I thought this photo really showed the different defense and offense moves of the teams. If you look the photo over closely you will see an offensive player and defense player about ready to go head to head. Another area there is an offensive player about to pull the shirt off the a defensive player. Lots of football action going on in this photo.

We watched two of these beautiful birds aggressively defend their perfectly sized hole from other birds also looking for a place to stay. The couple would go after birds twice their size either together (to get a stubborn one moving) or alone (to keep a moving one moving faster). These are the first two I’ve seen and I was helped with the identification utilizing the aid of a field guide by John Muir Laws. The sun was setting so the white balance is actually correct, looking rather warm. The location was the riparian wetlands of West Sacramento along the Sacramento River.

Adults can grow to 18 cm (7 in) and their skin has a warty appearance and ranges from green to brown. As a defense against predators they secrete a toxic, foul tasting substance called bufagin. This is enough to deter many predators although Grass Snakes and hedgehogs are . Common Toads eat invertebrates such as insects, larvae, spiders, slugs and worms, which they catch on their sticky tongues. Larger toads may also take slow worms, small grass snakes and harvest mice, which are swallowed alive. Toads generally hunt at night, and are most active in wet weather.

(groan) second really bad pun for the day but with all the politics here lately, being a pundit is easy. (THAT one wasn’t really bad, see? “Pun dit”? OK, it stunk up the place now that I read it aloud and didn’t even make myself crack a smile. So, sue me.) And don’t give me that stuff about messing with God’s song. I’m fairly sure a man named Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure wrote the words in 1847 and his buddy named Adolphe Charles Adams composed the music. While I’m sure God had a BIG hand in it, He’s also got a good sense of humour or I would have been flambeed by lightning a long time ago. He’s probably shaking His divine head and I’m gonna have some postmortem explaining to do but that “in His image” clause is gonna be my defense and Perry Mason is already up there. Back to the rock ~~ This is one of the interesting things in the garden at my apartment. If you know where to look, you can see it on Google Earth even tho it’s not all that big. I don’t know geology so I can’t name it nor explain why a rock would choose to imitate cheese. (Maybe it’s a Swiss rock. Hmmmm). But up close it looks rather interesting but I’d never sit on it. With this many places for a spider to call home, odds are good you’ll be covering the daylight on at least two or there who won’t be amused. Interesting rock in macro tho. :-)
