Officially the civil war has ended in Congo. Sadly, in reality, this is untrue. Militias ravage villages, raping women, abducting young men for combat, dismembering the population and creating massive displacement. Everyday. Those who make it to Goma live amongst the lava infused earth, a result of a massive eruption two years ago. Water and food are scarce, homes are built of mud or flattened food tins. These kids live and play amongst trucks half swallowed by lava.
This woman sells shoes. She displays her wares on her head and in this instance she had stopped to talk with another ‘shoe woman.’ I loved the way she responded to my delighted laugh by having a genuine chuckle back. You don’t always see nice things in Congo. It makes the magic even more precious. CALENDAR OUT NOW. And there’s a trucker cap. / Hey, doin’ good needn’t mean you can’t be cool at the same time. A wierd contradiction happens in Africa. People are so very poor, the only clothes they can get are those given away by charity or sold for a pittance by second hand dealers. Such organisations or traders get their clothes ultimately from the charity bins you and I donate to. Therefore people living in abject poverty wear outfits with brand names emblazoned on them such as: Timberland, Nike or Ralph Lauren. The same names people in the west pay a lot for. Ironic? Yes. Amusing? Yes a little. I came across this beautiful young girl in the ruins of broken lava, homelessness and chaos. She was wearing a light blue dress and carrying a burberry hand bag. Classic. As with ‘Burberry girl’ looks can be deceiving. Beauty in poverty hits you between the eyes in Africa. This was taken in the Democratic Republic of Congo. If you have seen the film ‘Blood Diamond’ then you will have a good understanding of what it’s like in D.R. Congo. The film was sadly accurate. – Dog photography – Africa photography / - Beach photography - Black & white photography
This woman is a victim of a seemingly never ending war in southern congo. She has suffered sexual violence (rape) so severe it has rendered her incontinent. She now exists purely as a result of a courageous charity called Heal Africa, and indeed her own inner strength and faith. I asked her if I could take her portrait and she stood up (which must have been painful), straightened her back and stared straight down the lens. No stopping to straighten her scarf, no preening, no fear. Just an honesty so raw, so uninhibited and so rare, I caught my breath and thought I’d never breath again. I was totally overpowered by her intensity. After I took the shot and showed it to her she smiled and thanked me. It still gives me a shiver to look at it now. HEAL Africa calendar available now!!! These kids are unreal. look at them! They have found a disused iron bar in amongst the lava chunks in Goma, Congo – and they have fashioned into a ‘skipping rope.’ Look at the joy on their faces. Especially the little bloke on the left. Even the girl in the wheelchair is smiling. This is the kind of happiness that takes your breath away. I shot a few of the same scene. They loved it and couldn’t wait to see themselves in the screen on my digital camera. Buy this in any form and the profits go to the Hospital they were playing at.
Sometimes beauty is in itself defiance.
300 million in sub-Saharan Africa, live on less than $2/day, more than double the level 20 years ago, and having gone up by around 100 million over the last 10 years. Nearly two-thirds of people who have AIDS live in sub-Saharan Africa. 90 percent of the world’s daily 3,000 malaria deaths occur here. One-third of boys and one-half of girls do not complete high school on the subcontinent. Two-thirds of the poorest countries in the world are in Africa. 34 of the 35 states with the lowest life expectancy are in Africa. The Democratic Republic of Congo is twice the size of Britain, France and Germany, but with only 500 km of paved roads. Over 4 million people were killed during the war of 1998-2003, but the conflict had actually begun even earlier. Maman Jeanne Banyere and her husband, Prosper Mulengetsi, began their mercy mission in Masisi (in the mountains northwest of Goma) in 1996. Prosper directed a secondary school at the time, where Jeanne taught. Their ministry of compassion began with one four-month old orphan. People noticed and began dropping off other war orphans. Their centre of compassion grew. In 1998 while Maman Jeanne attended a national women’s conference in Kinshasa, Rwandan soldiers attacked Masisi. Prosper fled with 60 orphans. As fighting intensified, Prosper and the children slipped deeper into the forest. He happened across a band of pygmies, outcasts in the Congo. The pygmies fed and cared for Prosper and his orphans for six months. Maman Jeanne and Prosper then relocated their orphanage to Goma in 1999 and were adopted by HEAL Africa. They have successfully placed 70 orphans with foster families. Eighty orphans still remain under their care. Even in 2007 in DR Congo, 1,200 people still die every day from hunger, disease or violence. Over 50% of them are children. You can support Maman Jeanne’s through their child sponsorship program or by supporting the ministry directly. www.cnecpi.com ALL PROFITS OF SALE TO CHARITY.

