By Darren Stones With the New Year upon us, have you considered where you are going to purchase your ‘08 calendars? Before you go shopping, spare a moment or two. The courier has just delivered a new-release RedBubble calendar courtesy of James Pierce. Calendar contains pics from onetonshadow. My first impression of the calendar is that it’s a premium product and has plenty of weight – not some cheap and nasty looking thing. It’s an A3 size – in plain speak that measures; 11.7in x 16.5in or 297mm x 420mm. The cover page consists of a white matte paper which has a chunky feel to it (300gsm for the tech minded). Quite simply, it looks and feels good. From a marketing viewpoint, I believe it needs the artist’s name included on the cover page. Something for the RedBubble team to consider. The monthly calendar pages are made of (175gsm) white matte paper which has a clean fresh look. The numerals on each monthly page are not overly large, although they are easy to read. Being grey, they are more subtle than obvious and don’t distract from the artwork. There’s plenty of room to scrawl birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and due dates for your favourite debts. The title of each image and artist’s name is printed underneath the image on each of the calendar month pages. The artist’s RedBubble URL is also printed in the bottom right corner of each monthly page. So, there’s good exposure for those seeking world domination regarding sales. The binding is the white plastic-coated type and it allows for easy turning of each page. It seems a good choice for the product as the pages hang flat. Remember, 2008 is a leap year so there’s a smidgeon of extra value contained. Humpback Whale Calendar 2008 – for sale Reviewer’s note: My qualification for reviewing calendars; I’ve been on the planet for nearly 15,000 days.

Firstly I was wondering why my Vintage Pink image was taking off suddenly today with more comments and favouritings – now I know!! It is featured on Redbubble’s Art page – along with amazing images by Jason Connelly, Paul Vanzella, Robert Mullner, Sharon Hammond and others whose bootlaces I feel unworthy to tie! I am thrilled. Secondly I had word today that Vintage Luna Park will be used by a card company in Sydney to create giveaway postcards in spinners at hundreds of venues – I don’t think it has sunk in yet – Sarah’s Butterfly Kisses was published by them a few weeks ago, and is already out there in the ‘marketplace’ so keep an eye out in tourist spots, cafes, theatres etc … you may see some familiar images!!! Woohoo !!!

  • Glass 5% full OR Don't give up the day job
    by Geoff Coleman - Landscapes

I know talk about money is really crass (hey we’re all in this for the art alone afterall hehe) but I thought you might find the following amusing and/or of some interest. First the good news – I’ve just realised that over the last 10 months I’ve made my first (he says optimistically) thousand dollars from photography – yay!! Now the bad news – I figure I’ve outlayed in excess of $20K on photography equipment and related expenses in the last 2 years – booo! So that means I’ve made back 5% of what I’ve outlayed – so glass 5% full! And if I can just STOP buying stuff then, at this rate I figure I’ll break even by about 2028 – yeehah! Unfortunately I don’t seem to be able to stop buying stuff – I got so excited about making my first grand that I’ve gone gear shopping again – sigh – $850 down the tube. So I guess that actually means the glass is really 0.75% full and that I’ll break even in 2158. Ah well if you can’t pass on debt to your kids what’s the point in having them I say! Anyway – what I thought you might be interested in is the breakdown of sources of income – it really surprised me: 1. Sales and commissions arising from hanging pictures in my office at work – $610 / 2. Sales from local gallery/giftshop – $240 / 3. Sales and licencing from RedBubble – $218 / 4. Sales from 4 group art gallery exhibitions – $132 In short – exhibiting at work accounted for about 60% of the income and in my local area (where most of my shots are taken) another 25%. In other words if people have some sort of connection to you or the place you take pictures of, plus they can physically see your work, you are more likely to sell it. The exception to the latter for me seemed to be Gallery exhibitions where, in each case, not only my pictures failed to sell but almost every other photographer also failed to sell. Given the cost of gallery exhibiting I’ve come to the conclusion it’s a dead loss for landscape photography. / I also have to say although sales from RB have been a relatively small proportion of tthe total – most of the total sales I got involved me showing my RB site to prospective purchasers and I’d have to say that not only being able to show my photos but also the range of formats people can get them in, actually helped secure most of the sales of the framed prints I sold. One more thing – most of the sales I’ve made have been of prints that I printed and framed myself. I’ve not found it to be more cost-effective to do it myself (the cost of DiY printing and framing and getting framed prints from RB is very similar, in fact really quite a lot cheaper from RB when you consider the labour – DiY framing is an absolute bugger I find). But what I’ve found is people really prefer a titled and signed print in the frame by the photographer over one that isn’t from RB. Maybe RB could create a new category of individually signed and titled mattes for prints at a higher price than unsigned to cover the cost of sending mattes to photographers for signing and then having them sent back – pretty cumbersome though. Love to hear about other people’s experiences if you would care to share. Cheers Geoff

