Release notes - Bulk Deleteting BubbleMail and a Preview of the RedBubble Private Site

Hello! Another week another RedBubble release. This week there’s a couple of new things – the ability to bulk delete BubbleMail and a sneak preview of a the RedBubble ‘private site’. The private site is designed to allow you to create a site showcasing just your work. The thinking behind the private site is that RedBubble needs to evolve into a much more dynamic website. Everyone wants different things from RedBubble. Some folks are here for the learning, some are here to sell, some are here for the positive feedback, some are here to be entertained. Et cetera. We’re never going to be able to create one static site that satisfies all needs, so over the next little while we’re going to evolve RedBubble into a much more dynamic site that people can tailor and adapt to suit their needs. The private site is still a few weeks away from public release, but we’ve got a very very early beta product ready for today and I’ll like to show you all an example and ask for your feedback. The example site can be found here and I’d particularly value general feedback on the new configuration menu which appears to the right of the large images (the menu is still a work in progress) and the options you’d like to see us offer in the private site as we build it out over the next couple of weeks. And finally we stumbled across this review of RedBubble a couple of days ago. We love these reviews and they’re great for improving the Google rank of RedBubble and all the work on RedBubble. So if you feel like writing about RedBubble please ‘go nuts’. The more links back to RedBubble the better. You might also want to check out all the tools for linking to RedBubble available here. Have a great week! Peter

Over the last few days we have had a number of instances where bubblers have decided to use Bubblemail for a bit of up-close-and-dirty personal attacks (all of course from the cowardly distance of relatively anonymous email). This is not on. We will suspend or delete the accounts of those who can’t behave in a civilized fashion in the Bubbleworld. Basic rule is be no less polite to those on RedBubble than you would be if you met them in person at a nice party. And if you are the sort of person who gets drunk and abuses people at parties – then behave as you know you should not as you know you do. And if you can’t or won’t behave politely expect to be bounced out of the party for good. Please report any abuse and we will act.

Portfolio Clean Out - Your Vote Counts

I’m looking for nominations of what to cull out of my portfolio, I have my eye on a fair bit of my earlier work which well for me isn’t up to scratch. My difficult is I find myself to be my toughest critic so I’d like to open this up to anyone that wants to name any images they think don’t belong, I’ll compare that to my own list and then let the culling begin. I currently have 75 works for sale and I don’t know that feels like too much so I’m looking to cullt 10-25 at a guess, that said I don’t want to be like a overzealous gardener and prun it back to hard. So feel free to jump in and nominate any number of shots to go up onto the chopping block, if a image has already been nominated still list it as more votes will spell doom for the image in question.

Deleting/Blocking Comments

Just throwing an idea around in here before sticking this in a forum. How do you think it would go down if artists had the ability to delete ANY comments made on their artwork at their discretion and bypassing any offical reporting procedure? A more extreme version of this is blocking particular members from commenting on any of your work in cases of say, creepy or pervy vibes. My thinking is that it would allow artists to ‘draw the line’ on the tone of comments found acceptable by the individual. Recently I got a few comments that I’d rather not have had visible to the whole wide world that were not ‘bad enough’ to report. They were more a refelection of the commenter than of my work and it would have been nice to delete them so as to encourage more of the mature and constructive comments I was also getting and really appreciating. Would allowing artists to do this create other problems? How well does it work on other sites? I’m just curious as to what other people think of this.

STOP AND THINK before deleting work....

Hi All!! Just a quick note to say that I am making my way through my huge list of favourite’s at the moment, buying your pieces of works as either cards/tees/prints. I’ve noticed some have been deleted or removed at some point or another (which I have done myself in my own portfolio previously). Is a pity, cos I hadn’t yet gotten to purchase that fave piece of yours!! So I just thought I’d say a “HANG ON A MINUTE GUYS!” before deciding that a piece of work you’ve perhaps had little or no sales from, gets deleted from your portfolio. Some of us have just taken awhile to get our butts into gear. Especially me, with low income ATM. I figure if I can spend a few bucks a fortnight buying wonderful works, then before I know it I’ll have a wonderful little collection that I slowly but surely built, all the while supporting my fellow friends/artists around me. Perhaps this is something you yourself should think about to??? It’s all about supporting one another here at RB, don’t you think??? Anyway, love to see all the new works popping up, especially from OS. Have a great day Kids!!! Bel xxx

