This awesome photograph of a huge storm front approaching does not really do the scene justice. This is meant to be viewed as a large print so you can take in the enormity of what I saw and photographed that day. My camera club mate and I were doing our regular “beach patrol” on the lookout for likely subjects and this place was the last port of call. We had seen part of the cloud formation as we were driving along but it was not until we got to the top of the hill that we realised just how big this thing was. The shot was made on top of Tacking Point, overlooking Lighthouse Beach in Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia on a great Spring afternoon. People began gathering from all around and I’m sure that each one had a different camera. For a while it was almost elbow to elbow as we all tried to get the best vantage point. I ended up as far to our right and as far back as common sense and the cliff allowed and even then with my lens at its 28mm widest I could not fit it all in. The camera was hand held as I braced myself like a bipod in the stiff breeze as I had left my tripod in my car at home as we thought we would not need it that day. There’s a lesson in there I think! What I really like about the final result is the sense of powerlessness this scene gives me as the massive southerly front looms larger and larger up and over the scene and the beautiful luminosity of the clouds. THE SUBJECT: / What seems to be a tangled mess of fishing net and floats is really a well laid out mess of fishing net and floats which I found in the stern of a small fishing boat. / I really like the intricate chaos of net and the colour and texture of the float that seems entrapped in a tangled web. THE LOCATION: / On the beach at Seal Rocks, NSW, Australia on a very grey, overcast and later on wet summer day. THE MAKING OF ‘Oh What a Tangled Web’: / I had to lean right over the gunwales of the boat to get the right angle of shot then I tried many different camera rotations to get the right composition. / After an initial cropping prior to processing I received a couple of very helpful suggestions and decided to crop it even more. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Macro, f/8 @ 1/60, Pop-up flash at lowest power, ISO80, Hand held. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS. This close-up was made at an ‘Open Garden’ day put on by a member of my camera club at her rather large semi-rural property ‘Torwood’ at Wauchope , NSW, Australia, in early Spring 2006. She told us that 98% of all plants were Australian Natives. To the joy of all who were there, most of the small plants, shrubs and trees were in flower and the air was filled with the sights and sounds of honeyeater birds and lots and lots of ….. BEES! :) This bee is a European Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) and the flowering bush is a member of Protea (Leucospermum sp) family. Neither specimen here is a native to Australia as the Protea is from South Africa, one of the few exotics growing in the grounds. The early morning sunlight was just perfect as it lit up the little scene and made the dewdrops gleam. A Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club friend was nearby shooting bees with his literally thousands of dollars worth of Canon DSLR camera, macro lens and synchronised strobe flash so he was able to walk around the bush making heaps of shots on motor drive. To come home with a good ‘bee’ shot with my camera I had to attack the problem from a different angle. Mr Fuji was sitting high on his Tripod, baring his lens to the breeze, being stripped of his UV Filter and Adapter assembly for the close-up. / The camera was set to Macro Mode, Spot Metering and Centre Focussing on Standard Colour Setting. I went fully manual for this shot as I can only use the 1/2000sec Shutter Speed in Manual Mode and from previous experience I used the f/3.1 Aperture even though the light was quite strong. This has to be done with the S5500 as if I try using a smaller aperture the result is way too dark. The Fuji’s flash will not work on shutter speeds faster than 1/1000sec so any shots I make over that speed have to be in good light. I then pre-focussed on the side of the main flower, framed the shot by moving the camera around on the tripod head and tightened the tripod clamps, all the while holding the shutter button down halfway and … waited! Sure enough, a very busy bee flew right up to the flower, hovered only momentarily and ZAP!, I squeezed the shutter button all the way and here it is! THE SUBJECT: / These rodeo clowns literally put their bodies and lives on the line. I have seen one bloke throw himself over a fallen bull rider and take a hammering from the enraged bull. / This bloke is more of a rodeo matador than a rodeo clown. THE LOCATION: / The 2007 Kundabung Rodeo held annually at Kundabung , NSW, Australia, a small rural community between Port Macquarie and Kempsey. THE MAKING of ‘Rodeo Clown #1’: / The shot shows once again just how good the angle is from the top row of the small grandstand on which my Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club friends and I were perched. And to think I was going to stay on the fence!!!!! / It was a very pleasant warm to hot spring day and I was perched on the top row of the small but very steep grandstand beside my two best camera club mates. It was a great day with plenty of bullriding action, music, rodeo clowns, good food and great Aussie country hospitality. / Unfortunately because of an Equine ‘Flu epidemic there were no horses at this year’s rodeo but the action with the bulls was enough to keep the adrenalin racing for us spectators as well as the riders. / Fuji S9600: RAW, 1/1000sec @ f/4.2, ISO80, Continuous focus, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. In my opinion the beaches of Cape Cod have to be one of the most rewarding photo locations in the world. Everywhere you turn the combination of unique lighting, amazing tidal pools and undisturbed solitude provide photographers with seemingly endless opportunities to capture memorable images. This low tide image is of Chapin Beach in the town of Dennis. While the original unaltered photo can certainly stand on its own merits, I thought that the addition of some texture might give the scene a whole different feeling. To me the weathered wood texture lends an almost painted feel to the final image. An artist could have painted this scene fifty years ago on a piece of old wood found on a beach or in a shed. I can’t wait to vacation on the Cape again and spend hours roaming those magical beaches. “If you’re fond of sand dunes and salty air / Quaint little villages here and there / You’re sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod” / -Patti Page/”Old Cape Cod”
