During a relatively peaceful 2002 protest against the World Bank in Washington, D.C., anti-war demonstrators began to change the situational climate of the march. Tensions between protesters and police, who were expecting a violent demonstration, began to rise. Police began to arrest everyone that they managed to surround inside Pershing Park, guilty, as well as innocent bystanders alike. In relative anticipation of the police’s reaction, this young man wrote the telephone numbers of civil defense lawyers on his arms before the demonstrations even began.

Dear all. The gift we would like to create in memory of Axel Moore, and in support of the family of a large canvas print of this photo / / taken by Bill Fonseca can now be made. thank you all for your generosity. It is warmly received. Redbubble will contact people individually and facilitate through paypal. / ___________ update 31.12.07 Paypal donations. There are a number of unexpected expenses the family has incurred due to the event, such as the Careflight helicopter coming out, and time off work. These things put an added pressure on a family at times such as these. I have looked into paypal, and it seems it is easy to do if you have the email address, which is family@origoblue.com.au and sign up to paypal here All ways of contributing to the family are greatly appreciated, and really make a difference to their lives. It is a really positive way to help someone when you’re not sure ‘what you can do”-here another way. Thank you all for your generosity. ____________ Nothing will bring Axel back, however, the memory of the community support is the glue that binds us to this earth and each other. The ceremony today was an inspiration to the human spirit. It was touching, it was real and the love people offer just by their presence, I’m sure will help console the family in the smallest of ways in this huge time of change. I know so many people would like to do something ‘real’ to help. If this is you, please feel free to contribute in this way now. kind regards to all. xsunset

Tensions between protesters and police, who were expecting a violent demonstration, started to rise. Police began to arrest everyone that they managed to surround inside Pershing Park, guilty, as well as innocent bystanders alike. These demonstrators were pulled from the crowd, handcuffed and thrown on an awaiting Metro bus. No one was read their rights as bystanders looked on in horror.

I couldn’t resist shooting this. I had forgotten how much support for the Left there is in Italy. I shot his with my Mamiya C3. Itook several shots of the marchers, and they looked promising. Unfortunately I must have inadvertently moved the shutter-speed dial in the excitement because all f the other shots had serious movement bur.

Veterans of the U.S. military take to the streets in Washington, D.C. to demonstrate and show their support for the government after war was declared in Iraq. Anti-war protesters marched in opposition to the engagement and heavily outnumbered the pro-war supporters. This pro-war demonstrator exchanges words with some of the opposition in this photograph. A human police barricade separated the two.

London, 1994 – March against the Criminal Justice and Public Order Bill 1994 – a mixed bag of legislative provisions – primarily the marchers were protesting against proposed restrictions to the rights of association, rights to gather and protest, some for proposed changes to the long established principle of right to silence for suspects in police stations.. all in all it was seen as a heavy handed attempt by a failing government to win voters by criminalising the youth rave culture prevalent at the time. The march was attended by hundreds of thousands of people from all over the UK. It was generally a very good natured, well-behaved affair, with a minor press-friendly staged attempt to force its way into Downing Street. The police presence was huge. This photograph was amongst many i took with a point and shoot – the background advertising board was what i wanted to capture – most people wil have heard of or seen the tv drama detective programme ‘The Sweeney’ made in the 70’s – a real rough no-nonsense crime drama set in London. The stars were two cops played by John Thaw and Denis Waterman, and here they were, as they would love to have been in all their wonderful political incorrectness.. shoving their guns in the faces of the marchers and yelling “You’re Nicked”.

Demonstrator at the Anti Criminal Justice and Public Order Bill March, London 1994 This may look disrespectful – at the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier, a protestor attempts to place a placard in the hand of the stature of the soldier – i felt that the marchers pretty much embodied a belief similar to that the soldiers themselves always believed they were fighing for.. freedoms at home, as opposed to whatever spurious political motives may be behind most wars.

I gather that demonstrations have now been banned from Trafalagar Square (risk of guided missiles aimed at the House of Commons, you know, if you can blast through thirty other buildings first). Here is a happy souvenir of the days when freedom of speech was still legal.
