  • Walking out at dawn in the tiny port of Orhaniye in Turkey I passed rows of wonderful moored gulets and fishing boats before coming the final berth at the end … so sad to see this once fine boat at rest … which never made it in time to the boatyard just a mile further on….. See also new day / taken shortly afterwards in the tranquil dawning light just along the quayside… / And for a glimpse of the breakfast bustle I returned to after this tranquil start to the day see unimpressed Taken with a compact nikon coolpix 4800

  • Yanakie Beach is just outside Wilsons Promontory National Park and is one of the few easy to get to sunrise locations at or near the Prom. I took this shot in August 2007 just as the sun peaked over Shag Rocks, named after the birds that are often seen drying their feathers there. Fortunately the tide was all the way in covering the extensive mud flats. A beautiful spot on a beautiful morning. For more shots from this area check out my Wilsons Promontory gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

  • Dawn Light: St Michael’s Mount from Penzance Cornwall UK. / Waiting for the Light / It was dark when I left home, I didn’t know what the weather was going to be like, but I was determined to be in Penzance for the Sunrise. I didn’t even know where the sun would come up at this time of the year. So after driving the 18miles from Redruth to Penzance I arrived in the darkness and walked to the foreshore with my Tripod, camera, camera-bag, filled with filters etc… I waited in the cold then in the distance I could see the beginnings of the dawn, the seagulls were sqwaking and doing the light dance in the sky. Then I also saw what I had come for, the dark outline of St Michael’s Mount. I waited patiently, shivering in the coldness of the March morning, and slowly but surely the sun began to appear, right behind St Michael’s Mount, and I was there to witness it for the first time in my life. Awesome. If I’d planned it, it couldn’t have been better. I’m not an expert at sunrises or sunsets, but I was focused on getting a good few pictures of this great moment. I tried different camera settings, filtres and ISO settings. I’ve got a few lovely shots, and now know what works with this lense and this camera for sunrises. Well worth sacrificing the pillow and the comfort of my duvet and loving wife. Afterwards, I was cold to the core, but so satisfied. Even if I’d not got any good pics, it was so exhilarating. Try to capture a sunrise, you’ll love it. Camera: Nikon D700, Lense 24-120mm 30sec at f/36 /

  • I set the alarm for 3am and headed out to the coast to catch a sunrise. / / This is the lighthouse at CapeSpear, Newfoundland. It is the most easterly point in North America. So while everyone else was sleeping I was the very first person in North America to see this sunrise… how cool is that! / / The rock that makes the cliffs that the lighthouse sits on reminded me of a martian landscape… / / Settings & Gear Used / / Manual Exposure / Shutter Speed: 10 seconds / Apeture: 16 / ISO: 100 / Focal Length: 22mm / / Canon 400D / Canon 10-22 lens / Manfrotto 055XProB Tripod / Manfrotto 222 Joystick / Cable Release / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / / /

  • Ok getting this shot was difficult. This Rufous Hummer was so fast that I would get the hummer in great, but no Lily, then I would get the lily but the hummer was already gone. So I took the best of each and using apply image in photoshop and blending modes, I put them together. All of this was taken through my kitchen window and yes I already had my coffee and I still wasn’t quick enough! Thanks for viewing and commenting! Image taken in Shady Cove, Oregon

  • One of those places on this Earth that I yearn to re-visit. can you blame me ? It is like being on another planet, all those weird shaped rocks, Buttes, Mesas, the gritty dryness, the intense heat of the the mid -day sun, the way the light changes…...I fell in love with this place ! / I got up early for this one, not that I could sleep anyway knowing this place was outside of the motel where we stayed ! / This is the land of the Navajo, and I sat inside a Hogan, where I watched and talked to a man making some jewellery. Very fine work. We solved the problems of the modern world in a very short time ! / This DOES need to be viewed larger to appreciate the details ! I scanned this from a Fuji Velvia transparency, on a Nikon Coolscan V ED, edited it in PS CS3, cleaning up with the spot healing brush, and a little noise reduction. I also employed just a tad ‘Orton’, which I felt enhanced the ‘grittiness’ of the amazing desert. / Shot on my secondhand Ricoh KR10 super. f11, with polarising filter. I cannot remember the lens ! • I sometimes wonder what it is about sunshine that pleases us, that prompts us to equate sunny days with love and hope and happiness. Sunshine isn’t all-benevolent…it has its downside. But there’s something about that twinkle of sunlight on dew, that glow of sunbeams on the horizon, and that hush of pastel dawn that brings joy. / Maybe it’s the renewal of light and the affirmation of life? I don’t know. But today’s cloudy so I worked on this image and finished it, and now I’m full of happiness. I hope you are, too. / / Three digital paintings and a photoimage (for texture), combined and edited in Corel Painter Essentials 2 and Photoshop Elements 3. /

  • The sun peeks above the Kenai mountains at 10:08 this morning. Tripod-mounted camera faces east across Cook Inlet (that Cook guy traveled, didn’t he?)—a mile or so toward Turnagain Arm. Grateful to see a sunny day, no matter how short. Standing for more than an hour in the snow at 10’F / -12’C felt fine at the time, but noticed a bit of numbness later. My spouse was facing west and using his tripod and 500mm lens to shoot the blue moon and partial lunar eclipse (when the moon is partially darkened by the earth’s shadow). The blue moon occurs when a second full moon occurs in a month. The blue moon for New Year’s Eve next occurs in 2028. Where will we be? Nikon D200 and Nikkor 70-300mm VR, 70mm, at f/22 and 1/10 sec, -0.3ev, IS0 100. Converted from 12-bit RAW to jpeg using Capture NX 2.2, manual exposure, spot metering, Manfrotto tripod, ball head. Remote shutter. Cokin graduated ND. / (Tripod kept sinking into the snow. Lost one lens cap in the snow and one handwarmer. A good morning!)
