Took this shot in Monument Valley, Utah. I love the way the colours just merge. Classic mexican style hut where people take payment for parking against the backdrop of this amazing red and pink valley. This photo is available as a limited edition elsewhere. Early beams of morning sunlight waking Goblins as it creeps across the valley; Goblin Valley that is.
We were fishing and I had my camera set up on a tripod as the sun went down. I took this photo maybe 10-15 minutes before dusk. The sun was at the perfect angle to cast some alpenglow on the Sierras in the background. I thought the kayaker was a nice touch too.
I set my alarm for 4:30 AM but it didn’t go off for some reason and I ended up waking up at 5:20… So I rushed out of my campsite in Rock Creek Canyon and drove like a madman up Highway 395 to get to Convict Lake before sunrise. I made it to one of my favorite spots just as the fishermen were starting to show up. I took some photos before sunrise and got ready for the light show…
This photo was taken a little after dawn at Convict Lake in Sierra Nevada. The alpenglow was amazing and lasted for quite some time. Convict Lake is situated on the eastern side of the range which is made up of steep cliffs and very scenic vistas. Since it faces east you have to get up for the sunrise if you want to see the alpenglow. Sunset is beautiful as well but nothing compares to the beautiful reds and oranges reflecting off the stark granite.

Mount Morrison is a very majestic part of the scenery at Convict Lake in the Eastern Sierras of California. The oldest rocks in the mountain range can be found there. The mountain gets its name from a famous old west shootout that happened at Convict Creek. To summarize, some outlaws broke out of prison in Carson City, Nevada and headed to this area to hide in the canyon. A posse was formed to capture them headed by Robert Morrison with their Paiute indian guide “Mono” Jim. Both were killed in the violent gun battle that ensued. Mono Jim Mountain can be seen in the foreground.
This photo was taken at the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley, California. Unfortunatly when we got there thick storm clouds moved in and so we missed the chance for a nice sunset. No one what makes these rocks drift across the lake bed leaving long trails, but whatever the reason, this was one of the most interesting places we visited in the park. It took about 90 mins to drive here over rough roads (park rangers recommended 4wd only but when we got there we met another tourist who had made it in his tiny 2wd rental car, in a much faster time than us).

Mount Morrison towers over Convict Lake. At dusk it is the last mountain in the canyon to give up the sun’s light. In the foreground is Mono Jim Peak. I return to this area many times every year trying to capture the beauty of every season. It is a very special place for me.

This is Lake George, located in the Eastern Sierras of California. Crystal crag looms over the lake along the Mammoth Crest. It’s amazing to me that the ice doesn’t break up until this late in Spring.

The Valley of Fire is a Nevada State Park in southeastern Nevada. It is a very unique area of wind, water and sand eroded sandstone, desert and mountains with unusual landscapes. The area has been utilized in many Hollywood motion picture productions due to its unusual landscapes. This area was home to native americans for thousands of years and petroglyphs (picture writings) from 1 to 4 thousand years old can be found on various stone walls throughout the area.
Was wondering thru my AZ pics and came across this one which I think worked.