We had just been talking with some of the patients at the hospital in Goma, DR Congo. Every now and then my friend Rebecca Zachariah would dissapear. She’s a Doctor so I figured she was off to see a patient. Well she was but not just for medical reasons. Bec had bought a whole lot of stuffed toys from home. Squeezed them into her pack somehow. Then during the trip, she would nick off quietly every now and then and present a little child with a furry friend. No fanfare. She didn’t even tell me until half way through the trip. These kids hardly have any clothes and certainly have little food. In the case of this gorgeous little girl the only thing we were sure she had was polio. Well at the very least after we left she had a furry bear as well. And do you think she was going to let go of it? Not in a hurry :) This photo is the November shot in the HEAL Africa calendar. – Dog photography – Africa photography / - Beach photography - Black & white photography – Dog photography – Africa photography / - Beach photography - Monotone photography
These people had been run out of their village by militia and had just returned when we arrived in North Kivu province Democratic Republic of Congo. They are just some of the millions of displaced Congolese driven by fear of the horrific crimes carried out by the roaming militias. When we arrived it was chaos. People return to homes that no longer exists, and victims who are no longer as they were. HEAL Africa has started an initiative whereby the leaders of these communities from Muslim, Christian and indigenous religious groups come together to try and rebuild the community. Yep that’s right a Christian group working with others in a non judgmental socially progressive way. I just had to point that out :)
Inspiration and basic shot by me. Styling both hair and image courtesy of shawhouse. This kicks off the political series “Half Baked Politics in the United States.” That is if you don’t count the sheep image.
Barack Obama Rally. Seattle Center-Key Arena. Campaigning for the Democratic Party nomination.
So I’m so sick of these Republicans, fucking up the US! A few weeks ago this commercial came on the TV and I knew what I had to do! I say, “Fuck Politics, they didn’t get into their positions, by being honest and hard working!” I took this pic with the Panasonic LUMIX, DC VARIO, 7.2 Mega Pixel, 3x Zoom.
I just couldn’t let this one slip by. / The Republicans are doing such a good job sabotaging themselves, that I’m beginning to wonder if they’re tired of all this shit too. Maybe they finally decided that the economy was bad enough that even they know we need a Democrat in office to clean up after their mess. Feel free to use this photo anywhere you want. /
Just getting back to photojournalism. / My first love :)
The year is 2008 the location is the United States of American the event the election for the Presidency of the United States the date November 4, 2008. Governor Sarah Barracuda Palin of Alaska is the root’n toot’n running mate selected for John Maverick McCain by the extreme Republican Fascist Neocons and the right wing evangelical fundamentalist religious nut jobs…can you get your head wrapped around anyone calling himself a Maverick and his sidekick Sarah Barracuda…if elected this will be The Bush Third Term and Armageddon is just an atomic bomb away…be afraid be very afraid…if you thought George Bush was less than intelligent….John McCain and Sarah Palin are the classic “Dumb and Dumber.” Republican fascism ushered in by George Bush et al just may be extended. The American electorate “is ignorant” they voted BushCo twice and they just might elect another BushCo Republican the Original Maverick and Sarah Barracuda just a hockey mom….no one could have written this surreal scenario and only in America. / Governor Sarah Barracuda Palin kills and guts moose herself, brags about moose burgers and on her salary no doubt she has to hunt to put food on the table….why shop at the supermarket when you can have an adrenal rush the thrill of the kill. Sarah Palin also wants the polar bears off the endangered species list; she sued the American Federal Government to have them removed. Who is Governor Sarah Palin you really need to find out about her position on woman’s rights, foreign affairs, the economy, the environment, religion. One thing for sure Sarah Palin “I Kill Animals” is a fact. / In Alaska hunters fly in planes and shoot wolves and are offered $150 for the wolves’ legs without the pelt, the pelt is worth from $200 to $300. Sarah Barracuda is an avid hunter and has participated in the killing of wolves from a helicopter a more steady aircraft to maximize the kill than an airplane. Not enough wolves have been killed this year and with the cost of fuel the state of Alaska may even pay for the fuel. Animals are slaughtered, tuna for sushi, seals clubbed for pelts, whales, elephants, tigers, wolves the list is endless some try to justify this…others just don’t care they kill to kill. / Sarah Palin is an extreme fundamentalist evangelical Christian and John McCain hums “bomb bomb bomb Iran” John McCain may be The Manchurian Candidate life is stranger than fiction. Do your due diligence search the web will you be surprised.
What better way to celebrate Mr. Obama’s win than with a nice cheezy caricature! http://jeffreyphillips.com.au
