Thoughts welcomed, print to come! _“We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill / As the day begs the night for mercy love / The sun so bright it leaves no shadows / Only scars / Carved into stone / On the face of earth / The moon is up and over One Tree Hill / We see the sun go down in your eyes You run like a river, on to the sea / You run like a river runs to the sea” / —-U2, “One Tree Hill”_

  • Scenic Road traveling through the Sierras in California

  • Horseshoe Bend is the name for a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona, in the United States. It is located slightly downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell, about four miles or 6 km south of Page. Accessible via a 3⁄4-mile (1.2 km) hike from U.S. Route 89, it can be viewed from the steep cliff above, forming a spectacular vista. / This image is actually made of 4 pictures taken with my Canon 20D – 17-40mm L lens and stitched together to create this panoramic

  • As the sun sets against the Sandia Range outside of Albuquerque New Mexico, the light was just amazing, with the storms coming in and the color changing almost every second, I set up my tripod and had at it…I really wanted an image that conveyed a sense of high drama and showcased the light for what it was, so I sat and thought to myself and said “What if Ansel Adams was shooting this, what would he do??” and wallah, this is how it translated. Thoughts welcomed! / —John

  • New Mexico ….well known for it’s light to photographers and this is one example as to why. During this time of the year, the sun often tends to linger in the western sky and cast some amazing long and warm shadows to the East, and lucky for me, that meant against the Sandia Mountain Range. What really got me is that sheer openess of everything, just huge, gigantic open spaces that one can stop at, set up their gear, and have at it. Anytime, anywhere, and people don’t look at ya like you’re 1/2 insane lol Anyways, thoughts appreciated! / —-John

  • And there I stood in the middle of the New Mexican desert, awaiting the sun to come over the peaks of the Sandia’s….my tripod was so cold I couldn’t even touch it, thankfully I had the car behind me running, where I was returning to for some hand warming every 3 minutes. However, it was worth it! It is just so utterly tranquil, not a sound, lost in the vastness of nature….... Thoughts welcomed!

  • Boats at a waterside cafe in a sunny misty morning

  • Took this image as we were hiking in the Arches National Park in Utah. Really found this area so amazing from the rock formations (arches) to how well the Nature (trees, plants, wildlife) had adapted to a incredibly hard and arid environment. Pretty much everything has a purpose out in the desert and it’s true, only the strongest survive the elements. Always thought this image shows this in a way. / Canon Xt, Sigma 17-35mm, UV filter, better viewed full screen / As is with no post editing / Cheers

  • Garden Of the Gods, Colorado Springs, Colorado Ya know, one of the things which I have noticed here on DA is the lack of traditional B&W Landscape Photography. Sure, we see the avant guard stuff done in long exposure from the French photographers, plenty of waterscapes, but where has the tradition gone as far as Landscapes is concerned? It makes me kind of sad to think that the art of B&W Landscape Photography done in the traditional sense is being lost….and I can’t help but think, what would Ansel think or Clyde Butcher? (another one of my HUGE influences by the way) When I shot this I had to be pretty careful, sitting on a blind curve isn’t always the best of ideas, but I had to get it and I was determined, I wanted the road in this specifically not just for scale, but for perspective, the way it leads the eye when you look at it, and for sheer compositional sake. I like the way it splits the landscape into 2 parts, separating the top and the bottom, it also makes the viewer notice the immediate surrounds more, like the Yuca’s growing in the bottom part on the left side of the road. I think this one I will print out large for myself, 18×24 or greater, fo some reason it just has the look & feel that I love, and I can’t imagine any smaller displayed on my wall. / I hope you all like it as much as I do! / Let me know your thoughts! / —-John

  • I return to this exact spot a lot. I have to say it is one of my favorite places to take photographs. This canyon is one of nature’s great cathedrals. It’s hard to explain the feeling that comes over you when you are standing there staring out across the water…Especially during this time of year, when there is nobody else out there. You can have the whole place to yourself, or share it with someone special.

  • This to me gives this sacred place the feel I was looking for. It is in northwestern New Mexico in the Four Corners area where New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and Utah all meet and is a very sacred place to the Navajo people. Taken on 7/23/07 with a Canon 20D / 10-22mm EF-S lens 22mm<br />1/200th sec f11 and ISO 100

  • Looking north up the length of Jordan Pond…the twin peaks (yes, they look like…) in the center are ‘The Bubbles’...the mountain to the left in frame is Penobscot Mountain…the mountain to the right in frame is Pemetic Mountain…a cold, and very windy day, this pond is very protected; it is usually very calm…one of the most popular places, on one of the busiest weekends of the year for tourists, but I could still get shots without people…nice place! / This area is easily accessible, with carriage roads, a great walking path around the lake, a natural amphitheater, and an excellent (and usually crowded) restaurant… Jordan Pond, Acadia National Park, Mt.
