I had fallen asleep on the lounge late, the television had lulled me with its nonsensical banter… A mother of a 3 year old and a young baby learns to grab her sleep when she can. When I awoke at about 1am in the morning, I was certain that I had woken midway through some big budget Hollywood disaster movie. I was confused by the news headlines scrolling across the bottom of the screen but simply assumed it was all a part of the storyline. Perhaps the main characters were a group of Lois and Clark-esque reporters who were witnessing the coupe of their news careers unfolding before their very eyes… And then a familiar face popped up on the screen… Not some fictional character being played by Tom Hanks or Geena Davis, but my very own local bigwig on the news scene. As my brain synapses started madly firing, trying to make a connection that I was fighting with every atom in my being, I distinctly remember the very moment my heart stopped… This wasn’t a late night Hollywood blockbuster… this was real. And it was happening right now. My heart started beating again… double time and skipping about like a rabbit on speed. The first tower had already been hit, and I was playing catchup… desperately trying to make sense of what was happening when right before my eyes I saw the second plane slam into its target. My tears came then, and they just kept on coming. My cries awoke hubby and he came running to see what had upset me so… He joined me in my vigil, and I took comfort in his presence even though no words were spoken betwen us. Somewhere in the small hours of the morning my baby awoke and I fed him on autopilot, then held him until the sun rose. All the time watching this heartbreaking disaster unfold half a world away. I have tried to raise my children the best way I know how. I strive to be honest in my answers to their questions even if they are sometimes a little curly. I will not lie to them, but try explain things to them in an age appropriate way. I have tried to teach them that everyone deserves a fair go, no matter if their skin is a different colour to ours, or if they wear strange clothes, or if they speak a little differently to us. It is what is on the inside that counts, and how that person treats his fellow man. “Mummy, why are you crying?” asked my three year old when he woke up the morning after the world went mad. “I’m crying because I have just watched a lot of people die in another country, and it has made me really sad.” “Was there a war Mummy?” “No honey, there wasnt a war” “Then how did they all die?” How? How do you explain something as horrific as this? And I did have to explain it… somehow… I knew that no matter how much I sheltered him (and really… would sheltering him completely from the atrocities of the world do him any favours in the long run? I dont believe it would) the events of 9/11 were so earthshattering that I knew he could not escape it completely. I tried to answer his question… as simply as I could. “Baby, some men crashed some aeroplanes into some buildings and they killed a lot of people.” “Thats a bad accident hey Mum?” my baby said to me. “Honey, it wasn’t an accident. They did it on purpose.” Confusion in his big brown eyes as he asks me in a tiny voice “But… why?” “Because sometimes people do really bad things to other people darlin, for things that they believe in… Its not nice, and it hurts so many people, but it happens.” And as he crawled into my lap and I wrapped my arms around him, I felt his tears mingle with my own and I knew that with those words I had been forced to steal something from this child of my heart that he should have been able to keep for at least a few more years… His innocence. September 11 – A Living Memorial Overcome – lyrics by Live. even now the world is bleedin’ but feelin’ just fine all numb / in our castle where we’re always free to choose never free enough / to find i wish somethin’ would break cuz we’re runnin’ out of time and i am overcome i am overcome holy water in my lungs i am overcome these women in the street pullin’ out their hair my master’s / in the yard givin’ light to the unaware this plastic little place / is just a step amongst the stairs and i am overcome i am overcome baby holy water in my lungs i am overcome so drive me out out to that open field turn the ignition off / and spin around your help is here but i’m parked in this open space / blockin’ the gates of love i am overcome i am overcome holy water in my lungs i am overcomed beautiful drowning this beautiful drowning this holy water / this holy water is in my lungs and i am overcome i am overcome i am overcome i am overcome

Began with the sale I was notifed about at 12:30am :P Then went to bed. On my to work I got off at St. Andrews station, walked through the underground path which passes the Roy Thompson concert hall courtyard. The courtyard has this pool, and today look what I found there: This pool is very shallow; about 15cm deep perhaps. A few times this year I’ve seen ducks swimming in this pool, which was unusal enough, but baby duckings?! I wonder how they can get home, they would have to walk quite a distance away and cross some roads in order to reach the closest “natural” body of water! Luckily I had the camera on me; though I got it out pretty late; earlier they were more bunched up together. I arrive at work, got onto RB and replied to some comments. I check the status of my entry in the New Challenge. Initially, right after they starting taking votes, my work was ranked in the 50s, and in a few hours rose to the 20s. However the day after it dropped to the 130s! (I almost died…). It remained around there for a few days, but today it suddenly improved and now it is in the 60s. I’d feel safer if the challenge just closed now so I could keep it there; big drops can happen in a few hours :P Finally a new feature! Love Birds which I just uploaded last night, got featured in the Stillness Speaks group! I didn’t foresee that the moderator was going for a bird theme today; looks like I uploaded the right thing at the right time!

