This was taken while sitting in the car. / The blue colouring is from the tint on the top of the windscreen. / The image is actually upside down. Sabbath wrote the following for this image. Check out her works too! The lady in the sky, / Watches over us with observant eyes, / Her breath blows within our hair, / The fiery warmth from her we bear, / But now from within her cloudy throne, / She lays quiet all alone, / Little droplets from her cheeks fall, / Slowly down to share to all / Slipping down on windows and splashing / Images from trees are what her tears are capturing, / The lady in the sky, / Watches over us with observant eyes, / Her tears fall for those below, / And to be captured on the window.
This awesome winter sunset was photographed on Town Beach in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. I had been photographing the rocks at the south end of the beach where the light from the setting sun was painting its way across the seascape when I turned around to go back to my car and saw this. How could I resist? If you look closely at the bottom left corner there is the silhouette of an Oyster Catcher walking around the rocks. This beautiful river scene sunset was photographed from the south bank of the Hastings River at the Boundary Street Ferry Wharf in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia , on a mid-winter’s day. Milady Fuji was sitting high and proud on her tripod, with the White Balance set to Sunny due to the glare from the sky and nearest boat, the ISO to 100 for the good Image Quality and to minimise Noise, and with Spot Metering, Centre Focussing, Continuous Focus and Fast Shooting settings completing the set-up. / I chose the 1/500sec Shutter Speed in Shutter Priority as I had some previous success using this setting on some sunset shots and found it helps control the Exposure very well in these conditions as well as freezing any motion quite well. / (Fortunately it froze the flying Pelican. Can you spot him?) :) / After an earlier test shot under the same conditions and a check of the Histogram, I found I did not need any Exposure Compensation. / After I set the Timer to 2 seconds, I pre-focussed on the brightest area on the nearest boat, framed the shot, locked the tripod, squeezed the trigger and after the “Beep! Beep! Beeeeep! Kachunk!” … here it is! Visit the Sunrise-Sunset collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more delightful sunset scenes. THE SUBJECT: / Here we have a nice set of Actinotus helianthus (Flannel Flower) basking in the mid-afternoon sun on a warm Spring day. THE LOCATION: / The shot was made whilst on a wildflower hunt with a couple of Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club friends along the Flower Bowl Walk in the Kattang Nature Reserve at Dunbogan, south of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING OF ‘Flannel Flower Lampshades’: / The photograph has been purposely under exposed by taking the metering directly from the brightest flower to show the full affect of the sunlight on the petals of the open flowers, making them look like lamps with inverted lampshades. / What I really like about the final result is the wonderful natural composition of the flower head, the clarity of detail and of course that glorious light. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/3.7 @ 1/400sec, Auto focus, ISO80, Hand held. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS. These two dedicated and undaunted rock fishermen were photographed from Tacking Point, at Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on a sunny winter afternoon. The swell was perfect for this kind of break and the anglers were in good position to be on intersecting “Rule of Thirds” lines for a good composition. The break was way more than I had hoped for and the winter afternoon light was magic. I found this tiny little amphibian in a delicate pink rose blossom in the garden of a Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club. friend at Kundabung , just south of Kempsey, NSW, Australia, on a BBQ and photography day in autumn. The ‘Pretty in Pink’ li’l poser sat quite well for this portrait and was most patient as I jostled about trying to get the best angle, light and exposure. My subject is a very fine specimen of Litoria fallax (Eastern Dwarf Tree Frog) , quite a common species along the eastern coast of this wide brown land. After a long very wet summer they could be found in great abundance around the rather extensive property and I had a great time hunting around for good subjects. An amazing fact I discovered recently was that these frogs can also be brown or a mixture of green and brown and can change their colour depending on their environment. This very large bird with the goofy look is an Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) , one of Australia’s icons. / The Emu shares pride of place on the Australian Coat of Arms with a Kangaroo. (The reason a Kangaroo and Emu are depicted on our national symbol is that they can’t walk backwards). This dippy Emu was photographed during the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club’s Christmas party at the Billabong Koala Sanctuary at Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, in very early Summer 2006. These are NOT very easy subjects to photograph as they are constantly on the move pacing up and down with their heads bobbing around. As my old Fuji S5500 is not renowned for his focusing speed, my frustration was beginning to show after about half an hour but persistence paid off in the end. Those curly bits on top of its head which add to the goofy expression are new feathers which have not fully developed. THE SUBJECT: / A misty, moody Australian bush scene was photographed along an old logging track seems slightly primordial. THE LOCATION: / In the wilds of the Willi Willi National Park , up in the mountains far west of Kempsey, NSW, Australia on a very wet and chilly winter day. / This view in the opposite direction to Into the Mist #1 . THE MAKING of ‘Into the Mist #1’: / I had not realised the difficulty in photographing misty scenes such as this but I soon discovered that even though the light was very low there was still a big problem with the dynamic range. Aperture Priority did not work for me here so I opted for Shutter Priority, 1/60sec being the slowest speed recommended for a hand held shot. With the mist being so close, the resulting f/3.7 kept the background nice and soft. / Even though few photographs were made throughout the day due to the weather and time of year, six of us in two 4WDs had a great day out in the bush communing with nature. / One bloke, who has travelled 250,000Km in such road conditions in his 4WD had never had a mishap until the last two times we were out in the wilds. Last time it was a fuel line fracture and a flat tyre. This brilliant, delicate little wildflower, no bigger than an Aussie 50c piece is a very fine example of Thysanotus tuberosus (Common Fringe Lily). Found and photographed in gorgeous light in a tiny clearing beside a track at Diamond Head, part of Crowdy Bay National Park, Laurieton, south of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia on a fine spring morning. In this area the flowers grow in thick native grasses and throwing out the background was very difficult. The only way I could do it was to fit the +10dioptre screw-on Macro Lens to the camera, set the camera to Super Macro Mode and get in as close as I physically and optically could using Manual Focus. I feel the sharp angles of the blurred blades of grass in the background support the hard angles of the thinner petals of the flower. The Location: / A very tight, isolated corner at the rear of my home in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. The Subject: / Seemingly suspended in mid-air this marvellous specimen of a female Deinopis subrufa (Net Casting Spider) was all set up with her net for a night’s hunting when I found her just before sunset on a very grey, damp summer day. / The spider’s location and orientation made it extremely difficult for me to make a good shot but with some patience, perseverance and experimentation using the fence post to brace the camera, I finally made a couple of shots for my collection. / The shot was made looking down at an angle with the camera rotated to the portrait format so as to end up with the subject’s orientation in the shot.. / The ambient light reflecting back from the white fence post gave the subject a beautiful modelling light. The Location: / On the grounds of a Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club friend’s property at the sleepy little community of Kundabung , just south of Kempsey, NSW, Australia. The Making of ‘Bend Over backwards’: / I spotted him deep inside the green, cool leaves and stems of a clump of Agapanthus. / Even though the frog was in a patch of bright light its right side was in shadow hence the pop-up flash with the 1/200sec shutter speed. / As I slowly and carefully worked my camera deeper into the foliage to get as close as I could, he turned his front feet inward and bent backwards so far, the skin on his back wrinkled! I knew he was ready to jump so I quickly focussed and made the shot. / As soon as I moved again he was off, leaping even deeper into cover. / Fuji S9600: Macro, Manual settings of f/3.8 @ 1/2000sec, ISO100, Manual focus, Pop-up flash at lowest power, Hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3.
