THE LOCATION: / Shot on the Town Green beside the Hastings River in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘Candid Hats in the Oz Day Crowd’: / A difficult photograph to make as I bobbed about trying to get a clear view through the milling crowd but definitely worth the effort. / Fuji S5500: High resolution jpg, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. • THE SUBJECT: / The subject is really the rigging of a 100+yo sailing ship called the ‘Alma Doepel’, a three masted topsail schooner, Australian built. I was just lucky that this young seadog was clambering in the rigging as I was making the shot. / He had been sent aloft by the organisers of the event because one of the official flags was seen to be flying upside down. As that is an international sign of distress, there was a lot of mumbling among the elders to rectify this error quickly. So this ‘Jack Tar’ scampered up the rigging like an old salt, hung the flag right way up and I was there just as he was coming back down. THE LOCATION: / This very “autumn sunset” photograph was taken from the Town Green in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on Australia Day 2006. THE MAKING of ‘Send That Man Aloft!’: / Now the 26th of January happens to be smack in the middle of the heat of summer here in Australia. How did I get this beautiful autumn colouring? / Well, after I passed a copy of my original through Photoshop CS I tried out a few filters from the OptikVerve Lab’s Virtual Photographer free filter plug-in for Photoshop, just to see what they would do. The one that brought about this lovely affect is called ‘Colourise’. So far this is the only image it has work on well enough for me to keep the change! There is nothing wrong with the original. As a matter of fact it looks quite good. But this affect is just so warm and smooth while keeping all the nice sharp detail. / Fuji S5500: High resolution jpg, f/3.1 @ 1/420sec, ISO100, Hand held. / Photoshop CS. • THE SUBJECT: / These hard working pioneers were putting on a demonstration of woodcutting the old way with a crosscut saw. THE LOCATION: / They were photographed at Timbertown, an historical theme park, at Wauchope, west of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on a lovely autumn day. THE MAKING of ‘Colonial Woodcutters’: / As you can see there was a very high dynamic range between shadow and highlights. I tried to combat that by using my Vivitar DF200 slave flash unit slave flash unit at full power, mounted to the camera on a bracket, aimed at the man but there was too much light drop-off due to the distance between us. It still illuminated him well enough but there were many areas of high exposure. So I used that and processed the image to end up as a B&W. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/4.5 @ 1/125sec, ISO80, Low powered pop-up flash to set off Vivitar DSF200 slave unit, Hand held. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS. • Yes folks this IS a real photograph! The only artistic licence I used was to make two exposure copies of the original RAW file and blend them for the final image to look as true to what I saw that evening. We had a great moon in Port Macquarie that evening and I rushed to Flynn’s Beach for a shot of the moon over the rock formation. Talk about photographer’s luck! When I got down on the sand a young woman was perched up on the rock reading a book, posing for her boyfriend. Never one to miss an opportunity, I lined her up with the moon rattled off about 18 shots using different settings and moving the tripod around as the moon shifted. When I loaded them all up on my computer, this first one was the keeper and all the rest went in the virtual rubbish bin. f/8 with 1/4sec at 43mm using the Timer did the trick. As the girl was in front of the moon I focussed on and metered from her. The first RAW exposure was for the foreground, rocks and girl. The second for the moon. I was not interested in getting details of the moon’s surface as that would have made the detail of the girl very hard to see. • THE SUBJECT: / We get tourists and visitors of all sorts in my town and just when I thought I had seen everything from my seat on the old Créma Espresso Bar’s veranda over the previous three years, out of the blue this candid scene appeared before me! THE LOCATION: / They were walking along the Town Green in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia and as it is the place where God rested on the 7th Day maybe it was just a matter of time before we had a visitor from Heaven. THE MAKING of ‘JC Comes to Town’: / A couple of friends and I had spotted this pair when they were first going the other way and we all tried to get a shot with limited success. / However, I spotted them first on their way back later on, made sure I got my shot and then said, “Look at that!” (Well you can’t give all your best shots away). / Fuji S9600: f/5 @ 1/640sec, ISO80. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. • THE SUBJECT: / Here we have Geoff our stand-in model being dusted up by Pam our stand-in make-up artsit. THE LOCATION: / This is a very sneaky candid portrait, shot during one of the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club’s studio nights. THE MAKING of ‘MAKE-UP!’: / My camera was all ready to go when someone called for make-up to get rid of some shine. As soon as I saw this scene before me I could not resist. / All concerned were quite surprised when all the studio lights lit up! / Fuji S5500: RAW, f/8 @ 1/60sec, -1 EC, ISO100, Hand held, Pop-up flash at lowest power and diffused just to set the studio lights off. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS. • Those misty and wet mountains is where we were headed! THE SUBJECT: / A wet, misty and moody Australian landscape, including my Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club mate Rod (fotoman66). / A candid AND a landscape! THE LOCATION: / Photographed along the road to the Willi Willi National Park , up in the mountains far west of Kempsey, NSW, Australia on a very wet and chilly winter day. THE MAKING of ‘Misty Mountain #1’: / I had not realised the difficulty in photographing misty scenes such as this but I soon discovered that even though the light was very low there was still a big problem with the dynamic range due to the clouds. This was actually the first of the series I made and I used Aperture Priority which gave me the slow Shutter Speed. Hand held but with the camera supported on a rear view mirror. / Even though few photographs were made throughout the day due to the weather and time of year, six of us in two 4WDs had a great day out in the bush communing with nature. / One bloke, who has travelled 250,000Km in such road conditions in his 4WD had never had a mishap until the last two times we were out in the wilds. Last time it was a fuel line fracture and a flat tyre. This time it was another fuel line fracture! / Fuji S9600: RAW, f/8 @ 1/34sec, Auto focus, ISO80, Hand held but supported. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. • THE SUBJECT: / Mr Fuji and I were on the prowl for some candid shots when I noticed the shadows which were made by the circling kids on a roundabout flashing over me and along the path. I had never tried anything like this before so it was a real challenge. THE LOCATION: / The photograph was made at the annual agricultural show at Wauchope, NSW, Australia, on a very bright, sunny autumn day at the ”wrong time”. THE MAKING of ‘Life is Just a Merry-Go-Round’: / This one has been sitting in my backlog from my Fuji S5500 days and I have never been able to work out just what to do with it until now. It was shot in B&W and was as flat as a tack so it really did need some digital developing if I was to make something of it. / RAW, 1/1000sec @ f/4, -0.3 EC, ISO100. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. / Oh! And no cropping either! Visit the Candid collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more delightful people pictures. • THE SUBJECT: / No, this is not a staged shot but a truly candid moment that just has to be shown! THE LOCATION: / Two of my Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club mates Peter, Rod and I were on a birding safari up at Boorganna National Park, Comboyne, NSW, Australia, on the third day of spring, a day with a mixture of overcast and sunny skies. THE MAKING of ‘Looking for Me?’: / Peter was as you see him here, spotting for little birdies in the nearby trees with his trusty Nikon D300 and as I watched, this very friendly and fearless Colluricincla harmonica (Grey Shrike-thrush) landed on the picnic table checking out the proceedings. It was a moment that just begged to be photographed so I did! / Fuji S9600: f/5 @ 1/240sec, Manual Focus, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. • THE SUBJECT: / It was cold, it was windy, it was getting late on this winter afternoon and I was about to call it quits and go home. Then I spotted a small family group down the beach a ways so I slowly sauntered down to see what I could see. When I got within a good lens range this inquisitive little kid walked away from his family and stood on the rock, looking into the small rock pool. I saw that, I saw his concentration and I saw the waves behind him and just had to make a shot. THE LOCATION: / The photograph was made on Town Beach in Port Macquarie. • THE SUBJECT: / You have heard the term “Golfing Widows” in reference to the wives of avid golfers. Well these two young women are the surfer’s equivalent. THE LOCATION: / I spotted them from the top of the cliff overlooking Shelley Beach along The Kenny Walk in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, late on a mid-spring afternoon. THE MAKING of ‘Surfing Widows’: / I was watching the surfers on their long boards and when I glanced down I could not help but notice the bright red jacket. I had to scramble down a very steep slope about five meters to get a clear shot and had a heart stopping slip on the way. • THE SUBJECT: / A café scene of a candid couple spending time together (?) on a late spring afternoon. THE LOCATION: / Shot on the veranda at the old Créma Espresso Bar in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘7 Days’: / I was sipping on a [_]>a flat white when I glanced over to the table in the corner and the first thing that hit me was the two sevens. / Quick as a blink I turned the camera on, set the zoom right back, set the aperture wide open, hit the newspaper with auto focus and gave the shutter release a gentle squeeze. / Fuji S9600: f/2.8 @ 1/2000sec, Auto Focus, Camera table supported. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. • THE SUBJECT: / This little girls and her Mum walked right past my table and headed across the road within easy reach of my Fuji’s 300mm. The girl’s spotted dress and matching shoes really caught my eye so I hurriedly readied my camera hoping more pedestrians would not get in the way. Photographer’s Luck was on my side! THE LOCATION: / My favourite caffeine oasis, the Créma Espresso Bar in Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia has moved from its riverside location to a larger premises in the CBD. While this means the end of my riparian candid photography it also means the beginning of some serious street shots as the new Créma is on a main intersection. / This shot was made while I was sitting at an outdoor table with a Nikon shooting Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club mate. • THE SUBJECT: / This little girl just happened to look back as I was training my Fuji her way hoping for something to happen. Not much time to make a shot and I was hoping that the vehicular and pedestrian traffic would ease off just long enough. Photographer’s Luck was on my side! / I could not resist the title. • THE SUBJECT: / There are times when I just can’t hide or when it takes longer to make a shot than at other times. This is when I am at my most vulnerable. Such a thing happened here with the subject couple having well and truly sprung me aiming Milday Fuji their way. Somehow I get the feeling that they are less than enthusiastic about having their photograph taken. / This was as negative as it got. The photographer was not abused verbally ot physically. My smile as they walked by was getting the same icy stare. People are funny! THE LOCATION: / My favourite caffeine oasis, the Créma Espresso Bar in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia has moved from its riverside location to a larger premises in the CBD. THE MAKING of ‘Riveting’: / Because of the great contrast in the scene I set the exposure with a B&W in mind. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/4.9 @ 1/500sec, Continuous focus, ISO80, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. • THE SUBJECT: / This young couple were arm in arm until they reached the pedestrian crossing. He let go but she held on, reassured by his presence. I had my Fuji trained on them from the moment they stepped off the kerb and hoped that no vehicle or people would get in the way. Photographer’s Luck again! THE LOCATION: / My favourite caffeine oasis, the Créma Espresso Bar in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia has moved from its riverside location to a larger premises in the CBD. While this means the end of my riparian candid photography it also means the beginning of some serious street shots as the new Créma is on a main intersection. / This shot was made while I was sitting at an outdoor table with a Nikon shooting Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club mate. We both had a ball! THE MAKING of ‘Reassurance’: / Because of the great contrast in the scene I set the exposure with a B&W in mind. / I decided on a softer, grainy effect for this one as I wanted to emphasise the light and lines rather than crisp detail. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/4.9 @ 1/320sec, Continuous focus, ISO80, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop. • AUTHOR’S NOTE: / I made this shot with no intention of creating controversy. The controversy is already well documented. I simply made a candid shot of some people doing what some people do. THE SUBJECT: / This mother and son walked across the road toward me but I could not see a shot in the making. Then the mother stopped and turned and I noticed the cigarette poking out of her face and her hands cupping a lighter. As quick as I was by the time I focussed and squeezed the trigger she had lit the cigarette and was sucking in the first lung full. I feel that the look on her son’s face reflects the current wider, sane view about smoking. Even the people in the background seem to be wearing looks of disapproval. THE LOCATION: / At the new Créma Espresso Bar on a busy corner in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on an overcast summer day. THE MAKING of ‘Don’t Smoke’: / Shot with my old workhorse the Fuji S5500 with the aperture preset for the exposure I wanted for B&W candids that day: / RAW, f/3.1 @ 1/300sec, Auto focus, ISO64, Hand held. Visit the Candid and B&W and Monochrome collections in my BubbleSite Gallery for more interesting people. UPDATE: 22-1-09 / The photograph you see now is a tighter crop of the original as suggested in critiques from another site. UPDATE: 1-9-09 / This smokin’ street scene has been featured in the This is Relevant Group. Enjoy! CANDID / (Click the links!) Don’t Smoke / 1984 / One Wet Mothers Day #2 / Wet! Wet! • THE SUBJECT: / Another purely candid shot that became much more interesting as I processed it and noticed what was written on the piece of paper the girl is reading – “Role Models”. THE LOCATION: / From my seat outside the new Créma Espresso Bar in the CDB of Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia, on a bright summer day. THE MAKING of ‘Role Models’: / I was just taking a sip from my [_]>a skinny flat white when I spotted this feminine trio crossing the road. Down went the MUG and up came the preset camera and when I saw the girl reading the piece of paper I locked on and hoped like mad that I made a good shot. / Fuji S5500: RAW, f/3.1 @ 1/680sec, ISO64, Hand held with elbows on the table. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshp CS3. • THE SUBJECT: / Two PYBTs (Pretty Young Blond Things) stop to chat with family and friends after shopping at Just Jeans, an almost iconic Aussie clothing chain. THE LOCATION: / Across the road from my favourite caffeine oasis, the new Créma Espresso bar, in the CBD of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘We’ve Just Been to Just Jeans’: / With my preset camera on the table in easy reach I was enjoying a [_]>a skinny flat white when I saw the two girls approach the group. / Down went the coffee mug and up came the camera. I locked the focus on and chose the moment. / I really like all the interaction of all the people in the shot and how the girls are the centre of attention. / Fuji S5500: RAW, f/3.1 @ 1/1000sec, ISO864, Hand held table supported. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. • THE SUBJECT: / This poor girl waited on the corner, hardly moving from that spot, for half an hour for someone who did not turn up. She eventually turned on her heel and walked off to the bus stop. THE LOCATION: / Across the road from my favourite caffeine oasis, the new Créma Espresso Bar, in the CBD of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘Sale’: / I kept my eye on her for most of the time she stood waiting, hoping like mad that she would move out into the light and stand in a position that had the least distractions in the near background. / Eventually she did and with my camera preset I was able to make this shot. / The bonus for me was that trio of boys who stopped to eat ice creams. This added another interesting element to the scene. / Fuji S5500: RAW, Manual settings of f/4.9 @ 1/2000sec, ISO864, Hand held table supported. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3.