JOURNAL Well, I have just finished publishing this dateless and timeless Journal. A personal healing journal that takes you on a journey through your uniqueness and personal cyclic patterns. O – Observing and noting your unique habits, in your daily routine / U – Uniting with thoughts which manifest an abundance, health, love & responsibility / R – Remembering that you deserve ALL the love, respect, joy & prosperity D – Defining your relationships with clear boundaries / A – Abounding and sharing the positive and healing knowledge you’ve acquired / I – I (SELF) am a unique individual becoming the best person I can be / L – LOVE and care for yourself and others by example / Y – You are responsible for your WILLPOWER B – Believing that the possibilities are endless, in achieving your Healing goals / R – Respect that NO one else can “fix” you – but you / E – Emote your feelings to yourself in a mirror or in your journal, as well as to others / A – Accept that there is a reason for everything, in your life’s journey / D – Divinity is present, become aware of non-logical insight and perceive intuitively This journal can be used on its own, or in conjunction with my previous ‘works’, “Sailing through the 7C’s”, “Beyond Symptoms”, and “Puzzled Isles of Spirit”, which would pursue more in-depth explanations of the workings of this journals’ purpose and function. Thanks so much for looking and taking the time to see what I have been up to…

Today I photographed the ANZAC Day march in Melbourne. I had a rollercoaster of feelings watching the ol’ diggers march down St Kilda Rd. I felt so proud to be an Australian, with a massive crowd there to cheer them on, and have so much respect and admiration for what the diggers did for us, least we forget them. Click here or on the image below to go to my blog for more photos, hope you enjoy them.

On June 6th, RedBubble is taking part in Drawing Day, a worldwide drawing event which encourages everyone to drop everything and draw for the sake of art and creativity. The Drawing Day website has linked to the RedBubble Drawing Day group and all works created on the day and uploaded to the group will be added to the final tally. / / The organisers have also given us the keys to the Drawing Day twitter account which means that we’re welcome to post about what we’re getting up to on the day and link to some of the drawings uploaded to the group. Our posts will go out to everyone who’s watching the twitter account and we’ll be posting alongside other sites who are taking part. / / Whether you’re an accomplished illustrator or a part time doodler, we’d love you to join us. If you’d like to take part in Drawing Day on the 6th of June, join the Drawing Day group and stay tuned for more info as we sharpen our pencils in anticipation. / / / : -

  • A Reason to Shout! 15% Off Framed and Canvas Prints. 7 Days Only.
    by selling

Shout This promotion is a great opportunity …

Shout This promotion is a great opportunity to market your art. It’s also a good opportunity to do a bit of ordering for the holidays – which will be here before we know it. Make It Better 15% off framed and canvas prints is a pretty good savings, but you have the power to make it an even better discount for shoppers. Here’s an example of the discount you can boast when you lower your margins temporarily for this promotion. For example, by lowering a mark-up from 30% to 15%, you can market your prints for 25% off. Come and Get It Here are a few ways to get the word out about this promotion: 1. Announce the sale in a journal article and suggest a few best-selling (or new) designs to shoppers. 2. Use your blog, social networking hangout, or other webpage to promote your sale. You can use the graphics that we provide below, or create your own. If you create a graphic (or template) and want to share it with other RedBubble members, simply link to it in the comments area below. 3. Create a unique sales event about: New Work – “See my newest artwork and get 25% off. Framed and canvas prints start at under $x!” Seasonal Sale – “Eliminate the last minute gifting worries at holiday time. Get unique framed and canvas prints on sale now.” If you have any holiday-themed artwork, you might want to link to a few from your profile page. Series Sale – Use your Profile page to suggest artworks that can be paired, e.g., “Buy this pair of Paris prints for under $x.” Limited Editions – Offer an artwork for the week of this sale only. Then put it in storage for 6 months. Limited Editions and sales promotions work well together. Newsletter Special – Send news of the sale to a hand-picked group of contacts. If you have a large contact list or are concerned about spam filters, services such as Campaign Monitor allow you to send emails for 1 cent per email. Plus, services like this one offer free email templates that do not require a knowledge of programming languages such as HTML. If you send an email, remember to: only use a list of people that agreed to receive your emails; note the promotion deadline; check your links. More email tips are here. Raffle – This idea is a bit more work, but you can post a contest/raffle on your Profile page. E.g., “Buy now and be entered to win an original artwork. Send me a quick note at the end of checkout (there’s a field for this on the final page of checkout) and I’ll enter you in quick and fun drawing to win my artwork named “x.” FYI, in the U.S., you need to allow a “no purchase necessary” option, e.g., allow people to email their entry without purchase. You can put this in small type using the ^ character on either side of your text. Dig It The price you and shoppers see has already been discounted by 15% on RedBubble pages and in the cart. Happy selling! The RedBubble Team p.s. If you have an interest in learning more sales techniques, check out the Sales Group and our free Selling tips and tricks. It’s September! Which is pretty exciting by itself, and we’ve taken that excitement one step further by celebrating the recent launch of our marvellous 2010 RedBubble Calendars with a quite brilliant offer. We’ve knocked 15% off all calendars, that’s 365 days for the price of 310. Where else can you find such value? Nowhere that’s where. And when you buy 10 or more, we’ll give you free shipping. But you only have one week to enjoy this offer, (ends 10am AEST, convert to your time.) so if you haven’t already chosen 12 images and selected what will be brightening your kitchen next April, then I’d suggest you get your skates on and make yourself a fancy new calendar. Of course if you’re really stretched for time, you can just buy somebody else’s. And over here, someone called ‘Jo’, has written all about how useful they are as gifts or even at making you some money, with which to buy more calendars I expect. And when they look this lovely, it’s just not surprising. / / / 2009 is so last year. I wasn’t sure if I should post this out today, for September has passed and I was without a computer at that time. I asked a friend …

