Skeleton of Coyote and Datura blossom. Photo based mixed medium image.
Desert plant life has appealed to me for a long time. The different varieties of cactus, agave and yucca all have such interesting and unique shapes and are some of my favorites to paint. I found this agave near Old Town in Albuquerque. I recently sold 2 canvas prints of this image to a Redbubble mystery buyer – thank you!

Receding light on the mittens of Monument Valley. A truely powerfull place. An image really dosen’t serve this place justice. A must see (feel) for ones self. I hope this gives it a good attempt. /

A young brave is watching in the shadows of the trees. All executed from scratch. In Photoshop Elements I choose a blank “canvas” then I select a brush and start drawing/painting. Again, I take a huge dose of “patience.” :) /

Found this guy long after he had spotted me, but he was brave, I got within about 10’ without his moving and shot probably 40 pics over the course of a couple hours (as I kept coming back). Upper Antelope Canyon The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tse’ bighanilini, which means “the place where water runs through rocks.” Upper Antelope is at about 4,000 feet in elevation and the canyon walls rise 120 feet above the stream bed. Though dry most of the year, Antelope Canyon runs, and sometimes floods, with water after rains. It is the water, slowly wearing away the sandstone grain by grain, that has formed the beautiful and graceful curves in the rock. Wind has also played a role in sculpting this fantastic canyon. / Was so lucky at one point to have the canyon to myself, peaceful, serene and incredibly beautiful. / WARNING / ©2008 Globalphotos All rights reserved. / All photographs, text and images by Globalphotos are the exclusive property of Globalphotos – protected under Australian and international copyright laws. / These images may not be reproduced, copied or manipulated without written permission. / No use for Public Domain. / Use of any image for another photographic concept or illustration is a violation of copyright.

The classic Monument Valley photograph featuring the East and West Mittens and I believe Merrick Butte. This started as a color HDR image from six separate frames. Three exposures of each half were converted to HDR images and the two resulting HDR images were stitched together into a wider panoramic view for maximum detail. That was then converted to B&W for the most impact. Photo taken in Monument Valley, Utah (Navajo Territory) This image has been featured in the American Southwest group and HDR Photography group. It also recently won 1st place in a photo contest at H&H Color Lab and 4th place out of 200 entries in the B&W Landscape Challenge on DPReview.com.
The adobe-walled courtyard with street access is typical of southwestern U.S. architecture. Doors are often painted in bright colors and it is not unusual to see adornments of skulls, horns, or fanciful handmade ornaments representing desert flora or fauna. In this case, we have a set of horns and a tin lamp shade that has been decorated with a punched design depicting a quarter moon. The sunset is a transplant from another photo. This courtyard and door can be found in Pena Blanca, New Mexico, on state highway 22. The photo is an HDR merge performed in PSP XII. Taken with a Pentax K20D.
My wife had cordially begun the hike back, allowing me to linger at The Wave. Looking over the shoulder of Wave, the darkening distance convinced me, that I too must leave this location – and the moment. March 3, 2009 ISO200 1/125 F11 Nikon D-80, / AF-S Nikkor 18-135mm, @18mm

This image of the Right Mitten framed in between two rocks shows the shadow of the Left Mitten falling across it. The Sky was doing some amazing things behind me and I noticed that most people had truned for the sunset. I steedfast remained shooting into the park. The change in colour taking place in the Valley as the sunset came closer was amazing. The right rock is slightly burned in but I am not one to play in Layers. This is a 3 image HDR given only a slight adjustment. The resulting image was then processed in CS3 with a slight adjustment to straighten the horizion and curves to add a little extra contrast. All 3 images to make the HDR were shot with a Nikon D70 Featured in That One Great Shot / Featured in Top Shelf Wildlife & Nature Art ! / Featured in Mornings and Evenings / Featured in American Southwest / Featured in Dimensions 588 views on the 5th Nov 2009

“Desert Charm” is the first painting in a series of desert cactus flowers. The original watercolor is 30×22” and is painted on 140 lb Arches watercolor paper. When you think about the desert, what do you think about first? Sand, lots of sand, sand storms that sting the eyes, baron stretches of land, land with very little vegetation, and heat, unbearable heat are all things that came to mind when I thought about it. What a delightful surprise the cactus flowers were for me. Someone once told me that cactus flowers were evidence that God intended all to have beauty as he painted these beautiful flowers in n otherwise harsh environments. One spring in Arizona and I was hooked. I loved the southwest and knew this beautiful land would be a major influence in my painting.
