University students’ demonstration took place on May 2, 2007 at the entrance to Tel-Aviv University, just opposite my house. University students, who were on strike for 21 days, came out to express their opposition to a committee set up in order to push through its agenda of raising university tuition. I had a great view from my appartment on the 6th floor.

Security outside the Houses of Parliament, London In the United Kingdom and some other Commonwealth countries, the majority of police officers do not routinely carry firearms. This originates from the formation of the Metropolitan Police in the nineteenth century, when police were not armed, partly to counter public fears and objections concerning armed enforcers. However, the Ministry of Defence Police, Civil Nuclear Constabulary and Police Service of Northern Ireland (formerly the Royal Ulster Constabulary) are issued firearms as a matter of routine. Every territorial police force has a number of officers who are routinely armed in units generally called Armed Response Vehicles. Certain specialist squads, such as the Flying Squad, Special Branch, Diplomatic Protection Group, Royalty Protection Branch, and officers protecting airports along with government buildings, are routinely armed. The British Transport Police does not have any armed officers of its own, relying on the assistance of the local territorial police force should an armed incident occur on the railways. I admit, I feel a little proud every time I see someone on Facebook join a group dedicated to a social/political issue. It’s nice to know that some people care about the world we live in. But there are still a lot of apathetic people out there.

Hadramawt – Yemen / In rural communities in Yemen, all the adults regularly meet to discuss questions of the civil society (equipment, schools, roads, hospitals, etc.) like in any municipality of our countries. Women are consulted as well as men and they all vote individually about the decisions to take. The day of the community assembly is a big occasion for these women who can speek their voices in public and would not miss their chance by any way !
