Driving along a back road, I saw this strong adobe wall with this grand entrance. The sky was exceptionally blue and the Purple Sage and Spanish Broom were in full bloom everywhere. So, I couldn’t resist adding those into the painting, reminding me of what a beautiful spring it was. This is an original acrylic painting on canvas.
Two detailed lightning strikes, one making a circle in the sky, with nice cloud definition and a desert landscape.

Opinions needed. I need one or two more images for my Deserts Calendar and this is one candidate. Thumbs up or down? I found these fascinating formations of clay to remind me of pawns on a chessboard. Last Light illuminating the odd formations of Goblin Valley State PArk in Utah.

Strong southerly winds carry tonnes of sand hundred of kilometres from South Australia and deposit them into the Northern Territory. A scene with movement and drama this has to be one of my favourites from around the base. Shot at the entrance of the Mujutuulu waterhole on the southern side of Uluru. “Mother Nature’s sculpture” was featured in the groups / Unconventional Artistry / American Southwest / The Art of Intrigue / and The Great Outdoors One of “The Seven Sisters”, as these huge rock formations are called. Photo taken in the Valley of Fire, Nevada, USA, beginning of December 2008, with m y Canon PowerShot S5 IS camera. Information from Wikipedia: / Valley of Fire State Park is Nevada’s oldest State Park. It covers an area of 34,880 acres (141 km²) and was dedicated in 1935. Valley of Fire is located 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Las Vegas at an elevation of between 2,000 and 2,600 feet (610 and 790 m). It abuts the Lake Mead National Recreation Area at the Virgin River confluence. It lies in a basin 4 miles (6 km) wide by 6 miles (10 km) long, 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Clark County, Nevada. The rough floor and jagged walls of the park contain brilliant formations of eroded sandstone and sand dunes more than 150 million years old. These features, which are the centerpiece of the park’s attractions, often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun’s rays. The Valley of Fire derives its name from red sandstone formations, formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs. Complex uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created the present landscape. Other important rock formations include limestones, shales, and conglomerates. / / Prehistoric users of the Valley of Fire included the Ancient Pueblo Peoples, also known as the Anasazi who were farmers from the nearby fertile Moapa Valley. The span of approximate occupation has been dated from 300 B.C. to 1150 A.D. Their visits probably involved hunting, food gathering, and religious ceremonies, although scarcity of water would have limited the length of their stay. Fine examples of rock art left by these ancient peoples can be found at several sites within the park.

Mt Mary – South Australia Please take the time to view LARGE Originally named Krichauff, settled in 1894, the name was changed, as many town names were, during the 1st World War – to Mt Mary. / 22kms from the once busy river port of Morgan, Mt Mary at its peak had 200 residents, working the charcoal pits, cutting timber for steam boats and farming wool. Housing subdivisions and roads surveyed, street names selected, but it was to come to nothing / The last train departed in 1969 and now the permanent residents consist of the publican, Swannie, his wife, Annie and Jack, their red heeler dog. One of those places on this Earth that I yearn to re-visit. can you blame me ? It is like being on another planet, all those weird shaped rocks, Buttes, Mesas, the gritty dryness, the intense heat of the the mid -day sun, the way the light changes…...I fell in love with this place ! / I got up early for this one, not that I could sleep anyway knowing this place was outside of the motel where we stayed ! / This is the land of the Navajo, and I sat inside a Hogan, where I watched and talked to a man making some jewellery. Very fine work. We solved the problems of the modern world in a very short time ! / This DOES need to be viewed larger to appreciate the details ! I scanned this from a Fuji Velvia transparency, on a Nikon Coolscan V ED, edited it in PS CS3, cleaning up with the spot healing brush, and a little noise reduction. I also employed just a tad ‘Orton’, which I felt enhanced the ‘grittiness’ of the amazing desert. / Shot on my secondhand Ricoh KR10 super. f11, with polarising filter. I cannot remember the lens !