I wasn’t sure if I should post this out today, for September has passed and I was without a computer at that time. I asked a friend for his opinion and he said that he thought I should post it now, for it won’t hurt so much now as it would have on September. My daughter had a school project after a year of what happened on that fateful day which involved teamwork. The group had six members in it and it was for an English class. Since English isn’t the official language here, the class was at awe at what to write, what to do, and how to present it. My daughter, always being a leader took matters into her own hands and did practically all of the work. All she asked of me, because she was so busy, to write something for her as a presentation and her thoughts about what happened and poems so she could hand out to some of them to read.  Well, this is what I wrote according to her views: My name is Blanca Ramos: Yes, so many lives were lost that day. So many dreams broken. So many families shattered. How many children lost their fathers and mothers? How many parents lost their children? Others lost brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. And we who didn’t lose someone close did lose our innocence, our trust, our hopes. Just to think that all of those innocent people died, so tragically, the firemen who didn’t have to go in, but did anyway, because that is what they did, that was their job; to save lives. The people who were working there, just earning a living, trying to bring food on the table. It could have been my mother. Did you know that she worked there on One World Trade Center on the 57th floor and worked for the Chilean Trading Corporation? She had left her job there to move to Puerto Rico. And what about those people who were so desperate and helpless that they felt that their only way out was to jump to their deaths? What went through their minds before they jumped? What went through their minds when they did jump? We were in a sense lucky because we were thousands of miles away. But what if you were there? What kind of feeling would you have felt then and there? Did you know that there was a school nearby and that I have a cousin who goes to that school? Do you know what she said was the first thing that went through her mind when she was told to leave the building and she saw people jumping out of the buildings? She said that she thought it wasn’t real. She thought she was watching a movie. Well, I started to imagine myself being a student there and being there at that time. And then in my mind I saw images. Images of my train ride to school that morning. Images of how the entrance to the train station was. all crumbled up. I walk around and all that I see is dust and concrete everywhere. Cars are crushed. Ambulances ripped apart. I sea a man’s shoe. Then I see the rescue workers. There are constructing makeshift cots to transfer the dead. They are made out of 4×4 plywood and 9” nails. But there is something strange! They are all empty! There are no bodies to be found to put on them. I do see a fireman who is sitting down with his head down, tired to the bone, but who will not give up in hope of finding someone, anybody alive. There are people with pictures in their hands in hope of finding someone who knows about their loved ones. Did they make it? Has someone seen them around? Could they be hurt in a hospital. Or does someone know what they really do not want to hear? That he or she was not able to make it out of the building; that he or she is dead. But their families need to know, even if it will kill them. Now, what are my feelings upon seeing all of this? Will I be able to handle this? Or will I become insane with sorrow? I myself feel a little confused. But one thing I do know is that I hurt, I am in pain, and not for myself, for thank God I have not lost a loved one; but for my fellow man, my brothers, my people. I feel like crying. I am in a kind of shock. But then, all of the sudden I get angry. And I want to hurt someone. Yes, hurt the ones who did this. I want justice for all of the victims. For us too, for we too in many ways are victims, for we were hurt in the heart. I want revenge! I want WAR! I am blinded with rage. But, is war the answer? Some say yes, others say no. But then I know that in the long run they will have to answer to our Creator in Judgement Day. And what about our future. Will there be any more terrorists attacks? Will we be able to fly again without feeling afraid? And what about those cowards from hell. Do they feel remorse? I think not. No, they just cheer, they celebrate. They burn our flag in rejoice and defiance. Then I keep walking. I finally get to my final destination; one that I wanted to go so bad and at the same time dreaded. Oh, but what a ghastly sight. At first it feels strange and eerie not to see those beautiful twin brothers. Those who greeted the world. So proud, standing so handsome, so tall. Then I get closer, I see a gaping hole, full of rubble. Oh, how it hurts, how it hurts! Ahh. One year has passed. They say time heals all wounds. But has it? I keep seeing those images, people crying, screaming, confused. But I keep on remembering seeing those firemen entering the building, going into their deaths and then that is when I am convinced that I WILL NEVER, EVER, FORGET.

