  • The barren and relentless Australian outback often has examples of flora or fauna surviving against the odds. Barren with Fruitful, Dry with Wetlands, Desert with Ocean. The picture depicts a typical image of a single living tree on the top of a mountain scattered with dead trees.

  • Heading out of the north-west corner of Death Valley National Park the road ran through a narrow pass. I love deserts, both from a photography perspective but also personally- I find them rugged and wild, and I love the aloneness out there. In this instance, the mineral deposits had left all manner of wonderful colours in the rocks both at the roadside and on the hills. I love how an area that has basically been completely ignored by people for being far too barren to be of real use still lends beauty to those who take the time to check it out. May 2007.

  • Tripping through the Mojave Desert this fencepost caught my eye. I really loved the contrast between the blackened wood and the yellow flowers, and while it seemed a bit of a funny subject at the time, visually I was really pleased with how it turned out. Not the sort of shot I was expecting to take when I headed out there, but it’s funny what you end up coming across on a photo expedition… :o) May 2007.