Sadly it is the end of holidays for me. Today is my last day off after around 3.5 weeks or so of leave (I really shouldn’t complain, huh?!). I decided to spend part of it by taking some shots of the massive king tide that has hit the east coast of Australia. I thought of some possible venues and decided that some shots of a Sydney icon might be a good idea – Bondi Beach and the Bondi Icebergs Surf Life Saving Club. To make things a little more fun and interesting I also had a couple of new toys – a new polarising filter and a neutral density filter! Anyway – I thought I’d share a small selection of the shots I took, starting with: Bondi Beach – looking splendid for a surf or swim! — Here is a shot after playing around with a neutral density filter. Not sure if I like it that much… Time to move on to the Icebergs pool. If you are scared of sharks (after very recent and *very biased media stories) then these pools are what you need. — Mind you, with a king tide you could almost be forgiven for thinking that a shark may get washed up into the nearest salt water pool! — Especially with waves like this…. — This…. — And finally, this….. — If that scares you then perhaps you could imagine the pool under more smoother conditions, as portrayed with the trickery of a neutral density filter! For example…. —* And the final photo for this journal…. If you have made it this far I’m very impressed!! You deserve to sit back with a beer and enjoy a well earned rest by the pool! Hope you enjoyed the shots. Nothing special but I had a lot of fun taking them! Cheers Big Ears’ and hope to keep up the photo expeditions even if I am working flat out with a regular job!!

Thanks to the Equine Art and Photography group for featuring Rainy Days and Mondays / I’m so honored to be included in that great line up! Also, I put together another little movie with Crimson Sky by Nori Bucci and my photos of Mouse. This one is short and sweet, just 1:59, because I wanted to add it to my facebook page and they only allow under 2 min. videos. Anyway, I think you will enjoy it and I know you will enjoy Nori’s beautiful song. Nori’s art work on redbubble is incredible, too. I have a rb print of Fire which is so gorgeous. / And you can find out more info on her music on her website, itunes and youtube. I guess you can tell that I’m a huge fan of Nori, the artist, the musician and the person. She is terrific.

A great BIG Thanks to everyone who responded yesterday to my request for thoughts and prayers. !http://images-0.redbubble.net/img/a…
A great BIG Thanks to everyone who responded yesterday to my request for thoughts and prayers. As I was undergoing treatment for skin cancer, I just felt such a peace. There was no pain, apart from the little injections. I was awake during the proceedure and without going into the gory details, they cut some tissue away, and kept cutting until after testing each time, there was no more cancerous tissue. Called Moes Surgery. I was surprised at the size of the hole above my right eye. But they stitched it and said I’d have a scar. Another one:-) LOL. Doesn’t feel too painful this morning though. Afterwards, I felt such a phoney, because there were other people at St Thomas’ for treatments that looked far more painful and extensive. One young boy, could only have been 10 or 11, had it on the side of his face and down his neck. Poor little thing, but he was sooooo brave, and his dad was very attentive. Chatting with people between cuttings, they were all quite positive and looking forward to recovery. We’re such an optimistic people. It was smiles all round when they came out and revealed that I’d reached the end and they could now stitch me up. Praise the Lord, and the wonderful and amazing nursing staff and doctors at St Thomases Hospital London. There was a girl there taking photographs of every stage of the treatment, I don’t think I’d really like that branch of photography, but she’d been to University in Edinburgh, close to where I used to live. Amazing. I feel good today, two black eyes, a few stitches and the wonderful sunshine. I’ll try and encourage people to enjoy life whilst they can, be good, praise the Lord, love others, talk to family and friends, and and and….. LOL. LOL LOL. As much as they can. It’s sooooo good for us. LOL. Thanks again for all your kind comments, and especially to those kind folks who actually put a smile on my face by purchasing some of my little works. You are very special people, and may the Lord richly bless you in every way. Success in life is living the way God intended you, enjoying His Creation to the full, and using the gifts He has given you to enrich the lives of others. Have a blessed, creative and fulfilled life my friends. So thankful! / Don.