What Makes You Think Your Art is Good Enough?
by Stephen MitchellWhat makes you think your art is good enough to upload to RedBubble? 1 Gut instinct? / This is the best way to know if your art, ...
What makes you think your art is good enough to upload to RedBubble? 1 Gut instinct? / This is the best way to know if your art, writing, or photography is good. For photographers, we simply know when the shot matches what we were trying to achieve. For writers, it’s when we write from the heart. For artists, and I mean people who manipulate binary-pixels as much as I mean painters etc, I imagine you know when your art has reached its point where it cannot be modified any further without ruining it. That’s right, ruining the final result. / Gut instinct tells you when you have just reached that pinnacle and achieved the art you imagined in the first place or saw through the view-finder. 2 Did someone in your family like the shot? / Trust me, I know from bad experience that relying on the opinion of family (to tell me what makes a GREAT shot) is never a good idea. As much as they believe in your artwork, they cannot see through your eyes. / I only upload a few distinctly better shots to RedBubble out of every few hundred. I might shoot between twenty and a hundred photographs from the one location, but I know almost immediately if it was a good shot or not. On occasion I only have to take one shot to get THAT shot, the one that gets shown to you, my friends and my family. What makes you think your art is good enough to have printed? 1. You received 1,000 ‘Oh, Nice!’ Comments ? / Nope, this is not a good enough reason. Your art needs to be an extension of who you are. Despite what you see here on RedBubble, your art should not be a popularity contest, nor a multitude of ‘nice’ comments. Much as I enjoy getting a few nice words about my work, I’ve recently learned that unless the person actually says something constructive, unique and interesting about the actual photograph … the comment may just be a stock answer to everything they see here. NOTE: OK, so sometimes it can be difficult to put into words what you like about some one else’s art, but at least say something unique. Yes, my photography of flowers have DOF, POV, macro-detail, lots of colour and are ‘hot’, ‘cool’, ‘wow’, and ‘whippitycrack’. Now tell me WHY you like it, WHAT it is that makes it good and HOW many you are going to purchase! :D 2. Only you can know if your art is worth selling on RedBubble. / Do you think someone would purchase it as a card? Or are you just showing off an image that you want others to consider before you commit to it? Ok, so we all do that occasionally. I’m not saying it’s wrong to upload the incomplete and unfinished, but this is RedBubble. It’s not just a community, forum and friend-making location: It’s an online print-shop. 3. Don’t be concerned with anyone’s opinion before presentation. / Upload those few shots you really believe capture what you were attempting. If you really believe the art is good, show it to the RedBubble world the whole internet. Because everyone online and offline is now going to see you and your art. RedBubble is a name, not a fortified location. Our comments, words, suggestions, responses, queries and ‘drool’ will be carbon copied across the planet and archived on the “WWW” Today I shot 5GIG of photographs in 5 hours. / I had a day in the Adelaide CBD, revisiting previous locations, visiting a few new places and discovering new things at each location that I did not see the first time! This added up to around 1,000 photographs. / ... I’ll be the first to admit that less than 200 are any good. / ... Less than 60 are very good. / ... I’ve uploaded only TWO of them to RedBubble. I might add a few more. / ... SEVEN have been loaded to my flickr gallery . All are getting lots of traffic, with very few comments. Just the way I like it. Each of those photographs got some pixel-manipulation. Yes, I do, when necessary. Each of those photographs were one of a several exactly the same … but I decided that one would serve the purpose I was looking for. / I didn’t ask anyone on RedBubble or Flickr if they would like to see it : I made that decision while perusing them on my 500GIG HD. A lot were shot purely because I like architecture, but many were shot because I figured they’d look good as a card or framed image. One of them is a test-image, to see the response/traffic rate. See if you can pick it. 4. Would you delete or replace a photograph if enough people said they didn’t like it? / Seeing as how so many of us rely on the comments of others to fulfill our online life, IF someone was to suggest a fault, change, modification or complete make-over of your art work, would you? I believe I might change an image. I have certainly changed my opinion on pixel-manipulation! I know I’d delete an image, but only from the RedBubble-database. I’ve done that several times. Where’s your thoughts on this? You’ll notice I rarely make comments on other people’s art. There is a LOT of great work on RedBubble. I just don’t have the time to tell you. Anyhow, you know your work is good. Or you would never have taken the time to put it on RedBubble …. right?

