This is the Florida cottonmouth, a snake that I love and respect dearly. Cottonmouths have such bad reputations, and it makes me so sad because they are such fantastic creatures. There is a commonly held belief that they “chase people away from their nests” and “aggressively stand their ground.” These ideas are simply a total misinterpretation of their behavior. Snakes are not humans; you cannot interpret their actions in human terms, you must interpret their actions in snake terms. First of all, cottonmouths don’t ever nest. In fact the only snake in the world that nests is the king cobra. Second, when a cottonmouth or any snake moves toward you on the ground, it is not an aggressive move; rather, they are fleeing. See, snakes have poor eyesight and they get confused easily when scared. They look at you and see something big and mistake you for a tree or some other form of shelter under which they can hide. Thirdly, what we see as a cottonmouth “standing its ground” is really just the snake remaining motionless in the hopes that you won’t see it. If it flees, you are more likely to see it and eat it (at least that is what it thinks). This cottonmouth is giving me its characteristic open-mouthed defensive display. In the hundred or more cottonmouths with which I’ve interacted, this is the one and only time I have ever witnessed its defense display. And it only threatened me because I was being annoying, laying on the ground in front of it on my stomach with my camera in one hand and a stick in the other trying to move the brush away from it get a clear shot. As soon as I put the stick down, the defense display stopped and the snake turned and left. This shot was taken across the road from my house north of Gainesville, Florida. 100% of the profits from the sale of this image will be donated to Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.

A hummingbird is seldom still; I’ve been watching birds for a long time, but I’ve never seen a more energetic, feisty, restless species than the hummer. This particular ruby-throated hummingbird is fluttering its wings threateningly before buzzing into a high speed chase to ward off competitors from its food source. I’ve even witnessed these tiny mites chasing cardinals which are MUCH larger than they are, yet they are fearless!

We all have defense mechanisms in effect to keep us from getting hurt. Thats what the dragon represents. However you notice hes starting to tear the heart apart. Thats because defense mechanisms are double edged sword. Sometimes we hurt ourselves trying to protect ourselves.

The moment had come from the myst of the ages for the old God to arise from his slumber. Lightning burst from the obelisk, driving through his soul and into eternity. All nature stood in hushed amazement as they heard the roar of his voice. His first task would be to defeat the Tasan, that old reptile, the vile one known as Fos, The Emasculated Toad, who arose from the corrupted, odious, bloody, and barren wasteland which is Heroine’s Wed. The monstrous creature had wreaked havoc for the long while the old God had rested, and now it was time to bring an end to its unearthly terror. One moment at a time, the old One would return glory to the entire kingdom, and the peoples would again be filled with comfort and joy. This bluebird female reminds me of a prim little lady, sitting prettily on a branch with new spring leaves. The real story, though, is that she is in great trauma as a sparrow is threatening her nest. Just goes to show that we never know what’s under the surface of still waters.

Fort Nelson is part of the ‘ring of steel’ built to defend the City of Portsmouth from attack during and after the Napoleonic wars. Fort nelson is only part of the Massive defense network surrounding Portsmouth Harbour & also extending out into the ‘The Solent’. At the time of Building these were considered ‘State of the Art’. Consider this- these Forts were actually built to Defend against NAPOLEON. , from a land attack, so your actually looking at the BACK ?. / This Fort is actually on top of Portsdown Hill looking down onto the Harbour. / There are so many Kill Zones designed into this building, it makes you shiver when walking around the outside. They were never attacked, Because Horatio Nelson defeated the Enemy at the Battle of Trafalgar. Cutting off Supply & Transport capability, This made the Land Attack impossible. Not often spoken of these days, thats why Nelson is such a KEY figure in UK History. He may have been the only thing to stop that invasion, we could have been French if not for him. Due to the MASSIVE expense of these fortresses ( that were never attacked) they were then referred to as Lord Parmerston’s Folly’s. / Nothing could be further than the Truth, They are Real & were designed to Wipe out anything & anybody that got too close.

