Please help capture puppy torturer by donating to our reward fund On March 6th, Cecil Kirk, a supporter of IDA’s Project Hope sanctuary for abused and neglected animals in Mississippi, arrived carrying a dog who he found on a road. He thought the little dog, who was in a deplorable state, had been attacked by coyotes or hit by a car. But after an examination, it was determined that there were no puncture wounds or injuries related to a car accident. Rather, this adorable little white and lemon terrier mix, approximately six months old, had been tortured and then discarded. Dr. Phil Bushby, a professor of humane ethics and animal welfare at Mississippi State University, happened to be at Project Hope that day, as part of IDA’s monthly spay and neuter program, and was finishing up surgery when this sad-looking dog was rushed in to see him. The dog had endured boiling water or possibly an odorless chemical substance poured atop her head, which then flowed around her ears, and spread over her back and legs, burning her all over. Project Hope’s Director, Doll Stanley, named her Phoenix because “she survived the hell of a burning.” Her side, shoulder, and back are of the gravest concern, as we see if she can heal without becoming infected. Dr. Bushby shaved her and removed as much of the dead skin as possible. The next two weeks will determine Phoenix’s fate. If she doesn’t succumb to her affliction, caused by monstrous cruelty, and enough skin heals, the remaining dead skin will be removed and her healthy, loose skin will be pulled together, and her appalling scars will be covered. Phoenix possesses the will to live, apparently having survived at least a week in her condition before being brought to IDA’s Project Hope. As if the burning wasn’t traumatizing enough, it appears that Phoenix was also severely kicked sometime prior to being burned, as her rear hip is weak but healed, leaving her walking like a crab. Project Hope is a sanctuary in an area under siege, a part of the country where staggering crimes are committed against animals. IDA is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the offender(s). In Mississippi, the maximum fine for animal cruelty is $1000, the minimum $100, or a jail sentence of up to six months. First offenders rarely get a maximum fine, and prisons are heaving with inmates. Sentencing is often left to the discretion of the judge. What You Can Do IDA’s Project Hope sanctuary desperately needs your help. Please help us raise the $2,000 we need to offer this reward, and to continue offering rewards to solve cruelty cases. If you can help us increase these rewards with a donation of $25 or more, we’ll be able to put IDA members’ combined voices together as we work together to minimize cruelty to animals, and punish it severely when it does occur.
