Cassa called me last night and said it was time for a new shoot. So she put together her outfit (got her the coat last year at a vintage shop) and tonight we went to the tracks and got a few shots in before some rail workers came down the track and Cassa ran to the car! Ha! / She is such a cutie!
This was inspired by “The Arrival”, a wordless narrative about the immigrant experience by the amazing Australian illustrator Shaun Tan. In that book, there are dirigible-like aricraft and the idea of fleeing from an oppressive society. So the two ideas came together to form the idea of a bird boat that rescues people and takes them somewhere better. Also see under the old Waterboys song “Strange Boat”.
On my way to a wedding in Melbourne, I took this shot very spare of the moment while boarding said aircraft a few seconds later. Funny thing is that literally as I took the shot a security guard sped over to me in a little golf cart thing and told me off for taking a photo in a secure area! The thing is, having worked in the airline industry on the tarmac for the previous 13 years having taken my own pics and seen countless others take shots without question within the airport, the first picture I take as a passenger and I’m accussed of being a terrorist, haha! Nikon D90, Sigma 10-20mm, HDR’d in Photomatix with 3 exposures of -2, 0 & +2, quick tidy up in Iphoto.

A RedBubble exclusive image. (JA suggests viewing LARGE.) Altering one of the faces from my pencil drawing Sudden Departure, I added her to an oil pastel painting I did recently – as an experiment. The painting is intentionally blurred a bit here. I wanted to try to get the dancers rooted together but still flowing a little on their own. Since the original face was heavily influenced by the Noh mask, I wanted “The Dance” to have some of the unusual elements that Noh dancing does. One movement is to “dance without moving.” The rhythm of movement is extremely important; the rhythm should grow and then fade like a flower blooming and withering. Some movements are so subtle that they cannot be taught; although dancers begin training in childhood, they are said to achieve their best performance in middle age. (I like that.) Detail: /

I felt the need for some symmetry this eve, so I played around with these two. The hand and gown come from my drawing Nocturnal Tendencies / The face comes from my drawing Sudden Departure / / The hands and leaves on the face comes from much messed with clip art, as is true of the scarf. / The background is a much messed with photo that I had here of a simple texture. Twins. /
