These two drummers are members of the Hastings District Highland Pipe Band. I made the photograph during a performance on the 2008 Australia Day celebrations on the Town Green in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. This close-up B&W study of a clarinet was photographed during the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club’s invitation visit to one of the Port Macquarie Hastings Municipal Band practice nights. We were asked to make some publicity photographs for the band and had a great time with all the bright shiny things and the very co-operative musicians. The only things special about the shot were that I used manual settings and had my Vivitar DF200 slave flash unit mounted on a bracket on the left side of my camera with the head angled slightly away from the subject. This was set off by my pop-up flash being set to its lowest power and fitted with a diffuser. This selectively colourised clarinet player is Gabrielle. The shot was photographed during the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club’s invitation visit to one of the Port Macquarie Hastings Municipal Band practice nights. We were asked to make some publicity photographs for the band and had a great time with all the bright shiny things and the very co-operative musicians. The only things special about the shot were that I used manual settings and had my Vivitar DF200 slave flash unit mounted on a bracket on the left side of my camera with the head angled slightly away from the subject. This was set off by my pop-up flash being set to its lowest power and fitted with a diffuser. The biggest problem in photographing these people in that setting was the myriad distractions and the close proximity of other band members. Because of that I decided to approach the processing differently by softening the background slightly, converting to B&W then highlighting Gabrielle with the use of selective colouring. Works for me. The Subject: / Three of the saxophone players in the Blue Note Ensemble, part of the Port Macquarie Hastings Municipal Band, performing in a concert. The Location: / The 61st Annual Camden Haven Show held at the Kendall Showground.