When watching the skies for intruders, the hummingbird sometimes stretches and appears to be standing tall—well, as tall as a three inch bird can stand! This ruby-throated hummer is looking mighty proud in its tippy toe stance.

LAS INDIGENISTAS: Digitization [2007]. I AM NOT ADVOCATING NOR AM I CONDONING SENSELESS VIOLENCE HERE. What I do advocate is armed struggle in self-defense. Like Ward Churchill has written in “On the Justice of Roosting Chickens: Some People Push Back,” in fact ALOT of people would push back in the form of political armed struggle. And I support Indigenist revolutionary armed struggle.

I watched a major battle today between a male Eastern bluebird and a dominant male sparrow. This beautiful young male was fighting gallantly for his turf, but I don’t know what the outcome will be. Sparrows have superior bills and don’t give up easily. It’s a shame they rival bluebirds for nesting boxes as they don’t have to have this kind of nest; they can pretty much survive anywhere. The bluebirds had already constructed the nest, but the female had not yet laid her eggs. That’s a good thing as I’ve seen sparrows enter a nest and destroy the eggs. Let’s hope for a good outcome!

Bluebirds have their own language which consists not only of songs and calls but also wing-waves. According to Donald and Lillian Stokes, authors of The Bluebird Book, “It is done . . . as a kind of greeting or attention-getter. The male does it at the nest entrance and on top of the box and sometimes when he has food for the female. Both birds do wing-wave as the other flies overhead or near. And wing-wave is often given when the two land near each other on a perch or at the nest box.” This male Eastern bluebird is doing the characteristic wing-wave as he lands near the nest box.

Cruelty Case in Mississippi - IDA Offers $2,000 Bounty

Please help capture puppy torturer by donating to our reward fund On March 6th, Cecil Kirk, a supporter of IDA’s Project Hope sanctuary for abused and neglected animals in Mississippi, arrived carrying a dog who he found on a road. He thought the little dog, who was in a deplorable state, had been attacked by coyotes or hit by a car. But after an examination, it was determined that there were no puncture wounds or injuries related to a car accident. Rather, this adorable little white and lemon terrier mix, approximately six months old, had been tortured and then discarded. Dr. Phil Bushby, a professor of humane ethics and animal welfare at Mississippi State University, happened to be at Project Hope that day, as part of IDA’s monthly spay and neuter program, and was finishing up surgery when this sad-looking dog was rushed in to see him. The dog had endured boiling water or possibly an odorless chemical substance poured atop her head, which then flowed around her ears, and spread over her back and legs, burning her all over. Project Hope’s Director, Doll Stanley, named her Phoenix because “she survived the hell of a burning.” Her side, shoulder, and back are of the gravest concern, as we see if she can heal without becoming infected. Dr. Bushby shaved her and removed as much of the dead skin as possible. The next two weeks will determine Phoenix’s fate. If she doesn’t succumb to her affliction, caused by monstrous cruelty, and enough skin heals, the remaining dead skin will be removed and her healthy, loose skin will be pulled together, and her appalling scars will be covered. Phoenix possesses the will to live, apparently having survived at least a week in her condition before being brought to IDA’s Project Hope. As if the burning wasn’t traumatizing enough, it appears that Phoenix was also severely kicked sometime prior to being burned, as her rear hip is weak but healed, leaving her walking like a crab. Project Hope is a sanctuary in an area under siege, a part of the country where staggering crimes are committed against animals. IDA is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the offender(s). In Mississippi, the maximum fine for animal cruelty is $1000, the minimum $100, or a jail sentence of up to six months. First offenders rarely get a maximum fine, and prisons are heaving with inmates. Sentencing is often left to the discretion of the judge. What You Can Do IDA’s Project Hope sanctuary desperately needs your help. Please help us raise the $2,000 we need to offer this reward, and to continue offering rewards to solve cruelty cases. If you can help us increase these rewards with a donation of $25 or more, we’ll be able to put IDA members’ combined voices together as we work together to minimize cruelty to animals, and punish it severely when it does occur.
