This lovely waterscape was photographed from the shore of Perch Hole, a part of the Lake Innes , just south of Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia, late on an autumn afternoon. Fuji S9600, hand held. I had set out to shoot just the waterscape until I heard the boat coming from my left so I pre-focussed and waited until the boat was between the two trees. THE SUBJECT: / There were more than orchids on display and these Kalanchoes were among the other plants adding their colour and texture. THE LOCATION: / The Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club was invited to set up an exhibition of floral photography at the Hastings River Orchid Society’s 2007 Orchid and Visual Crafts Show held at the Wauchope Returned Soldiers League Club in Wauchope, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘Kalanchoe Caper’: / My club president and myself set up, manned and packed up our exhibition of fifty eight mounted prints over the two day exhibition. / This was a golden opportunity for any keen photographer so my mate and I took full advantage of the event to hone our skills on the many varieties of orchids and other plants on display. / Eventually our photographs will be burned onto a CD and presented to the orchid society as a record for their members and I have been asked to produce a few prints as well. / I used the ambient light of our exhibition room which consisted of diffused daylight flooding in across from my left and strong, diffused tungsten lights in the ceiling. / I used my White Balance Lens Cap to set the Custom White Balance as this rendered the best natural colours. / We were able to take the plants from the exhibition and set them up on a low bench with an off white cotton backdrop. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Macro, Manual settings of f/11 @ 1.5sec, ISO80, Manual focus, Tripod, Timer. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS3. THE MAKING of ‘Cacey the Presenter’: / Cacey was seventeen years old at the time would you believe and certainly has her head screwed on as she says she has known ever since she was seven years old that she wanted to be a professional make-up artist and work towards make-up artistry for plastic surgery. As soon as I saw her in this pose and with this expression, facing one of the lights, I quickly focussed and made the shot. / Now here is where the Photographer’s Luck comes in. Unknown to us all, the light on our right was accidentally set at ¼ power and had little to no affect for this shot – and just look at the result the lighting gave me!!!!! / I was the only one there to get this so I am sooooo chuffed. / This sort of lighting affect just screams out for B&W so the original was up for conversion for sure. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/8 @ 1/160sec, Auto focus, ISO80, Hand held. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, here we have a fine specimen of a Caleana major (Flying Duck Orchid), an Australian native terrestrial orchid which grows in sandy alkaline heath-land on the east coast. The flowers are only ¾” (2cm) long, two flowers on a n 8” (20cm) stem and with only a single spear shaped leaf at ground level. When disturbed, the flowers drop their heads, lift their tails and curl up. This is to trap any pollinating insect inside until released perhaps hours later or even overnight. Because of their small size and drab colouring they are difficult to find. This one and a handful of others in the near vicinity were discovered by accident as I was attempting to photograph a different wildflower. Lucky me! This li’l quacker was photographed in the wild, along the Ocean Drive Fire Trail in the Queen’s Lake Nature Reserve at North Haven, NSW, Australia, on a lovely Spring afternoon, in the company of two friends from the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club., while on a wildflower hunt. To obtain the angle of shot to isolate the orchid from the background and to be able to get very close to this little flower, I was lying on my left side, resting on my shoulder, with Mr Fuji hand held, viewfinder hard against my glasses and using controlled breathing. The UV Filter was off and the screw-on Macro Lens was on to get as much of the orchid in the frame as possible. To make the shot I chose to go fully manual as previous attempts using aperture priority were giving me big problems with exposure due to the dark flower and the overcast lighting. Pop-up flash is not an option when using the screw-on Macro Lens and I didn’t even think of using my slave flash unit. (If I had, it would have been very hard to use the pop-up flash to set it off so it may not have worked). Fuji S5500: High resolution jpg, Macro Mode, f/2.8 @ 1/160sec, ISO100. / Photoshop CS. THE SUBJECT: / A Boiga irregularis (Brown Tree Snake) all coiled and ready for action was only centimetres (inches) away from my lens as I crouched down to make this close-up. / Yes it IS poisonous but it is one of the smaller rear fanged varieties of snake so it would not be able to give me a bite. They are a nocturnal species and can become aggressive when disturbed. / [These are the snakes which made their way to Guam during WII and are still causing havoc to that island’s environment.] THE LOCATION: / Once a year the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club meets up with the local North Coast Herpetological Group for a day of photography and a BBQ. The event is called ‘Snakes Alive!’ / They bring the snakes and lizards, we take photographs for them and then we all have a BBQ. A really great day for all. This was a great find! Two different species of fungus growing snugly side by side at the bottom of a moss covered fallen log. The little trio are Mycena leaiana and their big brother is a Suillus granulatus, both species being native Aussie fungi . The photograph was made in an old pine plantation in off the Maxwell Flat Road in the Cottan-Bimbang# National Park , between Gingers Creek and Wauchope , NSW, Australia, early on an autumn day. I was on a day trip with a Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club friend who knows the area well and we both spent a good four hours in this plantation photographing the many different varieties of fungi that were on show in some wonderful forest light. #Cottan-Bimbang is the local Aboriginal name for the Linospadix monostachya (Walking Stick Palms) which are very prominent in the area Fuji S9600: RAW, Macro, Manual Priority, Manual focus, f/8 @ 0.77sec, ISO80, Tripod, Timer, Low powered flash. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS. This fine head study of a Pelecanus conspicillatus (Australian Pelican) , was made along the Fisherman’s Moorings on the Hastings River in Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia, late on an autumn afternoon. THE SUBJECT: / A misty, moody Australian bush scene was photographed along an old logging track seems slightly primordial. THE LOCATION: / In the wilds of the Willi Willi National Park , up in the mountains far west of Kempsey, NSW, Australia on a very wet and chilly winter day. / This view in the opposite direction to Into the Mist #2 . THE MAKING of ‘Into the Mist #1’: / I had not realised the difficulty in photographing misty scenes such as this but I soon discovered that even though the light was very low there was still a big problem with the dynamic range. Aperture Priority did not work for me here so I opted for Shutter Priority, 1/60sec being the slowest speed recommended for a hand held shot. UPDATE: 4-12-09 / Maxwell, (real name Wayne Saunders), is a true artisan and makes many interesting, decorative and utilitarian items at his forge. / He has just launched his website Ironlord Forge with this photograph on the ‘About’ page. / Check it out! THE LOCATION: / Photographed at the Blacksmith’s forge during the 2009 Timbertown birthday celebrations at Wauchope, NSW, Australia on a great autumn day. THE MAKING of ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer #2’: / There was a lot of hammering of red hot metal happening at the anvils but I spent more time with this bloke as he was in a better position than the others in regard to background and lighting and because he was working on smaller objects he was closer to his work. / Even so I still had to use my pop-up flash at half power for a touch of fill and to help knock out the background. / Fuji S9600: RAW, 1/50sec @ f/3.8, ISO80, Auto focus, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3.