Learn how to publish a great photographic magazine and how to sell it… Derek Powazek’s guide to compiling a printed magazine in a little over a day contains plenty of sage advice. For Strange Light he curated 54 photographs of last month’s dust storm in Sydney, and offers insight into the process of approaching photographers to seek permission to use their work. The resulting publication is for sale on MagCloud for just enough to cover printing costs… Really a great article and worth to read and learn how to publish and sell own magazines online… Read also: PROMOTE YOURSELF COOL…! or Use the impact of a new SHARE BUTTON to promote your work… or My wallart feature at the PUMA RUNNING website…

I’m getting a new cellphone with an 8 megapixel camera and video soon, I can’t wait, I want to start taking ‘spontaneous pictures’ of the things I see around me. Oh I know it’s not like having a really high-tech camera or anything, but it’s something I can carry around me when I go on my daily walks, there have been so many snippets of Life and emotion I’ve seen on my short, daily travels, that I’d have loved to capture on film. / / I started disciplining and committing myself to daily walks about three months ago, it was a way of motivating me, re-energising me, getting my ass out of a bed and back into the big, wide world again, being around people, life and nature but at a safe, ‘controllable’ distance. I think about lots of things on my walk. / / Plus it helps to shift some weight off my fat, Jack Russell dog. / / So rain or shine, I make my way out of the house at 5:30 pm NZ time every day for my two hour walk, whether I feel like it or not, it has become a part of my daily ritual and routine, probably the only thing I stick to with consistency at all. / / The walks initially started out about 2km around the block, then I walked an extra block further, and another yet again, feeling like Forest Gump getting further and further away from home. / / And sometimes I see things I’d love to capture on camera that I can no longer express in words, small things that to some might seem inconsequential, but that for me, momentarily, move me to think and feel again. / / Yesterday while out walking, a bright, tiny, yellow bird flew out of a tree into the road, it hit the windscreen of an oblivious driver who was talking on his cell phone and who just carried on driving to go about his day. / / I watched the bird fall to the road thinking how weird it was that it remained unscathed and in tact. / / It tumbled and rolled over and over a few times and then lay still, a small, bright, lifeless speck on a black, tarseil landscape. / / I questioned why something so harmless, young and beautiful was taken away from us so suddenly and quickly, it makes the meaning of life itself seem so pointless and futile… / / But then I wake up to see another sunny day, baby ducklings waddling across lawns, more beautiful coloured birds flying freely in the sky, and I figure that it’s just the universal cycle of things, that one, single day, flying free to that little bird, may have felt like a lifetime to another animal or person who forever feels imprisioned and sad… / / So I guess it’s all relative in the end? / / I swear I once said I’d shoot myself and blow my brains out if I ever started to write soppy, sentimental shit about birds, flowers or sunsets. / / That shit is sooooooooooooooooooo not like me. Now I feel like I have to create or write something hard, gritty and realistic to counteract the weak, soppy shit. / / I can’t wait to get my new cellphone camera… / / Green… / / I just live / way over here, / in a land where poets / get paid money / for writing about Tuis / that shit and sing / in Kowhai trees, / a country where writers / whore their souls, / writing glossy, / sugar-coated, / travel-brochure / fucking poetry, / designed to promote, / the remote… / / Ciao 4 Now / Jennifer B / / xox