oK, today im gonna concentrate on deleting some of my stuff.. The ones that dont have comments will go first i suppose, i will be starting from the last page.. / Im seeing/hearing too much .. that i have ‘too much’ :( I dont like to think that my stuff is ‘overwhelming’ anyone. / / So now im gonna wade thru my tooMuchness and delete the OK/so-so pics, and the good pics and just leave the great ones? How i am going to differentiate them is ummm.. by the comments? Which means if anyone has favourited any of my pics that doesnt have comments, i cant tell.. dropping some of the prices So yah..hmm.. and then some i will reupload into my ARTDICTIVE account (cards and small size wallart only). And im gonna try my bestest to only upload no more than 3 new stuff each time.. Agggh.. Im gonna have to go and find somewhere else to post my stuff, cuz if i only put a few a day, i would have a backlog of photos that wil keep me busy till im 90 years old! Im serious! Im a photophile – im a GOOD photophile :) I also been questioning whether i should put the Psytrance photos in a different account? OOh when will we have subsets/catergories and all dat here… anyways.. back to da cleaning up.. updates : 5.30pm – 936 (all images) 6.32pm – 877 (all images) 7.30pm – 835 (all images) 8.30pm – 793 (all images) 9.30PM – 780 (all images) 10.00pm – 770 (all images) this is as minimum i can get it to, today.. ive deleted 166 items out of my portfolio, does my bum still look big? :P :P update#2 i registered Ozdoof in RB tonite, and have started to move the photos thats in here, that are without comments – into the OzdoofRedBubble portfolio. Yep, me will put most of the Psytrance pix over there – but still have some here, only some.. the special ones.. to entice you to go and see more..there. Where? There is HERE or you lost already? hahahaha :D

Hi Kids :) / Just a quick note-you may or may not have noticed sum works of mine have been taken off. Some are definite fave’s of people, so I thought I’d better write why. / With my exhibition coming up in September (with Scotty Robinson) I/We had not fully decided on what works to show…..and sum we had that we were already showing-we thought best to rip them down and let people wait for the exhibition to see them in all their glory!!! / So until then there will be a little hole in my gallery (which is about to be filled with ALL NEW WORK!!!) and those old faves will make a return after the exhibition, towards the end of the year. / Bel x

In some parts of the city people are not open. I would hesitate to go there to take street photos. Anyway, sometimes the candid shot failed and the subjects noticed me. But no one gave me trouble, ESPECIALLY GIRLS. I always delete those failed shots, but left several. It was intended to take a photo of girls who work in Beijing. They were carrying their luggages to a department store. The two girls on the right saw me.

. . . what to delete and what to keep in your portfolio? I keep adding new stuff and getting rid of stuff that has very few views and that nobody comments on. lol The problem I have with this method, though, is that I’m beginning to rely on input from everyone else, rather than just remaining true to what I think is ‘great art’, even if noone else sees it the same way. What I’m trying to say/ask is how do you find that balance between pleasing others and pleasing yourself, as an artist? I feel bad for deleting stuff that I really loved just because I was/am a comment pig. Any ideas how to find the balance? Hope you all know what I mean. lol

I think it’s time. I have 12 pages. Too many! / My plan…......I will move the least commented images to the top for a few days. / If they still have less than 10 comments by the end of those days, they will be deleted. / Sounds like a good plan to me. / XO-Leah

After much consideration, I have removed 10 pages of my artwork. I felt that it was way too crowded with mediocre pieces and I will try to keep it down to 3 pages. My apologies to any who had favoured some of my stuff that I have deleted. :) x

