  • Maybe a fault line running through layers of sedimentary rock

  • The dunes just outside Stovepipe Wells on the Mesquite Flats in Death Valley National Park. This shot was taken around 6am, trying to make the most of high-contrast early-morning light. In the event, a haze close to the horizon kept the scene from being heavily contrasty. With the vertical crop I really wanted to emphasize the clouds- at first they dissapointed me, but when I saw how they stood out with the polarizer, I found they made an integral part of the composition, and are a nice textural counterpart to the sand and the ripples. The splashes of sunlight on the face of the big dune really brought out the shape and form of the sand too. May 2007.

  • Beautiful sun rays hitting the ground. Captured in the Australian outback, South West Queensland.

  • / Image of the Parade of Elephants rock formation at Arches National Park located in east central Utah.

  • Giant sand dunes in desert near Sossusvlei Namibia, Africa

  • Shot in the Sahara Desert, Libya near the Algerian border. This really is an amazing place! A feast for the eyes. Nikon D300, 12-24mm f/4 at 12mm. / . / / . /

  • Top of a desert sand dune in southern Idaho USA

  • best viewed large :)

  • I found this playa on a recent trip up to Sierra Nevada and i knew I would be back. This dry lakebed backs up against a cinder cone and in the far background the Sierras can be seen. It can be found near Fossil Falls in the Mojave Desert. I decided to do a B&W conversion of this photo due to popular request. Hope you enjoy it!

  • Calendar with scenes from Death Valley National Park, California. I know it is quite late for 2009, but I couldn’t resist putting this together. Looking forward to 2010, I guess… :)

  • Remnants of people’s attempts to live in the harsh climate of inland Australia. Much evidence of nature’s dominance over man’t attempts is revealed.

  • Taken on the way home from a visit to the ‘snow’ in January- hot, incredibly dry with the promise of a cool change. So very, very desired.

  • This used to be the bed of a lake that was formed by the Emerald Dam and the Avalanche Dam in the Nilgiris, India. After 2 years of no rain, vast areas of the reservoir have dried up, leaving only small trickling streams of water where there once was a lake. This year, the rains are expected on time. We can only hope. Nikon D80 / f/9.0; 1/125 Sec / +0.33 ISO 100 / Sigma 10-20 @ 10mm / Hoya CPL

  • A mixture of photography and freehand drawing. Deserted represents the feeling of being empty and abandoned…. For limited edition prints on Fuji Crystal Archive Paper – Matt finish, send me a message! Commissions welcome!

  • April showers brought May flowers in some places, but in the alkali desert, a few tufts of hardy grass spring forth. / Steptoe Valley – Eastern Nevada / (2009.MAY.01) Placed Top Ten in Lines Challenge on Made By Nature Featured in Natural Textures / (2009.MAY.12) RedBubble Album: Harsh Realities / Canon 350D EOS / Tamron 55/200mm + Polarizer Corel PhotoImpact x3

  • Just another one of the awesome dunes that make up the Sahara Desert in Libya. / Nikon D300, 24 to 120mm at 36mm, f/18, 1/80 sec, WB manual, ISO 100. / / . /

  • Excerpt from: / The Upas Tree / by Aleksandr Pushkin. Deep in the desert’s misery / Far in the fury of the sand, / there stands the awesome Upas Tree / lone watchman of a lifeless land. The wilderness a world of thirst, / in wrath engendered it and filled / its every root, every accursed / grey leafstalk with a sap that killed. Dissolving in the midday sun / the poison oozes through its bark, / and freezing when the day is done / gleams thick and gem-like in the dark….. This is actually nowhere near the desert, it is a pic of a leafless tree in Glen Innes Auckland New Zealand, with a few woody layers and a rotated inverted layer of forest in the background. Oh – imagination is such a wonderful thing. :) Featured in “JPG Castoffs” group. / Featured in “Digital Artists United” group.

  • Thought I’d put this one on a T-shirt…..

  • The Westernmost outpost of the Sahara Desert: the sand dunes of Maspalomas on Gran Canaria.
