Derby Western Australia put on a real show for sunset this night.
The colours of the sunset here are tremendous. It is a pleasure to watch the changing colours long after the sun sets, the lights come on and all the other sunset watchers leave (before the best bit!!!). This is the second night we spent in Derby. I have also uploaded the shot from the first night but can’t decide which I prefer. The colours were different on the two nights due to fire in the area.
On the hill above the River Derby at Derby in the North-East of Tasmania, these rocks have been used by an artist to create a graffiti image of a trout, suitably apt as the river is great for trout fishing!! / /

This was taken at the Thunder Over Louisville fireworks show, which is part of the Kentucky Derby festival. At first I was annoyed that these guys were standing in the way…for most of the fireworks, it wasn’t a problem, but when they did the burning cascades over the bridge, they were right there…oy! Now I’m glad they were there…what are your thoughts? Thanks for looking! Here’s a link to their site if you’d like to learn more: / http://www.thunderoverlouisville.org/ This image was recently chosen for publication in this book: / Capture Kentuckiana / /
At the urging of several fellow RB aficionados I have remade this photo with a relevant background sans the offending barbed wire. SC and PS work. / I hope everyone likes it. / Taken east of Okotoks, AB
Oink is a buffalo who is 15 years old. He lives in Derbyshire about 4 miles from me and he’s a beautiful boy! Sadly, some thugs have been cruel to him, adding washing up liquid to his water, putting mustard on his food, throwing bricks at him, whipping him with fishing rods and setting fire to his hay! The beautiful Appaloosa is a breed of horse, and not a color. Not all Appaloosas have a coat pattern; Appaloosas can come in solid colors as well. And there is much more to the Appaloosa than its color or coat pattern. Appaloosa horses, based on Spanish stock, were originally bred in the Inland northwest of America by the Nez Perce Indians, the only Native Americans known to selectively breed their horses. The breed almost died out after the U.S. cavalry slaughtered the Indian’s horses after chasing the tribe into the Bear Paw mountains of Montana. Appaloosas are very versatile having great endurance and excellent dispositions. They are hardy, strong, fast, sure footed and have a quiet temperament. Although they can be stubborn, most Appaloosas are extremely intelligent and willing. Tthe Appaloosa is used in a wide variety of sports, from rodeo, to jumping, and showing, and it is a good trail riding and long distance horse. / /

All ready for a night on the town! Reminiscent of a bygone era when the dapper gentleman would hit the town in style. An elegant silver handled walking stick, white derby hat, cigars in a Spanish leather cigar case, and an 1881 Morgan silver dollar to pay the tab. There is also a bottle and glass of whiskey to get him started. Canon 50D – Canon 17-55 – f22 Also see the companion piece for the ladies! /
very few things are sexier than fishnets, wheels and bruises.

Arguably one of the most graceful locomotives ever to have run on rails this class of 4-2-2 express engine designed by Johnson and built at the Midland Railways works at Derby were further enhanced by the wonderful Crimson Lake livery. The single driver enjoyed a brief period of popularity in the 1890s due to the recent development of the steam sander which helped adhesion on starting from rest but growing train weights led designers to revert to coupled wheel-sets, but lacking the fricton of coupling rods the single had a superior free running capability which made for economy on coal. Painted for a client in acylics on board 20”x30” about 8 years ago, today I’d use oils to exploit the colour of the loco and fade off the distance more and perhaps soften the smoke. Commissions? Watercolour of the 12th century, Haddon Hall, Derbyshire. / Taken from Rinkydink’s original photo. I used lots of lifting off and negative painting, to get the tonal contrasts. I wanted to emphasize the age and wonderful textures of the old stone work – almost a thousand years old. I’ve entered this in the Just Watercolours group challenge. / I really liked the original photo colouring. For this, I needed a limited palette of just four – sienna, umber, cerulean and yellow , which I used in various dilutions and mixtures. St Petersburg watercolour pans. 12 X 8 inches 30×20 cms / Poundworld 90lb paper.
