Photograph taken on top of the Dome, Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada. / Summer solstice 2006, MIDNIGHT (June 22nd). / The sun that goes through the Inukshuk adds to the F-stop effect. Photography is a great way to capture what we want to remember. / Great souvenir for those of you who have traveled north to the Yukon and that have witnessed Solstice there as well. / A picture is worth a thousand words. / This one a thousand beautiful souvenirs.

Challenge Winner – Birds in Flight, #12 Great Features Group There aren’t many things that bring me more joy than the companionship of the Black-Capped Chickadees that inhabit the woods behind our home. They visit us daily, and follow me along the trail whenever I go for a walk. I could be 3 property lines over and they will still follow me! It is not unusual for them to land on the end of my camera lens as I’m trying to frame a photo, or flutter around my legs, looking for their sunflower seeds. These little songbirds bring me more joy than I can ever truly express. What a gift they are! I would be filled with great sadness if they ever disappeared. They are a huge part of my passion for nature & wildlife photography and for capturing the beauty that surrounds us everywhere. This image was created by merging 2 of my chickadee in flight photos and then blending the sky together. When I visit my Mom in Pembroke we love to visit Pansy Patch Park. It is surrounded by a forest and is such a beautiful and inspirational place, especially in the fall when all the leaves are changing colors. The original image has been modified into a work of art – bringing out, I hope, what my spirit sees, not necessarily everything the lens does. I’ve entered the word of layering images and it is SO MUCH FUN! After my first week of practice this is the first creation I felt was worthy of upload to RB. This work of art includes the combination of 2 images – a monarch butterfly, and a black-eyed susan. I enhanced the colors in 3 sections of the monarch’s wing to tie the colors in the composition together and purposely made the butterfly smaller than life. I have entered an entirely new world here and am excited at the possibilities that lie ahead as I search through my extensive collection of images for future works :o) / / Original floral image. / / FLORAL GALLERY / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST
I was out on my deck tonight playing with the chickadees (again) when this beautiful blue jay landed on my deck railing no more than 4-5 feet away from me. They are normally quite timid but this one seems to be getting accustomed to my presence. This is the first time I was lucky enough to get a half decent shot and this was the ONLY chance I had on this night! Photo taken in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada Canon Rebel XTi | Manual Mode, f/4.0 @ 97mm / Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS Photoshop Edits: removed a few background distractions (thankfully there weren’t many). I also changed the deck rail color tone to blue and faded it out at opposite ends to soften it. / / / Bird Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST
Featured in Digital Art Compilations November 17, 2008 – thank you! I wanted to portray, as best I could, who I really am. I’m simply a country girl with an incredible passion for nature and wildlife. When outside my eyes and ears are always open – wondering what new adventures and beauty this day will bring. This is my field of dreams – my happy place. That place one goes each night when they close their eyes and wander off into peaceful slumber. Although this image is a merge of 3, actually having the chickadees that close to me is not at all far fetched! A relationship I value and reap great joy from. Portrait credit goes to my Mother-Lynda McDonald for taking the original portrait with my Canon for me. I then layered in 2 separate chickadee images to complete this piece. / Bird Gallery / Portraits – Digital Photo paintings / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST
Featured in Rural around the Globe – Jan. 31, 2009 With a gentle nudge from my dear mother, and some awesome girlfriends I decided to load my first attempt with an HDR image. The original image of this old building and pioneer wagon was taken at the Ameliasburgh Historical Museum in Amelisasburgh, Ontario. The Ameliasburgh Historical Museum has grown from one building, in 1968, to a full pioneer village. Featured in Ladybugs May 23, 2009 and in Urban Wildlife July 11, 2009 Featured on RB’s Homepage August 15, 2009 / All summer I searched for ladybugs in our gardens. I did find a few but not near AS MANY as in my own home over the winter months. I lost count of how many I gathered up from nooks and crannies and placed in a little aquarium in one contained apartment. I do NOT like to kill bugs and putting them outside in the snow was not an option. My next dilemma…what to feed them? Apparently they like Cheerios! For those just itching to know, they also like raisins and sliced green grapes :) Little droplets of water each day and they made out just fine. Now that Spring has arrived the surviving ladies have all been put back outside :) Canon Rebel EOS XTi with Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. Manual Mode, SS 1/80, f/5.6, ISO 200. Up until this Spring I had only seen a clearwing hummingbird moth once. Much to my delight this season, however, I am spotting 2 variations on a regular basis on my property. The other one has yellow bumble bee stripes on its back and was scooting around these flowers at the same time this one was. Being a perfectionist It is still my goal to get an awesome side profile shot. I have a few profile shots but am not sure I have the ‘one’ yet :) It has proven quite a challenge to photograph these little guys as their wings beat just as fast as a hummingbird and they do NOT land and stay still. Featured in the Woman Photographer August 6, 2009 Female Northern Cardinal image taken on my property, in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada on August 5, 2009. SS 1/125, f/5.6, EC -1/3, ISO 400 (How it turned out with this shutter speed, through a window, AND hand held is beyond me!...lol) Tonal adjustments completed in Digital Photo Professional & PShop. Northern Cardinal info. courtesy of Wikipedia. The Northern Cardinal is a mid-sized songbird with a body length of 20-23 centimeters long and a wingspan of 25–31 centimeters. It weighs about 45 grams. The male is slightly larger than the female. The male is a brilliant crimson red with a black face mask over the eyes, extending to the upper chest. The color is dullest on the back and wings. The female is fawn, with mostly grayish-brown tones and a reddish tint on the wings, the crest, and the tail feathers. The face mask of the female is gray to black and is less defined than that of the male. Both sexes possess prominent raised crests and bright coral-colored beaks. Mated pairs sometimes sing together before nesting. During courtship they may also participate in a bonding behavior where the male collects food and brings it to the female, feeding her beak-to-beak. If the mating is successful, this mate-feeding may continue throughout the period of incubation. The oldest wild Cardinal banded by researchers lived at least 15 years and 9 months. Featured in As Is Photography September 20, 2009. This is an AS IS photograph of a female monarch butterfly along side the chrysalis she just emerged from. Photo taken with a Canon EOS Rebel XTi and 100mm f/2.8 macro lens on my property in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. The Monarch is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae), in the family Nymphalidae. It is perhaps the best known of all North American butterflies. Female Monarchs (as shown here) have darker veins on their wings, and the males have a spot called the “androconium” in the center of each hind wing from which pheromones are released. Males are also slightly larger. The larvae and the butterflies retain poisonous glycosides from their larval host plant, the milkweed, so they become distasteful to potential predators. The monarch butterfly eats only milkweed as larvae. This highly effective defense strategy shields them against almost all predators that soon learn to avoid these species after attempting to eat them.