The best advantage of displaying our artistic abilities on Redbubble is getting critiqued by artists we revere, treat as mentors, or learn from their artistic style. But I fear some people are confusing constructive critique and cyber-bullying ... they are far different things. If someone should happen to say “Your work is awful!”, you may find it’s merely the limited vocabulary of someone who really meant to say “You don’t understand that Redbubble is in the business of selling work, not displaying your dog’s water bowl, your work would be better suited for some where like, say, oh, I don’t know … maybe flickr.com. They like that sort of thing.” Those of you who respond to this with “Who gave anyone the right to be judge and jury of my art?” ... You gave them that ‘right’ when you uploaded it to the internet. If you consider the advice (ie, constructive critique of your art-work, either for its merit, composition, camera-style and/or saleability) to be arrogance, you are looking at it from all the wrong angles. Yes, there will be a few comments that may well be a tad aggressive, we’ve all experienced that. But at the end of the day, someone will have something to say about the images you upload to your gallery. Unless you turn off commenting, people are always going to have an opinion, even if misinformed, incomprehensible, and rude. It is most unfortunate when comments are misinterpreted as rude. Maybe they were. There are two options here, but only one is good: / 1. Bitch back, be rude back at them, get angry, tell everyone, make a biggggg deal of it. / 2. Read it a few times. Change the emphasis on each word. Determine if there was any other way it could have been said. Find something in it that helps you. If that doesn’t work, and I’d be surprised if it didn’t: Ignore and delete the comment. / ‘Nuff said.

I thought, I’d follow the lead of a few others with the ‘spring cleaning’ theme. So, in the next couple of weeks, I’ll be removing some of my work which I feel I don’t need and nobody wants to see. Votes for what should go, and votes (including counter-votes) for what should stay would be much appreciated, just so I can get the feeling of what people like of my stuff. Love you all. (Or maybe I’m just tired.) Locky.

At some point this weekend I’ll be taking down either my photos or digital work and creating a new account with one or the other. Just wanted to let my friends know what’s up when half my folio disappears. For the group hosts: I’ll be leaving some of the groups and reposting my images if that’s OK. I will refresh my memory as to number of images that can be posted in specific time frames. If anyone has a problem, please let me know. Thanks, and have a great day!

I deleted well over a hundred of my images from RB yesterday, and I’m planning on deleting two more every day until I have about 20 really good ones left in my portfolio. Things were just getting too crowded. It was easy, too. I just looked at each image and asked myself “would anyone ever want to buy this?”. For the most part, the answer is no, so out it goes. The ones I’m leaving for now are either fairly new, or have sold, or I like them particularly. RedBubble is also indirectly responsible for my migration back to my own website and blog. Pre-loading of images on pages that I haven’t even clicked on will have a huge impact on my limited bandwidth, so I’m not surfing the bubble anymore. It’s sad. But at least I’m working to make my my own blog and site more interesting again, which is all for the good. I don’t want to leave here entirely, but it seems I’m being forced to cut back. Ah well, nothing this good could last ;)

Hello and good evening Bubblers It’s been a busy first day home, went to watch the sunrise, wasn’t too successful as rather cloudy. The sun made a brief appearance today. Stopped at my Mum’s on the way home for a coffee and toast and to catch up on the week just passed. Mum’s not too well at the moment, so I spent some time with her before going home to the chores. Finished those and have now been working on my photos, so many but before I can download them I have to go through what I already have and be ruthless and delete, delete, delete to free up some space for new photos. Have a great Sunday fellow Bubblers and don’t forget to put your clocks back tonight fellow Brits.

Hey fellow Bubblers I ask with regards to my image Dark Skies. 2 ppl kindly favoured it but I want to replace it with a re-worked and in my opinion much better version. I didnt want to get into a situation where my pf is has too many “Title” 2 ’s. To that end Im letting you know that in 24 hours from now i’ll be replacing it with the new version. If the2 bubblers strongly object to the deletion I will upload as Dark Skies 2. Paul
