pieces it graces by back garden fence where I can view it while in the kitchen. I hope you enjoy it.
