Tradition has it that when St Patrick pursued his mission to bring Christianity to Ireland, he used the shamrock to teach the natives about the Holy Trinity. Truth or fable, who knows. In any case, the number three has had a special significance for the Irish as for many other cultures. In 1906, Kuno Meyer collected and published a book of Irish wisdom sayings, many of them from ancient sources. The book is called The Triads of Ireland. These sayings are called triads, and are based around the number three. Their subject matter is wisdom, justice, social behaviour; in a society where important laws, rules, poetry and so on, were passed down orally, these little sayings were easy to remember, an aide memoire you could say.
