Stone Town is the capital of the island of Zanzibar and it was here in 1946 that Farookh Bulsara was born. A Parsi from India he lived here until the age of eight years old when he was sent to boarding school near Mumbai, India. There he learned to play the piano and his friends noted that he had a good ear for music. In 1964 at the time of the Zanzibar revolution the Bulsara family evacuated to England. Farookh became Freddie Mercury and the rest is history! / This bar/restaurant – Mercury’s Bar – is at the waterfront and opens straight onto the sea. It hosts a limited amount of Queen memorabilia and draws in numerous tourists. If travelling to Zanzibar it is certainly worth a visit if only for a beer or a coffee. / The birth place itself is up a little side street in the town and (as far as I am aware)is not open to the public. Farookh Bulsara sadly died of HIV/AIDS in 1991, but his music will undoubtedly live on for a very long time.
